INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

We released monarchs # 96-99 yesterday. I thought a few of you may enjoy these pics. Looks like #100 will hatch Thurs or Fri. After that we have about 10 more caterpillars to finish up before the season is over. Sorry that I can't send any over to Indiana. These ones will migrate to Mexico.
Good news about that there are hay fields surrounding my house and from time to time I walk the dogs over to them and during times of growth before they are harvested I see monarchs fluttering through them usually a ton of little yellow butterflies but 2-3 monarchs or what I believe are monarchs... After they harvest they go away for a week or tow but they come back

I have seen a maybe 50 or fewer of the females this year, and lots yellow butterflies that @daskhan mentioned. But I have only seen maybe 5 male monarchs this season. Normally I would see one almost every day. Some of that could be that I've been inside more this season enjoying my AC.

I think roosters are given a bad rap... My preggo thought my roo Henry was a mean rooster because he "mated" the hens then she thought he was mean because he chased the other roo around... I thought it was because he was dominant... Now her mother thinks he's mean because he rushes up to her when she has food and tries to get the food out of the scooper.. Mating is natural... Showing dominance is natural trying to eat because he's hungry is natural... But because you have little ones I understand... My niece had a chick.. Not chicken but chick fly behind her and graze her back with her wing and she thought she was being attacked was afread of them for months... I might be interested in him if I get some Marans I'm trying to buy in about
two weeks if you still have him by then

I stopped by his house one day and his wife came out and she had a few scratches and bruises on her leg. She said it just doesn't like her and only respects her husband. That makes sense to me because she never goes around them or feeds them. My youngest who is 6 had this look on his face like uhhhhh...excuse me?? Your chicken did that?? I remember when I was 11 or 12 being chased down by a RIR Rooster that had a show no mercy attitude. He was evil

I thought he was going to give me the small coop they have and was just going to isolate him until I could rehome him, but he wants $100 for the coop. My huge coop will be done by the end of this week and I'm not spending that kind of money on a jerk chicken that I don't want. I could use my brooder box but it is full with babies.
I was wanting BCM hens but he is the only one. I'm getting a few BCM from a farm up north in a few weeks too.

Quote: Oh my goodness! That is awful!!! I understand its a dogs nature (sometimes) to do what dogs do. That is why it is up to us owners to keep them contained. I will let her know to make a report! I say one animal is one too many. What if one of her small children were holding a chicken and the dog attacked it harming the child. I say it has happened one too many times in this instance)

It is sad the violence commited resently by animals it is even sadder that people invite these animals into their homes and don't properly train them or allow them to just roam... Even though I've mentioned a number of times wanting to get a lot of land and letting my dogs roam.. This makes me rethink that idea because it's possible although remote that they would eventually venture off the land and cause harm or get injured in some way... (FYI my dog is a three legged chocolate lab... She never causes harm to my cats or chickens but I'd hate to hear anything negative..)

I think all your chickens are beautiful and no I didn't see a roo cept for the ones you mentioned also black beard is beautiful
Thank you much. I thought that 2 of the BA's were roosters??? which is bad. 1 would be ok but 2 is 1 too many. I get roosters whare I dont want them and dont when I do want them... Rooster luck to the max here!!!!

Hello all! Brad here on the Southside of Indy, just found this thread of fellow Hoosiers. I'm new to the chicken world but so far so good! I have 3 RIR's, 3 ISA's, all 18 weeks old. Five of the six are now laying. Also have 3 BA's and 3 Americana's. They are 4 weeks old. Here is some pics of the coop and run as well as my girls having some yogurt.

I got my first egg today! A little green one. I asked my husband to hold it for me while I finished raking out the coop and one of my fake Rhodies was staring at it in his hand. He asked if it was hers and she gave him a "well you're stupid" look and wondered off. I told him that she should lay a brown egg. In my defense for being so condescending, he had called me goofy for how excited I was.
