INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I really want to hatch chickens again... I really miss the early morning egg collection.. And those rainbow eggs.. These are the times I sit down and have a talk face to face with my Muscovies. Hoping that telling them "Lay eggs again right now!" will some how work. Winter I despise you, but love the wonderful scenery you create.

DS wanted to bring in a good pic of "his" chicken for Show & Tell.
Here's the one we made:
(Her shark-fin comb came from a former injury. It sort of fits her rough/tough personality, so it's not all bad. I'm sure I'll be sharing the many adventures of DS & his Chizzy in future posts.)

Of course while trying to take a nice hen portrait there are always some strange poses.
Look! A Tap dancing chicken!

I'd take them in a heart beat! Wish you lived closer!

I'm going to South Bend Saturday morning if you could meet there. I have 6 left I'd sell for $5 each, they're just babies though. Message me.

Our last turkey poult passed yesterday evening.

So sorry! What a wild adventure its been.

BTW for your project bird, have you considered California White's anywhere in your calculations? Supposed to be great production birds and great longevity, possibly better than Leghorns. We got two last week to try out. They're going on 3 weeks old.

Never bumped into them, but have heard good things. I've already got Leghorn blood in the project babies, so it's free :ya

Swept, mopped, reel-mowed the yard, took kitchen shears to the stubborn spots and made hay for the birds, made cookies and burritos, tended a burn barrel, did a bunch of laundry, did dishes by hand... and I'm still needing to finish my physics homework. Doing my youngest's birthday tomorrow instead of next weekend so his sister can be here for it, so it's going to he busy tomorrow too. Been having to sit on the kids to get them to clean their rooms. Such a busy day, and it's not over yet. :th

Thinking that four out of six Silkies are guys. Going to have a lot of processing to do later this year. Most of the project/broody babies are guys but it'll be a while before they're big enough to bother with. I'd hoped to get enough turkey guys around here that I could afford to process some next year, but that's not happening.

Funny moment of the day:

DS was Student of the week and shared a little about himself & of course his chickens. Today he received a cute memory book from his classmates. It was very sweet and will be cherished. However it did tell me that we need to invite a couple of his classmates over to play. They really need to see what real chickens look like. LOL

I really enjoy children's abstract art. I normally get some of the 3-toed drawings, but this was the 1st time I've seen 4-legged hens.

Boy you'd had a busy & productive day!

Has anyone here processed silkies? Do they taste any different?

Ermagersh! Those pictures are so cute! I used to write and draw a lot of fantasy and science fiction and do lots of world building, but in doing such, I too have made a few four-legged birds. My favorites so far are the "cowlies", which are highly magical, highly intelligent, deeply distrustful (verging on paranoid), light sensitive, four-legged ravens that have the back end of a ball python for a tail and love eating pickled eyeballs. They're a lot of fun to throw into stories and DnD campaigns.

I've never heard anything about Silkies tasting weird, but they do cook a funny color and can look patriotic if served with red beans and white rice :lau I figured we'd barbecue them to make the blue tone a bit less noticeable.
