INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Ya me too. I ended up with 6/41 shipped eggs hatching Christmas eve & Christmas day. I won't be purchasing any shipped eggs any time soon or if ever again.

I would let a few bad experiences sway you one way or another. It is a big gamble, but sometimes very much worth it. I would always go with chicks first, but there are some breeders I would definitely buy some eggs from if I had the chance.

I agree. I've had some very good hatches from shipped eggs as well as some very poor ones. While I prefer to get started birds, I'll try shipped eggs if it's a breed I've had trouble finding and know that the breeder has good birds. I won't pay a lot for them, though.

I was going to suggest taking a cotton ball soaked in hydrogen peroxide and wipe on bloodied feathers.

I'm definitely going to shy away from shipped eggs. I'll spend a little more for chicks or started birds. That being said, I just put a dozen frizzled buff barred bantam cochin eggs in the incubator that I had shipped.

That was me last January! What incubator are you considering? This year is a mechanical plucker for me

and coop building supplies! I am upgrading my door and adding a few items to the sportsman cabinet, like the full view clear door.
Once you have a sportsman or another reliable, dependable incubator, you are totally in danger of severe chicken math

My first big mistake was pekin duck eggs. My first year to hatch I used 3 styrofoam LGs.
Sooooo I set 60 pekin eggs over 2 weeks to test out the new cabinet last February. Thought maybe 30 ducklings

All 60 HATCHED

Almost every Muscovy egg hatched without a hitch and Goose eggs too. I was buried in waterfowl by June. This year, we will be setting on Tuesday or Wednesdays again, its worked well and left the weekend open. Will set my First LO eggs for this year Monday night, or sooner if I can't wait lol

Really missing those lil fuzzy butts! I have 6 eggs collected already, my LO hens are back to laying almost daily. Pretty good odds for almost 2 year old hens.

I just ordered turbo tax from amazon yesterday. It was on sale for prime members. Sams also has it on sale. While I could fill out the forms and make all of the calculations, I really like the electronic filing and the easy of just typing in data. Plus once I type in the data for federal, it is there for state taxes too.

Editing to say I have big plans for my tax refund too ~ pay off a car repair, some medical bills, and IF I have enough left over, maybe a hatcher. Most likely there will be no hatcher this year. We could also put the money into our home remodel but most of the things left to do on that cost more than the hatcher. Choices, choices, ... If only I would play and WIN the lottery.
Hehe, you aren't kidding! There is always something to fix, someone needs glasses, electric bill was way too high

TurboTax is really reliable. I use TaxAct, its online or downloaded. I even used it when we had our LLC for our transport business. Ask me sometime my experience working for the "big name" tax prep co's... (privately, and I will be glad to share my thoughts) Its insane, for me was morally unacceptable what folks are being charged and made to feel they have no other options.

Injured toe. Please help.

Found a lot of blood on a hen this morning. It was on her feet & caked on her chest.
After closely checking, I believe her nail from her back toe got ripped off while roosting. (Not sure how yet)
So far, I've washed her feet & soaked the bleeding one in a dilute iodine water solution. Then applied corn starch & "Vetericyn" to the remaining nail on the toe.
She's resting in a box with pine shavings in the garage. (I'd like to avoid a house chicken if possible.)

So, what's next? What can I do about all the blood on her feathers. It's very, very cold here & I don't want poor Honey to go into shock by bringing her into the house. I don't know how the rest will react if she has bloody chest feathers. This is our 1st injury. Never had more than a nick before. My white pullet has a few specks of blood on her back. I'm pretty sure it dripped down on her.

PS- Thank you to the unknown BYC members for their advice on having a chicken 1st Aid Kit on hand. Made this morning easier to be able to treat ASAP.
That may have been @pipdzipdnreadytogo , we have a link to her article about the fist aid kit on our member page. Good article and she made me realize I needed to add more to mine, too

Since the bleeding is stopped, you can probably "groom" the dry blood out, by rubbing the feathers between your fingers. Much like how they preen and work dirt from the feathers. What color is she? If it is a lot of dried blood, may be best to keep her away a day or 2 and let her clean up what she can. That will give her time for the toe to heal also. I had this type of injury in a turkey poult, he kept pecking the toe (it hurt!) and causing it to bleed again! I had to finally confine him in the garage, in the dark to stop him. He caught his toenail on a gutter because he thought he needed to roost on the roof of the house.
It may be as simple as a split nail, or hangnail that she caught on the roost. Think about how many hangnails you have had, I am forever splitting mine and breaking them. I bet there is nothing you could have done to prevent it.

@jchny2000

Did you say you're going to be hatching HERITAGE RIR?

Also...
Could you give an overview of each breed you will be hatching and why you like that particular breed? Are they "heritage" or hatchery stock? I assume you'll have chicks for sale too....

I will have heritage RIR, I have roosters from @SallyinIndiana and some hens from @bradselig that were RBA eggs. Gorgeous deep mahogany.
I like these because they are sturdy, strong, healthy, friendly and produce eggs fairly well. Roos are heavy enough to process for meat if they become a problem. So far, I have had no issues, and my GLW roo was 10 times more aggressive than any of these RIR roosters. Sally's roosters, I would keep more of them anytime. Fantastic flock roos! I have a few production red hens, will give them to a third roo I feel is too light in color, and too small to fit into the heritage line, so those will be rehomed to a family that needs help.
The rest of the breeds, I am going to post my 2015 resolution

LOL like I will stick to it.
got 23 eggs today...its 5 degrees out....BRRRR...happy new years eve everyone...well this weather is no fun to work in building coops....got a 16ft wall built now putting wire on it
Stay warm and be careful! Hope 2015 treats you and your family well.

Quote: I find breeders that ship properly and try to stay within the state, or just over state lines. Honestly, my usual hatch issues is caused by too many post office transfers to get here. I would guess 35% of my flock were shipped eggs.

Blukote has sure helped me on many occasions too. Good post!
Quote: Or you could use an old "hospital" remedy... Mix Hydrogen peroxide 50/50 w water spray on her and wipe off w a towel. If she gets too wet for weather conditions give her heat for a few minutes t dry her faster.
Yes, I use peroxide when mom has a bleed from her dialysis to clean up her shirt. Will remove any hint of blood. Then I throw it into the washer. She gets very upset if a pretty shirt is stained.

well im done for the day...and frozen it was like 5 outside...got one big wall up with the first set of wire....I hope it goes up faster then what it did today...happy new year everyone
Be sure to keep warm and dry!

I'll think I'll wait at least 24 hrs before trying anything. Feather cleaning will have to wait. Any recommendations to help her perk up from blood loss or fight possible infection? She's not acting different, I'm just thinking about prevention.
I'd try some raw ground meat (if you can get "clean grass-fed"). Some Lewis Labs Brewers yeast is good to help rebuild (the plain kind with nothing added...can be put into the regular feed or offered in a dish free-choice). Some raw liver chopped very tiny.

Be careful in taking back outside. You'll need to wait until the temps raise quite a bit to re-acclimate. Depending on the weather, you might have the bird inside for a long time.

I put some more eggs in the incubator today. I have 2 more slow hatching eggs in there but I wrapped them in a hot moist towel while I was adding the new eggs. Now the incubator is taking its sweet time to get back to temp.

If anyone out there is wanting some chicks, let me know. I won't be selling purebred chicks yet as I want to be sure the chicks are true. I free ranged the flocks this summer together. But I do have a few right now that I know I don't plan to keep. Straight run of course as I'm not even close to being able to vent sex these little ones.
