INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

What I'd like to say about this is 1.) we all love it when you vent because it's you telling us your problems showing you care about our thoughts and trust our opinions
2.) it's always good to vent it helps release stress so that we can continue to fight the good fight
3.) people who say they are just animals to me are mean hypocritical people...
To explain what I mean by that.. Although I am a religious person sorta(fuzzy on that) I also believe in evolution couldn't call myself intelligent while raising chickens and refusing evolution... But the point is we (humans) are just animals too so that statement holds no merit with me to why they should go and not the person " we need them to survive, they do not need us" also another quote I like is humans are a virus we destroy almost everything we come into contact with if someone were to only cure the planet of her sickness the world would thrive again. Now I don't always advocate the extinction of the human species but there's no good reason (in my mind) that we should hold ourselves higher then any other living creature or elemental thing we are all equal we all have our roles to play non is more important then the next(I think)
4.) if and when I get to the point I have a vehicle and a grasp on what I'm doing here I will more then gladly help you share your load of work and care. even if it's just driving up on the weekend or something to help out.. I'm also sure that I'm not the only one...hell might even count to college volunteer work or something idk... But I think there's help out there if you simply ask.. I bet we could like start a shelter or something where we all spend a few hours or days volunteering there
I thank you all for reading and I apologize if my words were to harsh for anyone or to offensive
Thanks for the kind words and the offer of help.

I think some are thinking I have " A Rescue " I don't. I take in a rescue from time to time, when I have the space and money ( well I never have that but you know what I mean ) I don't get in over my head. Take in more then I can handle physically. Now mentally, that's another story sometimes ( like this year, its been real hard ). I even have to county call me sometimes, but if I don't have to space or money I can sit aside for said animal I refer them to others. I have a rule... No more than 1 sick animal at a time. No more then 2 healthy animals at a time. not that I would love to be able to take in every critter that needs it, I know what I can do and what I cant. And doing more then that to me is being a hoarder.. and that is not what I am. I re-home 99% of any critters I take in as rescues. I do have " My critters " then I have the " rescues " I do what I can and I know I cant save them all... but you all have to admit 41 in 1 year ( includes my own and rescues ) is a bit much. That is what has sent me over the deep end so to speck........ Never have I lost this many or even close in just an 8 month period. Just so ya know 32 of that number were my chicks, 15 silkies I bought for a friend and the rest I hatched. 8 goat kids ( 3 bottle babies ) and 1 old dog that had been starved to nothing.

I thank all of you for letting me vent, I do respect your opinions. I love this thread b/c even tho we all have our own ways about things, we all respect life, and care for and about our critters. Not a person here would be caught saying " it's just an animal " even the animals used for food are treated well until d day.

I came home from work yesterday very excited to see this baby for the first time! She was MISSING.

The other fact I noticed: Mom's crop was really full.

Dunno what happened between 2 hours before I got home, and when I got home, but Mom must've eaten the chick for some reason. Did the chick die and Mom was cleaning the nest? Dunno. I don't know if poultry even do that sort of thing.

I moved Mom and remaining 6 eggs into solitaire. I'm so BUMMED!
So sorry

that stinks bad. I had to get rid of a BJG b/c she was eating her chicks.

Thank you Janet for everything you do and have done for the thread! If it wasn't for you this thread would be here!

So work hasn't slowed down much for me. I'm now managing two stores at wince for another week. Then I hope it slows down for good! I still have several people to reply back to regarding chickens .I haven't forgotten. Will try to get back here soon. I actually took some vacation time at the end of next week! And it's not a stay-cation! Getting away from the house and animals for several day. Much needed break!

Sadly I've started to come home to less roosters. Well came home to find a hawk eating a Cochin! So frustrating.
So sorry I feel for ya I really do.

Hi, all. I know I haven't been terribly active here in the past months, but I thought I would stop by and let those of you who admired her through my pictures and stories that my beloved Frou-Frou left us today. I am beside myself with grief at the moment, so apologies for the lack of detail. I'm just without the words right now.
It is very hard to lose the special ones, I enjoyed reading about her adventures.

Well I don't have very good news either.

Went to check on my Lavender Orp hens this morning and found one dead, just sick over it. She appears to have been egg bound, and with all this running around all week I didn't catch it. They had a hard molt and had not been laying. My other hen seems ok but am really watching her close now. Am introducing the pullet and black cockerel (both still very young) to the pen so she is not alone. Orp rooster is out of the pen until the molt is finished and laying resumes.
They have been the healthiest, most vigorous breed I have aside from my EEs, really blind sided by this loss. Guess it can happen in any breed, production or heritage.
So very sorry

seems this year has really been hard on all the critters.

I just keep hatching! ! I guess since it's so easy anymore I just keep doing it! No water, forgot to turn the turner off and still just hatch with ease! Crazy! Lol!!
Wish I had you luck. You think you could send some this way???????

