INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I'm glad it wasn't snow either. We would have been buried by now if it was. The warm temps have been unbelieveable for this time of year.

Happy New Year to you and everyone else.

I thought that too - until yesterday!

We got hit with lots of sleet. Starting at 3am Mon morning until (well it's still on & off) now it's been a slushy windy mess. We have a few inches of very heavy slush. It's still about 35'F but nothing is melting. This evening the temp will drop into the 20s & the 3" of slushy will freeze into ice. Normally DH takes care of the neighbors' (2 widow's) driveways as well as our own, but the snowblower won't work on this stuff.

As far as the chickens, I managed to clear off a path to the coop, but they're smart enough to stay inside. So thankful most of the moisture has stayed out. I will have to find time for a thorough cleaning today, because it's possible the flip up roof will get frozen shut for a few days. (It's one of the design flaws I have yet to fix.) The rest of the coop & run areas are tall enough to walk inside, so no problem to clean.

just some random chicken pictures . . . . . .

well, I found what was left of Brienne's nest. Most of her eggs had been eaten, but I found five that were freezing cold but intact. I'm warming them by a heater now. The same broody Australorp who hatched three babies earlier this autumn may be going broody again, so I'm hoping to stick these under her. I found some of what look to be Brienne's feathers further down the road from her nest, and I'm hoping she made it to safety. I'm pretty sure this new dog is responsible because, when it comes to chickens, his loving discipline just turns off completely. She was our children's (and my) favorite hen.

Is this Brienne in the picture? She is a very pretty hen. I hope she comes home and how long has she been missing? Good luck with the eggs I hope they hatch for you. I know I'm always afraid to have a favorite duck or chicken they always seem to be the first to go.

Talked to the neighbor family whose parkway had all the feathers after they came home... the stray dog I'm harboring killed her in front of their children. Poor girls (both Brienne and the neighbor girl I talked to). I think they suspected (or knew) she was mine but had thought I might be mad about it. I'm not even sure what I should cry over first.

Also, did find out who owned the fighting cocks. This nice family picks them (losers) up super cheap at flea markets. Make good a stew as any other bird, I suppose.
