INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I tried making an album today. (Rather than take up a ton of pages in the IN thread  I know I tend to do that....)

A few pics are repeats, but most are from this morning. It's such a pretty sunny day, the temps are above freezing, and the backyard is not covered with mud - yet. The dog enjoyed running about, I played with my camera, and the chickens had a good time doing "chicken things." After a while I heard the unmistakable cry of a red-tailed hawk, so it was time to put the chickens back inside.

If this album link below can't be viewed, please let me know.

I think these 3 are my fav pics
GG, Laced orp pair, & "Dinner" (I like his unusual Isabella coloring)

Some of the June 17th hatch are getting red combs & wattles. Anxiously awaiting those 1st eggs!

A big day for Mr Wonderful. I finally saw & heard him tidbit for the girls. Maybe he'll start mating soon!
He's not as big as my lavs. He's about the same size as Jewel (our blue orp pullet on left)

Boy is he beautiful and such a sweetheart. He's used to us carrying him to bed every night, so his gentle temperament reminds me of dear, old Mr Dummy. The boys crow a few times around 6am. (I think it's because they hear us letting the dogs out.) It lasts less than 2 min. The garage contains their noise. They get carried out to the coop at 8am and remain quiet all day.

OK, so I'll add one more of Mr Dummy. It's only fair since I posted all the other boys.

I like seeing your photos right here in the thread!!!!

Do you sell orp chicks?

Aww thanks.

Yes. In the spring I hatch A LOT of chicks via the local schools. My DD also hatches several chicks for her poultry science projects. Almost all of these chicks will be in need of homes. I tend to load up the incubators with orps b/c the purebreds are the easiest to sell. EEs and any kind of sex-linked pairing also sell easily. I give away the known males at hatch and all the orps are straight run.

*This is my 1st year with laced orps. I will test hatch only a few of those & see how they look. I'm excited to see what comes from them. I have no idea what to do with GG. Basically, she's only here for eye candy.

I'd love to buy some of your orps hatching eggs! Just finished my Mini Fridge Incubator! Now awaiting for the silicone to dry.

Do you sell them as chicks or pullets?

Do you sell them as chicks or pullets?
I've done both. We sell chicks but my kids always want to keep some. It's not too much trouble to grow some out as a summer project. In mid to late summer we start the down-sizing process, & many of those extra pullets we kept for ourselves must be sold. It works out because that's when people who bought spring chicks at the feed store realize some of their girls are actually guys.

It's more of a fun family hobby. I just figured it's better for the kids to hatch purebreds because they're easier to sell. Also, we decided to buy quality birds rather than the hatchery stock.

I don't have many eggs right now because only 2 orp hens are laying. The new layers should start soon, but those eggs won't be good for hatching. I like to wait until they've been laying for a couple months.

On the bright side, I got my first 3 quail eggs today! (I haven't seen those since Sept 5th.)
