Thanks everyone for the well wishes after my surgery...a little sore still, but doing good. Chickens are happy that I have spent more time with them!

extra what? Roo's, chicks?Chickrookie I might tackle the extra in if you can't find someone else
I don't get why I have to do all this? Its not like I make a killing from sells here. What is going to be next, tax what little I do make!!!! I understand the chickens, keeping track due to AI but goats? Why don't I just do my horses too, they already keep track of my dogs. I bet they know how many bags of trash I throw away a week. Would the like to know what times I use the restroom? and how many times a day??? Sorry just think this is all too much!!Got our registration done today with BOAH so we are in compliance with the new laws. I added all poultry and waterfowl we currently keep, and also cows & sheep, we have had some discussion about sheep recently. I am really not sure I want to fool with them, but am reading up on it.
Its free, you can do it online HERE

I've found it very difficult to find unmedicated turkey feed. I've had to resort to either gamebird feed or All Flock.Got a bit ahead of myself last weekend-was passing a feed store a couple towns over and stopped in on a lark to see about feed with animal protein (my preference). They had a turkey feed with pork protein so I bought a bag. Got home and really liked at it. ....it's medicated with monensin. So, useless to me. Not really sure when I'll be back over there or even if they'd take it back--anyone here have a use for it? I could haul it to Lebanon with me this weekend and will give it to you.
Quote: more info here: http://www.in.gov/boah/2642.htm there are FAQs that are somewhat helpful. Still not entirely sure about whether poultry are voluntary or required, but leaning towards thinking they are required. Also, if you have mandatory species on your property, it is required to register whether they will ever leave your property or not.
What species are included in the premise ID program?
Indiana’s law includes: cattle/bison, cervids, swine, sheep and goats. Poultry and aquaculture are also part of Indiana’s plan. Although it is not mandatory, equine and camelids may register voluntarily.
If a person raises animals for his or her own use and the animals never leave the owner’s property, does the premise need to be registered?
Yes, Indiana requires registration of all premises associated with livestock that are bought, sold and/or exhibited. (Exceptions are horses, camelids, ostrich, rheas and emus, which may be registered voluntarily.)
Hoping to pick up 2 piglets tomorrow afternoon for my growing farm![]()
Fun! We are working on getting fencing and housing set up to get a couple. Thinking American Guineas.......

I know the extra paperwork doesn't thrill me either. The amount of money I spend on feed weekly alone.. LOL! I can promise I am not seeing a profit. I already kept spreadsheets on my hatches, births etc, so the tattooing and ear tags is all that's new for us. I am most upset by having to put ear tags on my hogs! Have not seen anywhere that states tattoos are acceptable for them. Emailng BOAH today that question, am assuming its for visual ID purposes.

So if they (swine) remain for our own use (food) it appears I can "group tattoo."
If I sell any, then they get tagged if I am reading correctly.
Other ID Formats:
Group Identification Number (GIN)
All animals must meet the following criteria:
ETA since I slaughter onsite that fits perfectly.
- For pigs born and raised on the same premises and
- Moving in the group direct to a slaughter facility and
- Not mixed with swine from other premises from birth to slaughter and
- Slaughtered one after another as a group, not mixed with other pigs at slaughter
- Appears on documents moving with pigs; GIN number/tags do not have to be attached to pigs
- May be used for pigs moving within a production system across state lines following various restrictions (contact State Veterinarian for details)
