I've decided to try an experiment. A fellow chicken lover, who is also an NPIP tester, gave me the 'recipe' for her Tylan egg dip, for pre incubation sterilization and MG preventative. Well instead of using Tylan and a different disinfectant, I am trying Denagard and Oxine. It's all explained on the FB Indiana BYC page, but this is what I'm doing.... All of the eggs are washed, gently, in Oxine and warm water (warmer than the eggs). I did 1 ounce Oxine to about 4 cups water. After washing and drying, they get put in the incubator for 3 hours to open the eggs pores. While the eggs are in the incubator, I made up the Denagard/water solution. I did 1 ml/cc Denagard to 4 cups water. That gets put in the refrigerator. When the 3 hours is up, the eggs get put in the Denagard solution and left for 15 minutes. To keep them cold for the 15 minutes, I'll put them in the fridge. While I'm waiting for the 15 minute soak, I'll sterilize the incubator. She uses alcohol but I think I'll use the Oxine since I'm out of alcohol. Once the 15 minutes is up the eggs get set in the incubator.
I don't have MG in my flock, or any other issues that I'm aware of, but this procedure gives a better guarantee that the babies will hatch healthy, it also helps to prevent early quitting due to egg contamination. Anyway, I'm interested in seeing how it works out. I have 9 Large Fowl Blue Black Splash Cochin eggs going in. My Cochins are laying really well right now, so If anyone wants eggs let me know. I'm going to find out with this hatch if my big boys are the only ones doing their job. I have 2 bantam roos in there too, but they don't seem to be able to make the connection when they mate the girls lol. One is a bantam cochin and the other is a polish, so if these babies come out crested, I'll know they aren't pure lol. They will be a hoot to look at though.
