INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

If he's your famous escape artist...was able to get in with them then you're going to need to improve your setup so he's not able to get out and back to the others.
I found and repaired immanently. My new pup had dug a whole under the fence, so I filled it in and put a concrete block on it.

My babes displaying! I've seen them a few times across the yard etc. this is the first time I had my camera and they were close. So funny! They are from June hatch. Every time they do this it's a chain reaction. One displays then a min later the other starts.

Then it's Oh crap "Mom" is leaving us! Haha!

Very cute

Mom and I will order ours soon, hope that' okay! Probably today, but I'm not sure, so soon.

Poor thing!

Some people! I'm not sure, since it's in her beak, if there's anything you can do beyond just keeping an eye on it anyway. Hope she heals well!

I love my Plymouth Rocks, too. Such attention hogs!

I have partridge and barred girls, but I think their personalities are great no matter the variety. They're a close second favorite to Dorkings for me.

Yeah, people are crazy when it comes to correcting breeds. I've reached the point where I want to correct things like the RK signs, but I'm not sure I'm up to the effort of convincing people I do actually know what I'm talking about. Easter-eggers are an especially touchy subject, too. I was reading a conversation on FB the other day where someone asked if their Easter-egger might be a pure blue wheaten Ameraucana, and when they were told that no, he is an Easter-egger, the owner started ripping on the pictures of true BW Ams that people were posting and saying they looked like mutts as well. It was like, what did you expect when you asked?

Really...

How adorable! So out of curiosity, does that mean they are both male, or do the young females do this, too?
I hate talking to people about EE's any more. They act like I'm being mean... I'm not just trying to help them learn something, I was happy to learn the difference, guess I cant understand why everyone don't want to learn.... oh well

Thought I would share some pictures of the day. The girls are unimpressed with the snow, but unfazed by the cold or otherwise.

Lots of milling about, scratching and pecking:

She Who Sleeps Standing Up and Fancy the Partridge Plymouth Rocks, and Skua the red sexlink, just chilling.

She Who, looking quite severe.

This is the path down to the doghouse, which has clearly been popular (Skua makes another appearance here) :

Fancy pants:

Traffic jam!

These crazy birds have also been eating the snow! Maybe they think they can eat their way out of winter or something.
hu.gif

Georgie the Black Copper Marans. These were the shots of her after she cleaned every bit of snow off my boots.
lol.png

Frou-Frou the Splash Marans
love.gif

Rosie the Sebright, otherwise known as the cutest little birdy in the coop
love.gif

They're even eating snow off of each others' beaks!
lol.png
(It's Skua again, too. Not sure why Debra Jo was cooperating for this!)

They also got a dust bath going in the coop addition:

Biddy-bird the supposed-to-be Speckled Sussex, clearly the center of attention:

Of course, there are some grumpy faces.
roll.png
Whiri the Light Brown Leghorn and Huka the Silver Lakenvelder are clearly not having any of this winter stuff.

And to finish up, here are the two crazy ones, Ihi the Golden Campine and Marama the Fayoumi, who have decided now is a good time for a molt. Why, girls? Why?!
barnie.gif

Good looking girls all. Sorry you had o do all that shoveling, I'm so glad we have not had that much snow yet this year and hope we don't the rest of the year!!!!

Chickens in the basement must be going around

. This one had some frost bite that wasn't looking so great so I pulled her in. She escaped her cage while I was cleaning it. The cat was less than thrilled.
I have 1 in my back room with my baby goat, he has upper respiratory problems and is not liking his meds. but is loving being back inside with mom ( me ) again... he tries all the time to get back into the house, he don't like any of the flock, always alone.

My guys showed none of the signs you are talking about. Sorry. My guys were fine 1 day gone the next. Sorry for you loss wish I had something helpful to tell ya.

I would really try to bank some money for a necropsy with the next bird. In my experience you can throw more money away buying and treating with medication after medication when you don't know what to treat for and you will keep losing birds.

