INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

@Faraday40 prayers being said!

Thank you. Our neighbor who was put on Hospice on Monday, just past away Friday night around midnight.
Yesterday was a very sad & difficult day for many reasons. The sky opened up & we had T-storms, periods of hard rain, and nonstop rain from Fri night through this morning. Our dog got sick & we have Poop-Armageddon. (Floors, walls, dog blankets, poop soaked fur, etc.) Our sewers backed up from tree roots, so the bubbling black-water is popping up through the lower level shower & floor drain in the laundry room. This means that we can't use water or it will just be flushed back up into the lower level of the house. We finally saved up $ to get our line rodded & made an appointment for Monday. (This was before all the rain & we didn't realize how severely slow the drain is.) We've been conserving flushes & not running showers, laundry, dishwasher, etc. We're a pretty stinky family. Add a dog with explosive diarrhea and the stench is incredible. We're washing floors & walls & dumping the buckets outside. Our other dog caught it, so he's adding to the excitement today. The coop/run was flooded for most of yesterday. Thankfully we have sand in the run, so the standing water has already drained, and no chickens were washed away. When I spoke with the neighbors to see how they were doing, they asked if we were building an ark. I jokingly said that my problem was having more than 2 of every animal.

Update:
Things got worse but are finally getting back on track. We woke up Sunday to discover the other dog was sick. Floors, walls, & fur all needed thorough cleaning. We simply shut the door, washed ourselves up in the sink, & dealt with them after church. The rest of day was spent cleaning. Sat's grand total was 7.5 inches of rain. This morning the plumbers came & rodded the sewer line. Now I can catch up on laundry.... but maybe a real shower first.

In all the minor emergencies of the weekend, I forgot to check DS's backpack. He's "student of the week" and supposed to present a poster & do Show & Tell today.
Poor little guy. I never told him to work on it because I didn't see the assignment until he was pulling on his coat and leaving for the bus stop. Needless to say, I feel like a bad mom for missing it. :he

Ursa killed another bird Saturday, but I stopped her from killing a hen. We finished putting wire over the top of the run, but I haven't been able to get *all* of the birds in it yet. There's always *somebody* outside the run when I shut the doors, or someone's escaped via the holes over the nest boxes. The holes are nice because I can reach in and get eggs, and younger birds can escape integration troubles if they need to... but they're just big enough that most of my chickens can somehow squeeze through, if they're desperate enough. Between smaller size, desperation, and a desire to steal food from the babies, I'm always having to toss adults back into their area, and they generally try to get past me when I open the front doors to the coop. Blargh.

Tried to separate the older kids from the bitties that still need heat. Tried them in the old pheasant run and coop for a couple days, but they were wanting back in with everyone else, so I let them back into the big coop. Maybe finding a new home for a few of them soon because a neighbor was looking to buy a pair.

One of the broody's babies is looking like a blue Colombian EE cross. It's got adorable muffs and it's hackles are coming in a lovely blue. Another mostly black (but laced) baby is getting a crest, so I know she's Bowie's. The bigger single combed cockerel is getting red bleed on his shoulders, so I'm guessing he's RIR/WL, and his pea combed brother has barred spots.

So sorry for the loss of your neighbor, our neighborhood is going through an old to new change. Its nice to see young families moving in, but I know my current neighbors are ok with our animal situation.

The poop story, oh my lord. Been there but definitely not that bad. So glad you were able to get someone out to fix it. Excuse my dry heaving over here.
Pic time!

I really love these two!!!

Beautiful birds. Absolutely gorgeous.

I don’t know if any of you watch Coop Dreams, it’s on Discover America (I think?). You can also watch the episodes on their website. It’s about a family from Indy who moves from the city to start a homestead. He starts with chickens, then a garden & goats. Andrew from Agrarian is featured a lot in the first season. They host Coop Camp in a different location every year. It’s a weekend long “camp” with different activites and speakers. This year will be in Zionsville.

Sounds like a great show. I'll have to get DH to look it up! He loves a channel on YouTube. Its a guy who has three channels, one is cars, one is is vet practice, and one is his homestead. He had built his coop and not yet made a way to open it from the outside so he has to climb out the door to the run. Its pretty hilarious.

Craigslist find

Three muscovies, one might be an odd color. Not sure if blue or lavender

Oh I would snatch them up in a heartbeat if I had more room!!!

This weekend we got 12 new chicks. 10 Ameraucanas and 2 California Whites. The Ameraucanas are from my grandma and she hasn't been able to sell them so I've been trying to for her. The California Whites are to add to our pile for production birds. I'm excited for them to grow up!

These two young roosters are officially looking for new homes. The lighter one started crowing this morning & is the alpha of the two.
Both are good with the flock & with me.

I have 7 guineas that need new homes. 4 males and 3 females. They are white and pearled. I also have a barred rock Roo that needs a home. He is about 1 yr old. He can come with up to 6 hens If interested. We are moving and I will be unable to take them all with us. Is there anyone who could take care of these for me? They are used to free ranging. These are please for pets and eggs only. I am a vegetarian and would feel terrible if they were used for meat. I live an hour south of Columbus, OH. Please contact me directly if you are able to help me out. I'm willing to drive several hours to facilitate their re-homing. They are free to a good home. Free insulated coop can be included if needed. It has perches and nest boxes. Currently Guineas and Roo are all living together in this coop. Has room for more and will include heat lamp too! Email: [email protected] or text at 512-636-7724.

My niece from IN is visiting us for her Bday. I got crafty & made her a card.
Below's my masterpiece.
I watercolor cardstock, then emboss it for the cover backgrounds. I like to do paper quilling and then add other misc. embellishments - like Ribbon & Chicken feathers of course! I'm not always as creative with the insides, but this particular card was all about the folding & math.

I lost a muscovy hen (Abigail) overnight. My drake/duck ratio is off and I may need to either find a PET HOME for this guy (the one on the upper right) or find a few more females.