Because of the wedding and busy life I had neglected to gather and found 2 more broodies with 19 developing eggs!
I pulled the hatched chicks and threw in the eggs. I have 4 left to hatch with 2 external pips.

I've given first dibs to my uncle which he picked up 21 of the last broody fiasco but if he doesn't want them would anyone here be interested?
Out of 19 eggs 2 are Olive Eggers, 3 from my Egyptian Fayomi, 2 bantam cochin, 2 Marans and 10 brown eggs. Either from Wyandotte, RIR or Australorp. These would all be under my Black, Blue or Golden Cuckoo Marans Roos. (Chocolate, Olive, White, Brown and cream colored eggs)

$20 for all!! ;)
PM if you'd like!

They will be a bit staggered of a hatch but most are going to be hatching within a week or so.

Thanks for the kind words and the offer of help.

Hatching had always been a horrible overall experience with the Farm innovators styro bator. Set 42 hatch 10! With my homemade incubator and this Brinsea my hatches have been set 20, hatch 18! Yes I've had a few early deaths, a few die while zipping but overall Awesome hatches! Very happy! I truly believe that all you need is a good incubator!!

Anyone here raise guineas?

I ask because a friend had one of her keets attacked by the neighbor dogs. So we are trying to figure out what to do about the injury. Do we treat it just like a chicken injury?

Here is the info I have: It has some meat taken out is a way to describe it. It's still alive this morning. So that's a good sign. Last night it was panting so I wasn't sure it would live. It may be broken, I haven't messed with her a whole lot because they are so scared all the time anyways. And she acts like she doesn't want to stand all the way up. It's all in one piece just missing some feathers and flesh. There are some puncture wounds on its body too on both sides and a little more meat missing on the underside the wing.

I have a picture also. Not sure to post it, I case there are some squeamish stomachs this morning ;)

Hello

I don't raise guineas, but I think I can at least give you info on how to treat the wound because it sounds somewhat like one of my hens that got injured. Though I don't know what to do if the bone is broken, but she also might be sore from bruising. Had a rooster attacked by a coyote and had bruising on his neck and had the hardest time holding his head up for about two weeks. I am fortunate enough to have a poultry vet nearby that looked over the hen and the rooster(but it was from a weasel that time for him) to give me meds and guide on how to treat her. If you can get some (not sure if you can buy these online), get Nolvasan solution and silvadane cream. The Nolvasan solution with be a blue liquid and the cream with be white. Next thing you want to do (this will be a two person thing probably for most of the time for wound treatment) is to have someone stand the bird upright on its feet in a tub or sink and have warm water run over the wounds for 15 minutes, twice a day. Also to make sure to get the water under the skin near the wound. The warm water will help stimulate cells to regrow. After running water over the wounds, gently push water out that might have collected in the abdomen of the bird. That is also key to prevent further problems. Next take the bird and if you have a syringe, fill it with the Nolvasan solution and squirt it on the wound and under the skin. Then take some silvadane cream and in a very thin layer, apply to the wound. The solution and cream will also need to be applied twice a day so do that after every time after washing the wounds with warm water and to clean any cream that is still there when washing. Repeat all of this until the wound has healed.

If you can't buy the solution or cream, I would definitely still do the 15 minute of warm water washing twice a day and instead of applying the cream and solution, use organic unpasteurized honey. The honey should be of thicker consistency than normal honey. More of like a spread consistency. This will also help prevent infection.

Hope this helps you and I wish you and you keet the best of luck!

I do, they are naturally flighty. They are also a really tough species, as long as it doesn't get an infection it will probably survive the injury. The wounds should be kept clean and care given just like a chicken or other poultry. The panting is from pain..and fear. If you want to pm the picture to me I can better help what to do for it.
ETA @DarthLayer gave very good advice on the wound treatment!

Speaking of guinea, I may have a cancelled order.. that is am not getting return calls on a hatch that was "sold".... Grrrrrr! Should be chocolate dundotte, lavenders, pearls possibly whites in the keet colors.
Anyways, if thats the case I will have keets I will let go VERY cheap.. otherwise they will be grown up for the freezer. Anyone interested please send a PM. Hatch has started, will have a total count in 2-3 days.
Bourbon Reds (turkeys) are laying well again, finally. I have 2 orders left and may have poults after those are covered. Only thing I will be hatching the rest of the year is turkeys. If my lavender orp starts laying I will hatch hers also. Oh and can't forget my brooding muscovy hens!

Quote: Not at all, I let my scovys hatch their eggs. They are a tough species to hatch in an incubator, and take at least 35 days. That ties up a lot of space during the spring I need for chickens and quail. I plan to separate my geese next year for the breeding season and let them hatch too. I do bring the hatched babies indoors if they are to be sold so they bond with people though. Any that stay here I leave with the moms so they comingle into the flocks.
