So many choices!
Most popular, Goldens (all that hair!) or most popular, Labs? Both likely to be easily trained and not aggressive, although I've met very nasty individuals on both breeds, so it's still important to select carefully.
Less popular, Flat coats. And my personal favorite, Chesapeake Bay Retrievers, who have never been popular, fortunately, because they are also guard type dogs, who will either be well trained or not...

Thanks!!!!!!!! I’m a fan of Goldens and Labs. Always had Labs or Lab mixes my whole life and known several wonderful Goldens. We also had a Golden when I was a kid but I barely remember him LOL I do like Flat Coats though! Theyre cool!!!!!!! Isn’t there also a Curly Coated Retriever? Those seem cool too. I’ve always LOVED Nova Scotia Duck Tolling Retrievers (Tollers) but heard they’re more like a herding breed in personality and energy, etc. LOL I like Chessies but knew an aggressive one so I am wary LOL

I did forget about the Curly Coated and the NS Duckies, both available, and the NS dogs are very nice.
Must be firm to have a Chessie!

I had to Google to make sure Curly Coated was a thing LOL so it’s okay. And yesssss I love the NS dogs!!!!!!!

And yes makes sense. This was a family dog (not my family) so I’m sure that contributed Protecting the family and all.
