INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Getting a bit huffy about people making fun of me or worse, not even raising chickens yet telling me i should have them outside & stop babying them cause they're just stupid chickens. I was told to stop naming them. I just contacted them & informed them to worry about themselves & until they're raising chickens (like the kid thing) keep their opinions to themselves. Ok needed to vent lol
That was what farm families did to keep the kids from being too attached and not wanting to eat Bessy or sell Fred. I recomend naming them something like catchatory, fricacee, fried, roasted, etc.etc.etc....

Our Rooster was named Fred and my daughter was way too attached even though he chased her daily :(
Anywho...some kids are just more able to deal with the farm life it seems..the kids that were raised from day 1 like that...Like my brothers family. They have a boat load of bunnies for 4-h and such. They could be playing with Fluffy in the afternoon, then by dinner time are helping Mom skin him for dinner.

If I ever did such a thing in front of my daughter(age 7) she would need therapy. She is a born animal lover/rescuer and no matter how hard I try to explain the cycle of life, she will not have it. She has even sworn off meat. She loves our chickens as pets and wants to start "a law to protect chickens from being kept in tiny cages"...she knows all about the commercial chicken industry. I told her we can try. I was the same way and still am in many ways. I was just discussing this with some friends...some people are just born with that passion for animals.

Don't you just love it when people have an opinion on something they haven't a clue on.

My 6 wk olds are still in a cage in the garage (with a heat lamp now that it is cold. My coop isn't even finished yet.
Just ignore the ignorant and do what you know is best.

My chicks are in our basement in one of our giant dog crates. They have ladders, perches, and names (and a heat lamp). I'm building a small tractor fir them for the front yard so that they can get used to being outside until the coop is finished. Just trying to figure out what to do if we have more than one rooster in the bunch. My kids will not stand for these being dinner. Maybe someday, but not now.

Just finished my coop and my 6-7 week olds are going out tomorrow night. The 3 week old is going with them. I was one of those guys who said " they are just chickens" but now I'm terrified to kick them out lol. They are in my bathroom bc we didn't have a place for them so everytime I'm in the bathroom they come to the side of the cage and talk to me. Don't think ill be able to eat em.
