INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Sounds like it may be time for a night stake out.

Got the babies vaccinated just a bit ago! The hatchlings from today are just Sooo Itty bitty! The broody is doing wonderful with them and her oddly huge baby silkies! Haha! Cracks me up every time I look in there and see them snuggling with her. Then I see this teeny tiny head pop out! They are being very nice to the day Olds which is the only thing I worried about so all is good!

I just can't stand it! Haha! I have never let a broody raise the chicks but since I have her inside with them I feel much better about it. They are in our living room but I can't seem to stop watching them and taking pictures! Lol!
I am like that on any broody hatch

Just adore the interaction when they hatch, and watching momma teach. Expecting a surprise from my chinese geese, have yet to find an egg from all 4 hens!
Did you do the marek's vac's?

The one officer is a good family friend, and he is concerned too. Kids are kids and will have fun.. its when the fun turns into other things that adults need to intervene. DH has security cameras he picked up at Frys and is installing them also. We moved a lot of tools to the barn, another concern, not sure the age of the kids, but I estimate around 11-12. They will be caught! Its sad they think harming a cat or chicken is a fun thing to do.

Yeah, I try to vaccinate them all for Marek's. Some I haven't just from lack of funds at the time and this time no big mess ups!! Glad to report all those OD'd babies are almost fully feathered and very much alive!! Lol!

One of the 4 Mille Fluer Cochin chicks just hatched! The other 3 have externally pipd! I love seeing a broody with chicks but hate not being able to see them!!

I agree! When Bonbon hatched the first Cochin, all I saw were two tiny chicken feet standing under Bonbon's fluff.
Btw, the two Olive Egger girls decided to cancel being broody. lol
Congrats on your Mille Fleur Cochin hatch! I bet they will be beautiful. And I can't wait to hear more about your Emu eggs!

@leslea Lovely story! I felt as if I were there. It's obvious that you're a professional writer. You mentioned that the characters are from some of your previous work. I'm not familiar with them or the time period of the story, which probably explains my only concern: the word "muteness" to describe someone with a voice impairment.
@jchny2000 Congrats on your lumber purchase-- it's always great to get a bargain!
I hope the police catch those hooligans! Seems like police usually check with the nearby high school because kids like to "brag." That is just horrible-- from chickens to cats. If I had a surveillance system or something that would help, I would loan it to you. Google how to keep thieves off your property. I know you've discussed the pros and cons of getting a guard dog. Apparently, a dog is one of the most effective deterrents. I like this post:

@iamfivewire Very Handsome EE!

I, too would love to have Light Sussex if anyone around here has any.
I have a Light Sussex rooster and a Light Sussex hen hatched December 20, 2014. I have vaccinated them for Marek's and for Newcastle. Willing to sell. Please PM me if interested. So sorry to hear about the evil in your community. Animals should never have to suffer at the hand of the unjust! Praying for you and your children.

I have my first broody hen ever...go figure a silkie!

I keep checking on her. Today is hatch day, one I know of hatched yesterday...but I think it was set a day earlier. So today I hope to hear more peeping.

I havent been moving her at all, I saw a little head poke out. Am I okay to check under her. Or should I try having patience for once! LOL

I peeked a few times. Even grabbed a couple eggs while externally pipped because they were shipped from CA and I wanted to make sure they weren't malpositioned or struggling to hatch. Of course they immediately started chirping and I promptly returned them. I had to, I wasn't going to let them get that far and not make it from lack of help!!

Congrats on the broody and I wish you lots of fluffy bitties today!

Out of the 4 MFC that hatched it looks like a nice variety of color/pattern. I can't wait to see them filled out! Now here's to hoping I got 1 boy and 3 girls in the mix!! ;)

Re: Miss Bess, thank you! The time period would have been c. 1915-1920. I came in right at the 500 word limit...wish I could have put a note in there somewhere about the time (have a character say it or have it be obvious from the description). I had started on this whole tangent about a cow poke hassling Bess for when the biscuits would be done, and had to cut it all. Thanks for taking the time to read! Jessica and Bess are from my Montana Brides series. Jessica's love story is my WIP. I say "WIP" but I have barely clocked any words on it since last fall. The holidays, the school breaks, the snow... Anyway, the contest was a nice way to get my mind back into that world, you know?
