INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

The Seeds Are Organic. I just thought Non-GMO is the same as Organic.
Their title on the bags is Non-GMO Organically grown Wheat and Barley Seeds.
I'm about 1 hr and 15 minutes away.
@Nyla
Is it possible for you to get organic from them rather than non-gmo?

Even if it is non-gmo, chemical fertilizer, herbicides and pesticides are still used in the production which makes for a contaminated seed. This is INTERNAL not just on the surface of the seed so it can't be washed off.

I'm hoping that there will soon be a new classification something to the effect of: "Certified Glyphosate Free" or "Certified Synthetic Chemical Free" seed.

Glyphosate (AKA roundup) for example, was created as an antibiotic. So everything we consume that it has been used on affects us as an antibiotic would....including what our chickens are eating and then their output in eggs or meat.

We always complain about antibiotic resistance and how the factory farms are using them and making us all at risk. But few realize the level of just glyphosate in our bodies. Even mother's milk from US humans tests with levels of glyphosate in it!!!! And that doesn't begin to list all the chemicals used in fertilizers and other herbicides, insecticides, etc....

Okay...off my soapbox. Carry on.

"Organically Grown" .... unless it is "organic certified" with the certifying agency stated... is a phrase that companies use to make folks think they're getting a certified organic product when they're not, unfortunately.

Anyhow - the reason I asked about how far you are is that I'm in the SB area and I'm able to get certified organic feed seed by the 50 lb bag over toward the Shipshewana area.

Corn, oats and Barley are usually about $12.50-$13/ 50 lb bag organic; Wheat is more expensive at around the $18 -$20/50 lb bag organic.

I've been getting mine there but only go about every 4 mos or so and get enough to last.

We are back to getting eggs! Have to keep diligent gathering. Frozen eggs frustrate me, I feel like its a waste. Checking boxes 2x a day again. My Pekin are laying again, expect goose eggs any day. Leghorn, EE/OE and buckeye are back at it. Guineas are fighting so expect to see eggs there soon too.

I'm trying to figure out which male to keep - - for now. I will use one of them for breeding until I can find a more prefect candidate.
I have my old man blk/lav split roo (aka: Mr Dummy-pants), who will stay on as a pet. He's not really doing his job fertilizing the flock, but I trimmed & can still hope.

Here are the two choices:

One of the great grandsons is the lav roo with the leakage. He's nice in many ways (impressive size, nice comb, good feather quality, decent shape, gentle temperament, quiet crow, and nearing maturity ...... but has a lot of gold leakage. I seriously have never seen so much gold! He looks like an Isabel Orp. This guy is nicknamed: "Dinner"

OR
Another one of the great grandsons is a blk/lav split, who does not show any gold leakage. He's nice in many of the same ways (except younger, so I don't know about the crow and it will be a while before mating), but his mama is a mauve (aka Oopsie). If I breed him to my lav hens, 50% would be lav. Also, it would likely improve feather quality, and he was a very early-blooming rooster. It's a very nice trait to keep. However a strike against him is that his beak has a splotch of white on the left side. Because he's 9 weeks, I believe it is there to stay. Also I'm not sure how much those mauve genes will muddy things up. This guy is nicknamed: "Hope."

Any advice on which one would be genetically better?

@pipdzipdnreadytogo and @Indyshent both I think have good working knowledge on colors. There was a calculator someone shared that you could put info into it, and would give you the resulting offspring's colors. Mr. Dummypants :lau wow there is a story behind that name I bet! He is very impressive, but pretty is as pretty does. Low fertility isn't helping your plans. Hope the trim works! He would be my keeper if that changes things.
