INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I've decided to try an experiment. A fellow chicken lover, who is also an NPIP tester, gave me the 'recipe' for her Tylan egg dip, for pre incubation sterilization and MG preventative. Well instead of using Tylan and a different disinfectant, I am trying Denagard and Oxine. It's all explained on the FB Indiana BYC page, but this is what I'm doing.... All of the eggs are washed, gently, in Oxine and warm water (warmer than the eggs). I did 1 ounce Oxine to about 4 cups water. After washing and drying, they get put in the incubator for 3 hours to open the eggs pores. While the eggs are in the incubator, I made up the Denagard/water solution. I did 1 ml/cc Denagard to 4 cups water. That gets put in the refrigerator. When the 3 hours is up, the eggs get put in the Denagard solution and left for 15 minutes. To keep them cold for the 15 minutes, I'll put them in the fridge. While I'm waiting for the 15 minute soak, I'll sterilize the incubator. She uses alcohol but I think I'll use the Oxine since I'm out of alcohol. Once the 15 minutes is up the eggs get set in the incubator.

I don't have MG in my flock, or any other issues that I'm aware of, but this procedure gives a better guarantee that the babies will hatch healthy, it also helps to prevent early quitting due to egg contamination. Anyway, I'm interested in seeing how it works out. I have 9 Large Fowl Blue Black Splash Cochin eggs going in. My Cochins are laying really well right now, so If anyone wants eggs let me know. I'm going to find out with this hatch if my big boys are the only ones doing their job. I have 2 bantam roos in there too, but they don't seem to be able to make the connection when they mate the girls lol. One is a bantam cochin and the other is a polish, so if these babies come out crested, I'll know they aren't pure lol. They will be a hoot to look at though. :)

Where did you get your denagard? I have thought about testing the procedure I read on FB to compare the hatch rates and the chicks.

I have 2 black star rooster chicks that hatched Wed 1/14. Anyone interested in them for free. I also have a white sumatra that is limping a bit. Its legs are not the kind that need a bandage but it does need a pet home. I don't know if the white sumatra is a male or not. All 3 are free.

Our parakeets are currently laying better than our hens. Over the past 14 days one parakeet has laid 9 eggs. During that same time, nine hens laid 8 eggs.
We're really looking forward to our hens stepping it up!

I ordered it from First State Vet Supply. I got my Oxine from them also.

I placed an order for sunflower seeds today. Anyone have advice for planting them. I'm thinking of planting them on the west side of the largest run I have. If there are enough seeds maybe along the west side of the the duck run too. But I'm not sure if I need to start seeds inside or not. How far apart to plant them, if they need to be planted in at least 2 rows like some corn does. Pretty much my daughter wanted flowers and sunflowers should grow fast enough to keep her attention.

So does anyone know if the homemade cabinet bators work as well as the sportsmans? I have an old mini fridge that needs a new job ;)

I would go for it...its just as good...and if anything goes wrong and its well built then its operator error...you know...set the levels to were they need to be and monitor it before you put eggs in...experiment on how to increase humidity as well so you know what to do when the time comes....hope this helps

I'm placing an order for Spring trees (my back hurts just thinking about it!) and they have a minimum order of 100 trees of each variety. I am looking at Norway Spruce (they could potentially sub White Pine if they are low on Spruce) and Sugar Maple (maple syrup trees). Would anyone be interested in purchasing my extras? I would hate to throw them away and couldn't possibly plant 200! Let me know if anyone is interested. I'm thinking $1 a tree.

Stress causes pigment loss in brown eggs. According to them.

Yeah, but I don't know what these girls would have to be stressed about, living in the lap of luxury and all. :hu She's a new layer, so I'm betting it's just getting the equipment fired up and working out the kinks that caused it.

Ameraucanas. He only have ameraucanas and Rhode Island reds

I figured as much, I more mean what variety are you getting? ;)

I'm curious to see how it turns out, although personally... not sure I would prefer medicating eggs over just having some not make it naturally... But that's my personal thought on that.

I more wanted to say how handsome Ronin is! :drool Makes me miss my Po boy. And Lavender is lovely as well! I so love Cochins and want some more--that's another one for the 'list'! (It's not getting any shorter... )
