INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

there are other illness that can be passed to your birds too. But most of these can be passed by all kinds of means even a visit to the feed store can bring back the virus.
All kinds of bio security measures are discussed in most of the indiana poultry literature and the purdue sites. I would look into those before deciding to even ask if you want to see her flock. Honestly I don't let just any stranger come see my flock now days. The person coming might bring my birds some sickness. It does not mean that I don't have great birds in a great set up. It is just a method I use to limit exposure or risk. Some bio measures are a bit extreme while others are common sense.

I was afraid something might be able to passed through the eggshell, I'm going to call the lady and cancel. I don't want to bring anything into my flock. If she lets me see her flock would I be able to tell if they have MG?

There is only a 10% chance that MG will get passed thru a hatching egg if the flock has MG. So odds aren't too high . However there is a way to heat treat the eggs to kill MG if you are worried about it when hatching. You always run the risk of MG. It is carried by wild birds and any flock could have it

This. I've also heard of doing a Tylan soak with the eggs and having great success.

Honestly, no matter where you get hatching eggs or birds, you are running the risk of bringing this in. Yes, knowing how the person takes care of their birds will help, because someone dedicated to keeping a clean, healthy flock is usually more reliable as far as what diseases their flock my have. Many people don't realize, though, that chickens do not get colds, they get respiratory diseases, so you really never know. The best chances are with NPIP certified flocks, though even that is not a guarantee because disease can come into a flock after the test has been performed. There are risks no matter how you choose to add birds to your flock, and whether they are worth it is up to you.

I don't remember if you were getting eggs for a broody or just for an incubator (or if you said?), but either way, you could always perform a quarantine with the chicks that hatch and their momma, just to be safe. I think that's going to be your best bet if you're worried.

Getting the eggs for my broody austrolop, I have full sized hens and bantam Roos so not sure if my hens eggs are fertile. I have been researching MG and from what all I have gathered is wild birds can pass it on to our hens and pretty much except keeping them covered and penned their is not a lot we can do to protect them from MG. I'm reading this old thread now https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/113931/chicken-got-a-cold-added-info-ms-mg-ilt-crd-npip/50
I have also found that the NPIP test does not test for MG at least this seemed to be true when the above thread was posted.

Well I was offered the new job today. While I still havent accepted it im pretty confident I will! Im excited about the change.

That being said, I may have more flocks to sell. Gonna have less time at home so may need to sell more projects. If anything it will be a few more free ranging birds and silkies. But ill be sure to post here first.
Congratulations on the new job! Too bad about needing to reduce your flock, but at least there are some great people here who could help with that (I bet they are drooling...)

Well, it looks like our central AC is shot. If we can't repair it and have to replace it we'll have to delay getting chickens, as it will eat up the money we were saving for the coop, run and other stuff we need. Very depressed....

I don't HAVE to downsize, it would probably just be easier on me. That said, I'm still going to have 10+ breeding pens after downsizing lol. I don't think I would be getting rid of more than 12 birds total, but we will see. Might not do anything!

Ohh no! Hoping for the best!

If anyone is needing patio furniture, there are several sets that are 75% off at Lowes right now. I believe they have them listed on the website. On the lowes.com homepage, scroll to the bottom and it says something about outdoor furniture 25-75% off. Then put in your zipcode and see what's available in your stores.
