INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I really enjoyed your wording above.

I write to please ;)

I just finished writing the introduction to a formal chemistry lab report... it was everything I could do not to get creative with it, and even then, I'm pretty sure it'll gleam with more unwanted personality than any other report my TA's going to see this year.

We took our children out to play at the museum last Thursday when it was so cold. They loved it. Plus we found out that on the 21st this month, there will be a special engineers day. The description for that days activities read: Local engineers will lead activities and demonstrate how engineering has contributed to our health and safety. Attend a special presentation by the museum’s Extraordinary Scientistin-Residence, engineer and former NASA astronaut Dr. David Wolf.

Now I'm sure my children will be fascinated for a moment or two to meet a real astronaut, but I think DH will enjoy it even more. So as long as the 21st is not a nice warm day, We might just be going back to the museum.

And for @flyladyrocks I saw a sign that reminded me of you too. There will be a special program on March the 19 for Robotics.

Editing to add that there will be a lesson on how to make cheese on Sat. the 21st. Who knows maybe a lesson on making soap will be offered later in the year. Here I am googling cheese making and the Children's museum links pop up. Then it happens to fall on a date I already plan to go. Saturday the 21st is looking like a fun day.

There aren't really words enough to describe how much I want a coolerbator like yours or how I need one like I need a hole in my head. I would have birds coming out of my ears, and I would still want more.

Case in point, I just picked up seven bitties at a Rural King. Really hoping I don't have a bunch of roos (they're supposed to be sexed, but we all know how that goes). 1 SL Wandotte, 2 Welsummers, 1 Australorp, 1 buff Orpington, and 2 Easter Eggers (billed as Araucana, but again, we all know better).

Edit:

Anybody know where and if I should/could find Silkies or Rocks? My daughter made a list of chickens she really wanted, and I stupidly told her I would try to get some on her list (because he younger brother was also making a list as homework). I told her to pick birds that would be good in a little backyard, non-flighty and good with children and cold weather... and what does she pick? Java, Leghorns, Malay, Modern Game, Penedesenca, Phoenix, Plymouth Rock, Shamo and Silkies. I think she has a penchant for leggy breeds and ones that were pictured in partridge-type colors. I'm hoping I can make do with the probable Welsummer roo (which my youngest has already claimed, Hail faerie, cheese and rice!)

My son took the assignment far more to heart and only picked ones that were supposed to have those qualities. Wound up with Ameraucana, Araucana, (heard Aseel hens were good with kids and cold, but want more opinions. Same goes for Shamo and Malay. Game birds are just iffy like that), Australorps, Barnevelders, Brahma, Cochin, Delaware, Dominique, Dorking, Faverolles, Houdan, Jersey Giant, Langshan, Naked Necks, Orpingtons, Polish, Plymouth Rock, Silkies, Sussex, Sultans and Welsummers.  We can cross a few off that list, and I'm fine for the most part with what we've got.

But it brings me to the question of the hour--as a veterinary student and lover of science fiction--if we bred Cochins, Malay, Langshans and Jersey Giants, could we not eventually achieve the hugest, fluffiest, friendliest chicken on the planet?

I have partridge silkies laying up a storm if you wanna take a go at hatching. ;)

Thank you for the warm welcome back to the thread! To those of you have asked to be my Facebook friend, I apologize for not responding~ in some cases, I only know people by their BYC screen names. I appreciate those who've asked, but I very rarely look at it and have never even listed anything on my profile. :p Since I am on the computer so much for graphic design work, I need a break from the screen. And our BYC Indiana thread is much higher on the priority list than FB!! :D @jchny2000 @pipdzipdnreadytogo I appreciate the info about flock leaders! I didn't realize that there could be more than one. For a long time, I only had five pet chickens, but then I became active on this site! Now I have 11, and I'm afraid that seeing all of the posts of adorable baby chicks has stirred my maternal instincts! haha @kabhyper1 has always especially been a bad influence by posting such cute photos. lol ;) [rule]@barb s Thank you! Of course I will be at Chickenfest! [rule] @Thriftymom6 I'm partial to your chocolate orp chicks since my Bonbon girl (on my avatar) is my favorite chicken. Did you breed or buy hatching eggs? [rule]@racinchickins Yes! My chickens have really increased production in the last week or so. I've had so many eggs that I hard boiled some today~ I thought that warm, colorful eggs would be nice on a cold, dreary day. I hadn't remembered that Cochins lay green eggs. Here are two examples. Oh My! They don't!!!!!! At that time there was a very young Olive Egger but gosh I would have never thought he would be fertile!! I'm so sorry for the mix up. I never noticed pea combs in your pics either! (Insert banging head here!) Pretty little eggs though. I may have to try me some of that pairing. Lol! Seriously though shoot me an IM for PayPal if you have one, if not, an address works too! I'm not happy about you not getting what you asked for.

