INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

@chick rookie Apple cider vinegar is pretty widely available at most grocery stores. We picked ours up at either Meijer or Marsh, right next to the regular white vinegar. They typically carry fewer brands/sizes, but should have something.

Here's a couple of links to different waterers that you fill from the top. We have tried both and bought them from TSC. The first is a 2 gallon galvanized metal waterer that would be best used in winter under a heater, not in summer when they will hold extra heat. They come in 2, 5, and 8 gallon sizes that have the same size base. http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/harris-farms-double-wall-drinker-2-gal-capacity We like these, though may need a higher capacity one for our main coop.

We also tried one of these. The base melted (which is why we don't put plastic waterers on tin can heaters any more), but it was easy to fill from the top. We kept the 3 gallon jug after the base melted for carrying water in winter and have the hoses put up. Here's that link: http://www.tractorsupply.com/en/store/millside-3-gal-plastic-poultry-fountain

Neither had awesome rating, but I'd give each 4 stars personally, as long as you use them correctly (appropriate to the season/weather).

I've found around here Wally is the ONLY store that sells ACV with "the mother". Not just any ACV will do it has to say on the label "unpatutized with the mother" in order for it to contain the pre and pro biotics that help the birds.
Also (hoping to spare others the same issues) don't ever put ACV (with or without the mother) in your metal waterers. It corrodes the can and causes horrible rusty yukky water!
I did it last winter ( my first time trying ACV) ruined three waterers!

Hi all! Just wanted to say I had a really rough day at work today, and I took a break to check out BYC to de-stress in the afternoon, and then caught up with the thread just now, and it really helped. I don't even own chickens yet and they (and you guys) are helping me find my Zen. So thanks.

And @Mother2Hens, I did notice your suggestion that a mixed group of chicks be sent to us to kick us into gear. Don't worry, we'll get there on our own, just a little slower than I'd prefer. But thanks for making me smile.

Holy cow!!! It's 3am and I'm STILL awake. Three more hours will b 24. Grrrrrr why can't I rest? Oh well gonna go put in ANOTHER movie...Jeesh.

Tomorrow we finally get to start keeping our eggs again after de worming all the chickens!!
Our new 20 day old bottle calf went through a sick spell this last week. We got him all better and he is feeling and looking much better! And he also has figured out (kinda lol) how to moo!!
We just went through that as well. I hate store eggs!!! So glad to get my fresh eggs again.
Glad your calf is feeling better, I have a sick goat right now, vet gave me 3 different shots for her and have to start her on Red Cell tomorrow, her is going to hate me by the time this is over... lol
I think their first moo's are funny sounding too.. lol

I might have to look into making smaller coops for the boys.... will they need to be seperated from each other?? Will they fight?

I don't plan to order from hatcheries anymore, I originally did it to start my homestead - but now that I been looking around, I want to try and get different kind of chicks... I already have my wish list:

If anyone has any of these for sale, please keep me in mind :)
You have expensive taste.. lol

I like the timer idea! I ordered my gallon of ACV from amazon. I'm a prime member so shipping is free.
the first year I would go out and shut it off, last year someone on here was talking about timers and I had to try.. I love it. I am a APM too will have to look into that.

I always have buff Brahmas on hand and I don't see them on your list but Im breeding Blue Black and splash Orpingtons this year. when your ready just let me know,

very nice looking birds, I can NOT add to my next years list, I can NOT add to my next years list.......

That would be awesome!!!

Shadow

Rocky
I would say Shadow is your roo, but I'm no expert.

Walmart stores stock the Heinz brand of ACV if they aren't out of it. If they are bring it to th attention of the Grocery mgr if he knows is something that you use and will sell he's more likely to order it.
maybe that's what the problem is... I get there after they sell the last of it.. will have to talk to mgr about that.

I can find the ACV but not the good stuff. Thanks for the links, I have seen those, don't know why I didn't realize what they were ( thought they were feeders ) guess that's what I get for glancing at stuff so I can hurry and get out. I hate going to stores, don't care what kind, I just don't want to go so I get in and get out. DH says I'm not a normal woman... I say thank you. lol

Thanks for posting that I was fixing to get a metal water this weekend. guess I have to rethink that now.

:yuckyuck

Thanks everyone for your gender guesses :). I would be super happy if Rocky is a pullet, this one is my favorite chick out of this batch. I have 11 chicks the same age as these 2 and already have 6 for sure cockerels.. The Marans were so easy to tell, the cockerels have some huge red combs and waddles.

Got another question for you guys and gals.
If you remember I had a hen with 2 messed up legs ( I think they were broke ) anyway she is walking again after 2 mths, but her comb and waddles are still lt pink. She has been wormed, she eats like a horse but weighs nothing, but her poo is normal and she is active. Any Ideals?

My GUESS since she's acting normally would be her body is still just trying to recover.
