INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So I dropped 4 eggs in the coop and the hens got to them before I could now they won't stop eating eggs! What can I do to stop this they've eaten eggs before and stopped on their own this all just happened an hour ago so will they forget by tomorrow?

That coolerbator is pretty awesome. You should try to work a viewing window, or a webcam to watch them hatch! :)

I think I am going to get my incubator fired up! It will be my 2nd time hatching!!! Eeek So nervous!
theres a viewing window at the top

and as you can see im around the birds all the time, these are birds out of the first batch out of the coolerbator

We used easter eggs with clay in it and put them in the coop...or golf balls. They will give up eating eggs because they cant break these.

We took our children out to play at the museum last Thursday when it was so cold. They loved it. Plus we found out that on the 21st this month, there will be a special engineers day. The description for that days activities read: Local engineers will lead activities and demonstrate how engineering has contributed to our health and safety. Attend a special presentation by the museum’s Extraordinary Scientistin-Residence, engineer and former NASA astronaut Dr. David Wolf.

Now I'm sure my children will be fascinated for a moment or two to meet a real astronaut, but I think DH will enjoy it even more. So as long as the 21st is not a nice warm day, We might just be going back to the museum.

And for @flyladyrocks I saw a sign that reminded me of you too. There will be a special program on March the 19 for Robotics.

Editing to add that there will be a lesson on how to make cheese on Sat. the 21st. Who knows maybe a lesson on making soap will be offered later in the year. Here I am googling cheese making and the Children's museum links pop up. Then it happens to fall on a date I already plan to go. Saturday the 21st is looking like a fun day.

No it zipped fast. I was surprised. Although I had to help both of the last two bantam orphingtons hatch I think the changes in temps and humidity throw things off.

Lucky you! I read a lot about call duck hatching before I got them and a lot of folks said they would usually need help hatching out! Sounds like that little darling is a strong one right from the get-go! :D

I don't know what's up with this post and why it won't quote properly! :idunno Anyway, replying to the Craigslist Silkies. I just wanted to mention something on the suspected toe wound. This apparently isn't uncommon in 'fifth toe' breeds, having a split toe like the one visible in the foot picture. It's not from an injury, just a genetic anomaly.

Good on you for cleaning them up! Sounds like they were in desperate need of a better home! :/ I can barely look at the farm section of Craigslist anymore, seems like there are so many animals in such a poor state that it breaks my heart. Just makes me wonder how anyone can think that's okay. :( I feel bad when I wait one day longer than usual to clean my girls' coop!

Is anyone else noticing an uptake in egg production?  I was down to just one or two a day, and the last 5 days have averaged six a day.  There were 8 eggs in the nest boxes yesterday!  Looks like some of the vacationers are back on the job.  Just a few dozen more that need to get with the program......

Yesterday was an egg boom! Got 9 eggs out of my girls! Today, we're back to two. And one of those two came from a certain Silkie who I can tell is thinking about going broody. I just know she is! :rant She's lucky she's cute.

When we had egg eaters some years ago, I bought ceramic eggs for the nests. Same idea. They peck at them and can't break them. I know there are a few folks that have reported this not working, so no guarantees. It did work for us, though. :)

Edited for, you guessed it, wording!

There aren't really words enough to describe how much I want a coolerbator like yours or how I need one like I need a hole in my head. I would have birds coming out of my ears, and I would still want more.

Case in point, I just picked up seven bitties at a Rural King. Really hoping I don't have a bunch of roos (they're supposed to be sexed, but we all know how that goes). 1 SL Wandotte, 2 Welsummers, 1 Australorp, 1 buff Orpington, and 2 Easter Eggers (billed as Araucana, but again, we all know better).

Edit:

Anybody know where and if I should/could find Silkies or Rocks? My daughter made a list of chickens she really wanted, and I stupidly told her I would try to get some on her list (because he younger brother was also making a list as homework). I told her to pick birds that would be good in a little backyard, non-flighty and good with children and cold weather... and what does she pick? Java, Leghorns, Malay, Modern Game, Penedesenca, Phoenix, Plymouth Rock, Shamo and Silkies. I think she has a penchant for leggy breeds and ones that were pictured in partridge-type colors. I'm hoping I can make do with the probable Welsummer roo (which my youngest has already claimed, Hail faerie, cheese and rice!)

My son took the assignment far more to heart and only picked ones that were supposed to have those qualities. Wound up with Ameraucana, Araucana, (heard Aseel hens were good with kids and cold, but want more opinions. Same goes for Shamo and Malay. Game birds are just iffy like that), Australorps, Barnevelders, Brahma, Cochin, Delaware, Dominique, Dorking, Faverolles, Houdan, Jersey Giant, Langshan, Naked Necks, Orpingtons, Polish, Plymouth Rock, Silkies, Sussex, Sultans and Welsummers. We can cross a few off that list, and I'm fine for the most part with what we've got.

But it brings me to the question of the hour--as a veterinary student and lover of science fiction--if we bred Cochins, Malay, Langshans and Jersey Giants, could we not eventually achieve the hugest, fluffiest, friendliest chicken on the planet?

I really enjoyed your wording above.

Thank you for the warm welcome back to the thread!

To those of you have asked to be my Facebook friend, I apologize for not responding~ in some cases, I only know people by their BYC screen names. I appreciate those who've asked, but I very rarely look at it and have never even listed anything on my profile.

Since I am on the computer so much for graphic design work, I need a break from the screen. And our BYC Indiana thread is much higher on the priority list than FB!!

@jchny2000 @pipdzipdnreadytogo I appreciate the info about flock leaders! I didn't realize that there could be more than one. For a long time, I only had five pet chickens, but then I became active on this site! Now I have 11, and I'm afraid that seeing all of the posts of adorable baby chicks has stirred my maternal instincts! haha @kabhyper1 has always especially been a bad influence by posting such cute photos. lol

@barb s Thank you! Of course I will be at Chickenfest!

@Thriftymom6 I'm partial to your chocolate orp chicks since my Bonbon girl (on my avatar) is my favorite chicken. Did you breed or buy hatching eggs?
@racinchickins
Yes! My chickens have really increased production in the last week or so. I've had so many eggs that I hard boiled some today~ I thought that warm, colorful eggs would be nice on a cold, dreary day.

Tip for anyone interested: Adding salt to the water really prevents shells from sticking.

@ellymayRans It was a fun surprise when the three black bantam Cochins from your hatching eggs began laying green eggs! I hadn't remembered that Cochins lay green eggs. Here are two examples. My tiny Cochin named Monday lays quail sized eggs. haha Cochin eggs make my EE's eggs look more blue.

@Acornewell You are a wonderful, conscientious person to rescue the craigslist chickens! I would definitely report this cruel case of animal neglect to your local animal control and Humane Society, and the Indiana State Board of Animal Health.

I also urge everyone who sees cases of animal cruelty -- through craigslist types of ads, swap meets or wherever: Please don't look the other way. Those animals need your help. You can remain anonymous when reporting. Take photos with your phone and write down information about the person, location, phone, etc.

This link is from Michigan State University's Law School, which is an excellent resource for all kinds of animal issues/laws that are listed by state.

It is amazing to read about so many topics we have discussed on the thread. The first link is a brief summary, and the second link has more details.

Okay, I'm off of the soapbox now!
