Not at all, I let my scovys hatch their eggs. They are a tough species to hatch in an incubator, and take at least 35 days. That ties up a lot of space during the spring I need for chickens and quail. I plan to separate my geese next year for the breeding season and let them hatch too. I do bring the hatched babies indoors if they are to be sold so they bond with people though. Any that stay here I leave with the moms so they comingle into the flocks.

I have 1 more broody silkie hen on 8 to go!!! She has about 8 days left on them then I'm done for the season.


O I forgot to tell ya'll I got my Romeo 2 buff hens. he is a partridge buff I got from Brad a few years back ( 3 I think, I would have to look it up ) I just put them together tonight. He likes them

but they aren't so impressed with him yet.
I have a splash Rooster and a white hen and a blue hen to put with my splash hen, will put them together tomorrow, but I am concerned about Splash's new babies they are just a few days old. Should I wait to put a new rooster in with her and 2 new hens? and if so how long you think I should wait?
Also I have a new blk roo for my blk hen that is sitting on eggs, should I wait for that pairing also?

Thank you all for the advice. I think the bird may have been too injured. It passed this morning. My friend also had two others that didn't return home.

I wish people would keep better containment on their dogs. Especially since this is a repeat issue with their neighbor. she said they only say they are sorry but never offer to do anything about it. I would not be so nice if it were my birds and rabbits.

Think I would wait till babies are away from mom. Some roosters are naturally good dads, but hard to judge ahead of time. The hen on eggs, if she is a dominant hen it may be ok... but she may also attack him! If you have extra hands available you could carefully test the situation.

that is what I was thinking too... well looks like I have a temp pen to put up....

Welcome! Quite a few of us recommend obtaining a shed and converting it (you can often find them for free or for a great price on craigslist). Lumber has gotten so expensive that you won't be able to build a smaller coop for the price you can pay to convert a shed. All you really need to do to a shed is add ventilation to the top, add roosts and a pop door and most people attach some kind of a run.

Here are a few pics of mine to give you an idea.

The outside (I had a tarp up as a wind block over winter since I get such bad wind)


Inside before windows were added on the back side. Mine originally only had the pen on the left side (with the sign) but chicken math hit and I built two more pens.

That is a great idea. Thank you. There are so many crazy ways of making a coop. I'm more for function than looks. Lol
