INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I will probably process a couple myself just so the kids can see how it's done, but I was told of a place my coworker uses that only charges a couple bucks per chicken to do all the work and they come back vacuum sealed, ready to freeze. I'm contemplating using that service.

I wish I could find a place like that! Then I think we could do meaties with a little less guilt! First year with chicks so I'm hoping it's something we grow into. Maybe I'll toughen up a bit?

My grandmother taught me how to do it 15 or so years ago. It's never really bothered me. Meaties grow so fast, I don't get attached to them. Now if I ever have to cull one of the other hens, that'll be a different story.

@newkfarm my father in law has done it a lot. He's really pushing for meaties. Do you keep yours all together?? I suggested a separate tractor to help me not fall in love. Maybe just feed water move and stay away? I probably will fail at that too!

One more pic in loving memory of Rhonda and @pipdzipdnreadytogo 's girl Skua. RIP Rhonda- you were such a sweet girl and we miss you! This is one of her last days:
Aw, she looked like she was a sweetie. :love I've been missing my girl, too. She was a doll... and a bottomless pit when it came to food!

Lots of Updates..... Sister: My sis is home. I was unhappy about the reasoning. (No bed space at the hospital & nursing home rehab center that accepts Medicaid. Since her life was no longer in danger & she was released from ICU, they sent her home.) The hospital ordered a SEPAP that should arrive later this week or early next week. They said to continue to use the O2 in the meantime. (I still find it strange that they didn't loan her one since they kept stating how important it was while she was there.) They gave her a walker & ordered PT at home. My dad will be scheduling dozens of tests. I went to visit yesterday, cooked dinner & helped tidy up. Lots of work to do there because neither can clean & they have lots of "stuff." Of course I feel the same way about my own house. I've been preoccupied lately, & the clutter takes over quickly with 2 kids, 2 dogs, dozens of chicks, & 1 overworked me! Well with all the busy days, the only recent pics I have are of a Spitz. She/he's 3 weeks old & the "spitz" just grew in. DD's experiment update: She got an A on her sci fair project but is continuing the experiment for 4H. This is her 3rd (& likely final) hatch. There are more eggs in the incubator than her experiment. I have no idea how they got in there?? , but she's keeping record of these eggs.
I've been busy and must have missed your posts about your sister. :hugs Sounds like a complete ordeal. Keeping my thoughts with you and yours! I love your little Spitz! :D I don't know if I missed it or I'm just braindead (which is quite likely at this point in the semester), but what was your DD's experiment this time?
@Mother2Hens and @pipdzipdnreadytogo Yes.... @hbrown322 and I want to know where you got your frizzles :caf
Well, I've never actually had a frizzle... I did get a chick out of Meyer Hatchery's black frizzles, but he was smooth feathered.
Here are a few of the Chicken Train. We still have to add wheels, we are taking them off of either an old mower or using old wheelbarrow wheels, not sure which he decided on for sure. One of my ameraucanas two more amaraucanas
Oh, wow, I love this! Awesome job!! Is that a chicken swing you have hanging in there? P.S. your Ameraucanas are Easter-eggers. ;)

once the larger coop is built, the meaties will stay in the tractor and the rest will go to the bigger coop. The meaties don't seem to have the personality that the others do, they just eat and sleep.

yeah, I asked about them in another thread and just got a response. I'm disappointed for sure. They're still beautiful, but not what I thought I was getting.

Pictures of my silkied Cochin babies from last weekend. Here are my girls, Abra:

I'd been busy, so they hadn't been outside in a while, It was a shocking experience, apparently.

The boys loved playing in the box, though. Rigby in the box and Ramsay outside of it. They were trying to chest bump, I guess. Look at those fuzzy hackles!

My sweet Abra getting her hugs:

And one last bonus picture of Ramsay getting hit in the face with his own wattle. It was a windy day. Rigby sure looks glad his wattles aren't as big as his brothers'.