@ellymayRans Haha -- It makes no difference!!! That teaches me for being away from this thread where I learn so much. I should have remembered that the hatching eggs were brown -- Duh! But the "chicks" (as we still call them) look like Cochins to my untrained eyes. They have feathered legs and are similarly shaped. Some things are making sense now, though. Their eyes are kind of small. These girls run up to us like they're friendly, but the two normal sized ones can be a little aggressive and skittish. All three of them sometimes bite us-- not peck, but bite, which is weird, but it doesn't hurt at all and they don't do it viciously.

So, I have part Olive Eggers, part Cochins? Do you know what mix your Olive Egger is? Just curious. I will take some photos of the girls.

Since I'm limited on space, I've always planned to keep Monday, the miniature one, and find excellent homes for the larger two in the spring. I figured it wouldn't be hard to rehome them since they're laying hens-- and they lay every day. I just planned to keep them together through the winter since they and "mother" Bonbon have their own coop. I expect Bonbon to go broody again sometime, so I want to make room for her next hatching eggs-- whatever they may be. I like to try different breeds.

Bonbon and little Monday have a tight bond. It's pretty cute! Monday will be heart-broken if Bonbon goes broody this spring.

Haha! I forget you hatched them. Lol. So yeah, their eggs are a cream color. My Olive Eggers are Black copper Marans/Ameracauna. I'm going to have to look back at their hatch date. That really surprises me. I saw you got eggs in August so I'll do some math and research.

Anyone know how early cocks become fertile?? I'll read but always more fun to ask around! ;)

I wouldn't think it would be difficult to rehome bantam Olive Eggers but I would happily buy them back if you don't mind. Fun little project birds!!

I don't know what's up with this post and why it won't quote properly!

Anyway, replying to the Craigslist Silkies. I just wanted to mention something on the suspected toe wound. This apparently isn't uncommon in 'fifth toe' breeds, having a split toe like the one visible in the foot picture. It's not from an injury, just a genetic anomaly.

Good on you for cleaning them up! Sounds like they were in desperate need of a better home!

I can barely look at the farm section of Craigslist anymore, seems like there are so many animals in such a poor state that it breaks my heart. Just makes me wonder how anyone can think that's okay.

I feel bad when I wait one day longer than usual to clean my girls' coop!

Really...I don't know much about silkies. These are my first. Does it split even though the nail was split. Or are they born with it? Her toenail you can tell was split. So interesting. She is a sweet girl. When I bring her up to check and rebandage her...I let her sit on the counter and hang out with me when I am cleaning up or doing dishes. She just looks out the window and purrs and coos. So sweet!

I absolutely will not look at Craigslist anymore. I just cant. I have no trouble finding homeless abandoned animals...well really they find me! My most recent is a kitten that I found in a Meijer parking lot on a busy holiday weekend. She would have been run over for sure. People saw her but just kept walking past her, it is so sad. And she was under the first car straight out of the exit door. People saw her for sure. I would not have had the heart to leave her, especially when she came right to me. I suppose she has earned her keep. She caught a mouse in the house that snuck in. And she catches mice in the barn all day long!

I too feel bad when I don't clean my girls coop, if their waterers are dirty, if they look sad...etc. They just melt my heart! Getting ready to head out now to let them out!

sally : you'll prob be "safe" to go to the museum on the 21st - it'll prob be about an 80% chance that it will NOT be a warm day (but then again, you are about 5 ~ 6 hours farther south than where i live . . . .)
we had planed to go this past Saturday but it was just so nice outside. The children got a family membership for Christmas this year so the first Saturdays of the month is a special day for them. They get to go inside an hour early and avoid some lines. Plus they can take up to 2 friends with them.

I wanted to give you an ovation, but mine were out for the moment, so I'll reply instead.
There'll be a special spot for you in heaven for taking in those beings in need. I'm certain of it. Animals find us, too. We have many animals, and the only ones we purposely got was 6 of the chickens.