Could you sell some unused stuff on craigslist or amazon to get together $75 or so? Any unused apple products that you can sell at a game stop for cash? Also, both of the necropsies I had done invoiced me so you don't have to have the money in hand now, and the University of Missouri necropsy was only $55, shipping overnight was less than $20 (just so you know what to plan for).

The necropsy will give you some piece of mind or at least tell you how to treat so you don't keep losing birds. Two going down in a period of a week sure seems like there is something happening health wise. Coccidosis does not alway have the bloody stool but usually has a bird sitting all puffed up and not wanting to move around the day or two before the bird passes.

Also for the future, I believe you need to keep a bird refrigerated not frozen for a necropsy. Just FYI so you know how to store a bird when you are able to do the necropsy.

I'm so sorry you are having to go through this. It is the unfortunate part of having animals and it is frustrating with chickens because so many illnesses/diseases share the same symptoms. It is really hard to diagnose issues without a professional. I try to tell myself that I learn a bit more with each issue/incident and it will enable me to be a better flock owner. It doesn't help the heart though!

I went to our local TSC last night to stock up on sav a chick and some other stuff for the first aid kit I'm making up . And a lot of their stuff was expired. I told them about it and they will reorder new supplies , they said the chick days start the last week of February. I'm thinking of picking up some chicks from them, my RIR and Bared Rocks are due to shipped April 7-8. It's so hard to wait that long. My only problem is ,the coop won't be ready until april. Husband needs to reroof the whole thing and will have to wait for the spring weather.
I love seeing all the photos of the birds, though it makes my waiting game even harder to deal with.

Thanks for more info. I had pulled up the MO website early this morning. If we lose another bird I am not sure we really have a choice. I was wondering about shipping as well as Frozen vs. refrigerated as well as - how do you ship? I never imagined how hard it would be to lose 2 chickens. I think it is magnified b/c of my FIL passing so we are already in big time grief mode. They really are our pets more than I imagined when we started this adventure! We all try so hard to do everything right but these things happen. Even the dog is depressed. He lost his buddy. He stood guard over the quarantine last night and he whimpered on and off all morning. DD really wants to show chickens for 4H but now I am even more paranoid about picking up something and bringing it home to our flock especially when we will have youngsters at fair time.

So appreciate the help and support. Indiana BYC'ers are the best!

Welcome to the thread. Feel free to jump in any time.

Also want to let you know that we are currently in the planning stages for "Chickenfest 2015". I am polling everyone to get the best possible date for them to attend. If interested in attending please pm me (barb s) by Feb 28th with you preferred date/month.

Chickenfest is a meet and greet of of people from all over Indiana and a few other states as well. You will meet a lot of super awesome people how have a great deal of knowledge on raising chickens, as well as all other poultry and fowl, as well as just about any other subject you might be interested in. You will gain valuable information and tips just by talking to any one of them.
This year we hope to have a few demonstrations on FF (fermented feed), raising meal worms and a few other things as well.

Be sure to follow this thread and the Chickenfest thread (there is a link at the bottom of any of jchny2000's posts.) for upcoming updates.

Thank you . I will keep it in mind ,where would this take place ?

When I checked in on my chickens tonight, one of my hens was making strange head movements. I checked back 10 min later & she still was making those groovy-looking moves. Her crop feels hard & large. I'm separating her for tonight. (Of course now that she's walking around our basement, she's no longer doing the head thing & seems normal.) My plan is to observe & research tonight. I don't want to attempt anything until I actually know something's wrong.

Could someone please give me a good link for symptoms of impacted crop. (There's no squishy feel or odor.) I want to read about the symptoms & treatment. I've heard often that by the time a bird acts sick, it may be too late. She could have just eaten too much. I haven't seen the head neck stretch for the last 20 min, so perhaps it's nothing. Oh, she pooped once. It looked normal.

I feel so much like a 1st time mom with a newborn. Am I over-reacting?
Update:
The crop emptied overnight & behavior is normal. I put her back into the flock.

Could she have just eaten too much?
