How's everyone doing today the thread kinda stalled today lol like I'm a member of eight and not a single post anyone going to the poultry auction In terre haute on the 26th? I'll be at racins tomorrow I'm looking forward to that
Anyone here in the IN thread breed Welsummers? I'm thinking that might be the way I go for a nice flock rooster because, if I'm thinking it through correctly, I would be able to put him over the right hens to have both black and red sex links plus my Welsummer girls for some purebred chicks......it would be the best of all three worlds, lol. Right now I have three hatchery Welsummer pullets and they are all right (two of the three lay good, dark eggs - the third pretty standard brown) - but if I'm going to invest in having a rooster I'd like to get one from good lines for temperament and also for some good genetics with regards to egg color.
Cuddles Update:How is the swollen abdomen symptom? Has it gone down?
Quote: With her illness the pecking order may change. I bet she will bet back on feed soon, just keep getting food into her. I am so glad she is recovering!
I check my flock for creepy crawlies on a regular basis, and as far as Poor health, not my flock. I happen to feed and care for chickens very well. My chickens go to the vet when needed also. Most of them free range and the ones that don't ( the littles due to threats from above ) are provided meal worms alive and dried, veggies from house scraps and the garden, in addition to regular feed.Check them over for parasites and up their protein intake for awhile, but otherwise chalk it up to poor health or stress, is my only guess. Anytime something major fluctuates, my egg count drops abominably. New roo? Old roo gone? New place? Change in the weather? Too hot? Yeah, pretty much anything can count as an anovulatory disaster in chickenville.

Welsummer Roo's are great, I have never had a mean one and my boys have always been great to the ladies too. I have 1 welsummer hen that came from a breeder not a hatchery, and I have 2 hens that did come from a hatchery, the eggs from the non hatchery hen are 100x better, the hen is bigger and much prettier, DH says he don't care what they cost he wants to get from breeders from now on, but he really has no ideal..... lol the one hen cost us 35.00. And I cant see spending that kind of money, unless I was wanting to breed or show. ok I got off topic sorry, I was about to post a link to one of our members but then I seen @Jchny2000 already did.Anyone here in the IN thread breed Welsummers? So happy to hear the good new of Cuddles recovery.Cuddles Update:
I haven't had to tube feed Cuddles for 2 days, & the previous 2 days before, I only tube fed 1x per day. I do have to bring her inside at night &/or morning to fill her crop by offering treats. Tonight DD was feeding Cuddles some hard boiled egg (on the kitchen floor). As I walked past them, Cuddles bawked at me. I turned, looked down at the hen, & asked if she wanted some bread. When she saw me take out a loaf of bread, she went crazy with her happy egg song screams. She waddled across the floor to stand at my feet. Her personality is coming back!
Her abdomen doesn't feel heavy & squishy. Firm. Her poops are looking closer to normal. Of course it's hard to tell what's normal in chicken poop. It's no longer surrounded by a pool of white goo, so I'm saying it's better.
The biggest symptom remaining is that she doesn't push her way to the food like she used to. When I call the flock for treats, she comes but doesn't run. She pecks for scratch, but doesn't bull-doze her way to the front. At bedtime when I compare crops, hers is not as full. (That why she came into the house for a bedtime snack.) I also have not actually seen her eat chicken feed.
