INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

What should I look for when trying to decide what barred rock to keep i have two that are darker then the rest is that good or bad

Are you trying to determine sex? The darkest ones are usually female, lighter or gray ones usually male. You can also tell sometimes by their head spots before they lose them. This isnt 100% accurate but a good guess.

No I wasn't I had 13 br chicks and was trading 4 and was trying to determine which to trade.. Only two were darker then the rest I hope I didn't have 11 males and two females that would be a horrible ratio for straight run... Plus she wanted female not male.. Geeze I'm worried now.. One had a really big comb so I'm pretty sure that was a male but the rest were kinda light lol ugh

Yes they do I have a Boar nanny that has the problem, iy comes and goes.

As far as SQ I don't have a clue, but BR's always have a place with me, they are cold hardy, good layers and most get along with anything you put them with.

I just brought in Kelogg last night, he is sick now too. If it is MG ( guess I will have to take one of them in and see for sure at the vets ) and if it will come back if stressed and such I will have to cull them all. I want a healthy flock and just cant afford to give all these meds all the time and I don't want the uninfected becoming infected and that will break my heart, but it will just have to be done.
Don't get me wrong if it was something I could cure, I would do it in a heart beat!! Bubbles is very special me and will hate to have to cull her.
Can you tell me what causes it so I can try and stop it? It is not just my Silkies. It has hit at least 1 of every pen other than my EE/AM groups. And Waddles, knock on wood man I hope it don't get to him.
I would like to get as much info as I can, everything I have read just confuses me more. I just cant find anything on MG that don't use mile long words!! And it is so vague with how to treat it and so on.

I had MG last fall and the only thing that I found that really helps with it is called denegard. I get it at poultry shows and it has worked like a miracle drug. It only takes a couple days of treatment and it usually resolves. You can also put some in the water once a month as a preventative measure. It's seems to me once it is in your flock, it will come back, I just had to treat my two newest birds this week. They are quarantined again, right now till they get their strength back, but I went ahead and added the preventive to the waters just so the others don't get it and everyone seems to be doing great. I do check them all everyday still just to be safe, but they all look good. I know what you mean about all the crazy info you read, I just kept getting more and more confused. Let me know if what your vet says if you take one in, I would love to know.

I know I have seen several threads here on BYC - do a search and see what they have to say. I remember some speculation that MG is literally everywhere, it is just more dormant in some flocks than others. I don't know how long the life is of the disease in the soil, but I do know it is something wild birds can bring in and I believe it can be spread through the egg in a small number of cases. Before you cull, I recommend calling the Indiana Poultry Association and speaking to one of the vets. They are always super helpful when I call.

Looks like Moms going to get to come home Tuesday! Dad and I are visiting during the day, my Sis and nephew in the evenings. She is recovering so well they feel she won't even need cardiac rehab.

So I put in my Spring order with McMurry. I breed my own EOs but wanted a bit of color to the egg layer pens so Ordered the Whiting true blues they just made available and some Cuckoo Marans. Kinda excited to see how the whitings do as layers. Anyone else have experience with those birds?

Jchny2000 - Great news about your mom!

Took the kids to see Santa. (As usual we skipped the mall & went to the Bank, where the parents are encouraged to take as many photos as they wish & each child gets a stuffed Beanie toy, giant candy cane, & a long talk on Santa's lap.) Since they were dressed up, we took some Xmas photos too.

As usual chicken pics also ended up in my camera.

Here's my son's baby. She's a little too much chicken for him to handle, but boy do they love each other.

I'm sure all the people driving by our house thought I was nuts.
