INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I have an EE 9 week old cockerel that thinks possibly the muscovies are his harem. In this picture he is "mating" with one (needless to say it's NOT working considering he's smaller than the muscovy hen). My gander, Wilbur, broke it up, and my drake, Snowflake, just stands by and wags his tail.

The EE cockerel is not aggressive. He went through his hormonal teenage stage for one week at 8 weeks old. Started crowing then too.

He is different this week at 9 weeks. Now chases just a little, then gives up when Snowflake stands there wagging his tail about it.

Sometimes he just hangs out with the muscovies and goes over to see what one is doing, without chasing and mating.

Yesterday he was telling the hens where to lay their eggs, which is something that I haven't seen a cockerel at his age do. It's normally much older.

This morning he was guarding a muscovy hen while she was laying an egg. He didn't mate her when she was finished. Which also unusual for a young cockerel.

Needless to say, he's maturing quickly. He may a good boy for a mixed flock, or his own species. I don't know if he can stay here. If anyone is interested in possibly adding him to their flock please pm me. I will watch and keep him longer though.

I didn't know that EEs could be white. Funny little cockerel.

Hi all! I used to be an active member here as ChickCrazed and had Bielefelders. It's been so long since I logged in I can't remember my password (and it is an old work email so I can't reset). So I'm starting over with a new account!

In the two years since I left the thread I moved to a new dilapidated project farm, went back for my MBA (finish in December) and am about to get back into chickens. I just wanted to pop by and say hi! I am starting planning for my coop build at my new place and will be placing a chick order in the next couple of weeks! I hope everyone is doing well and I can't wait to figure out what y'all have been up to!

Welcome back!
"4-7 hens and no roos"--HAHAHAHA!!

I received an email yesterday with Nova's and Koda's AKC registration ID Numbers! They are officially Dual Registered!
Whats very weird is they listed Koda as a : Brindle and White Border Collie. They said his pictures I sent in show Brindle Markings.
I haven't received the official documents in the mail confirming their acceptance in AKC yet. But the email I received with their AKC ID Numbers for a free vet examine prove they are accepted. I even searched their ID numbers in their database and they showed up! :wee:celebrate
So when I get the official documents, I can request a copy of their new AKC pedigree's! AKC charges $34 for a pedigree on top of registration fee's..
ABCA charges $15 per registration of a pup and comes with a free pedigree.

@JanetMarie
Maybe it a feather color thing. Strangely enough, I notice that my birds usually hang with other birds of the same feather color - no matter how many breeds are out there. They seem to gravitate to color.
He also hangs out with the darker muscovy hens. He's looking for a harem that's not his sisters, not the rooster's girls (who won't put up with him) so I think he's settling for muscovy girlfriends for now.

My chicks have been ordered and I have coop plans in hand! My Biele breeder couldn't hatch chicks for me until October so I will have to add them later :(. I'm bummed but it meant I was able to order some breeds I haven't had before. That will be fun. I ordered a Salmon Faverolle (new for me), a Welsummer, a EE, a Cuckoo Maran, a Blue Cochin, a Light Brahma (new for me) and a New Hampshire Red (new for me) from Ideal. It is already late enough in the year that it was difficult to get a chick order pulled together. It doesn't feel that late in the year, but it is! Unfortunately the coop plans are architectural plans and not INSTRUCTIONS. The plans are seriously intense! I have a strong suspicion that I will arrive at the end of the build with a bunch of extra materials and no clue what I missed! This is the coop I am planning to build, with a bigger run and it will be chunnel ready since I can't free range.

I'm planning to start digging the foundation this weekend. My chicks will arrive around the first of September and I'm hoping I can get the coop built in time for them to brood in the coop. I hate the stress of moving them and I'd rather they just start where they will end up. And so it begins!!
