INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well, looks like we are gonna get our first cold blast! Is everyone ready for it? DH wants to shut off my hydrant by the coops. UGH... not looking forward to carrying water. I have to replace garden hoses anyways so I guess its time. Going to invest in a water tank for my piglets, and a lower watt tank heater.
My goats have heated buckets already. still working on the idea of the stock tank heater in the drum for the chickens. We have around 80 adult birds, including the guinea that still reside in the chicken coop, and my scovies. Will still provide a few buckets for the muscovy so they can dunk. Just have to come up with a way to keep them off of it so the water isn't getting pooped in! Here is my newest idea, I have a "safe" drum that held cooking oil. Leaving the top on, and just cut access holes for drinking. The drum has a port on the top, thinking I can invert it, and use that for draining to clean it out. if I cut the drum in half I could probably make 2 of them, and use plywood to cover the top.
Kind of like this, forgive my lousy drawing skills:

is the mille flure ?  I love those birds. so beautiful

Mille fleur isn't a breed isn't a breed, it is a color. You are probably talking about a d'uccle. Which is a true bantam breed.

these are seramas. smaller then bantam. a breed all their own but to answer your question, yes, you can get just about any breed today in bantam size. the fact is though there are very few "true " bantam breeds . I dont know what they are , maybe some one can enlighten us.

A true bantam breed is pretty much any breed of bantam that doesn't also come in an LF version. So some breeds that are true bantams are D'uccles, Danvers, sermas, Japanese, etc

yes, that is what i was talking about, I just didnt know how to spell it LOL

Quote: If it is hatchery stock, then yes there is a good chance they will molt the tail every time they molt. But they will grow back long like that each time. I have some silver duckwing phoenix. The males have long tails like that, but I'm not sure what will happen as they haven't molted yet. The problem with those long tails is that if they free range or don't have lots of roosts in their runs, the tails drag on the ground and get all tattered.

Okay, I've formulated my short and long term plans for fermented feed. I just have to wash out a bucket and pull the trigger.

I could sure use some more airtight buckets for storing dry feed.

Now I just have to decide which method of keeping water warm I want to use. I'm torn between the heated dog water bowl and the light bulb in the cinder block. Decisions, decisions.

I got beagled yesterday. A handsome fellow showed up at my fenceline and then ran the perimeter trying to find a way in. I met him at my front door. After a bath, a microchip scan (there is none) and posting on Indianapolis-Lost Pet Alert I have yet to have any hits on him. He doesn't seem super well cared for, he had an ancient harness on that had rubbed him on his belly, no tags or identifiers and is not neutered.

This boy is getting fixed tomorrow and then I will be shopping for a new home for him! VERY sweet and friendly to people and dogs! Please put the word out for him! He deserves a home that will take care of him!

ETA the vet thought he was around five years old.

One of my blue Ameraucanas layed her first egg today. And of all places at the ohio nationals!
Wow, that's a way to start! I guess she wanted an audience to debut her egg laying.
Okay. Finally the kennel pens in the barn photos. I've been really unmotivated to do anything lately. Thankfully my husband was ready to work and had some ideas of his own or I'd still be sitting around wondering if this was going to get done. Really glad he took the initiative because I'm hoping to move everyone in tomorrow before the snow starts next week. Kennel panels in the barn. This side is 16' long using two 6 ft panels and one 4 ft. gate; the opposite side has a 10 and a 6 ft. panel; the 6 ft has a gate opening toward the outside sliding door. This is what things looked like this morning. The whole thing has three 12 x 6 panels over the top. The sides are 12 ft. long. (Overall 12 x 16 perimeter). Decided to try having two roosts parallel to each other. I've seen others use that successfully but we'll see. Just an experiment and the second one toward the front can just be lifted right up and removed if we don't like it. He put that in a couple corners under some plywood that will be a warmer place to stand or lay. I'll probably put the feed and water in this corner. The styrofoam will be unreachable for the birds since they LOVE eating styrofoam... This piece of some kind of vinyl type flooring was at habitat for humanity restore for $8 so he got it when he saw it. Again...a little easier on the feet in the cold. View looking across from the rooster corner.
:drool I really like this setup!! Thanks for the pictures! :D If you don't mind me asking, about how much did those kennel panels cost you? (And sorry if you answered that already. )
I don't feel like going back to see who posted it, but I can't wait until those gong Tao chickens are in the US!
Haha, I knew you'd be excited! :D
