INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well internet is out again. We had heavy rain started around 4pm. Same eerie clouds again so we went to the hallway for cover. I hate using my phone to share social media! Frontier DSL is a joke . I do a lot of online bill paying so i have printed conformation. My phone will send to a printer but it's harder to read.

Smithville phone company sucks in the Bloomington area, so it's a joy here too....

After tons of phone calls Internet is somewhat restored. Mostly works ok but they are sure slow to fix it when its down!
Leghorn flock is now with the goats and Belle our LGD. Working out great! They are afraid of Belle yet but very happy free ranging in a new spot. Hoping they still use the nest boxes. Belle loves eggs! I've not seen her or the goats go into the chickshaw coop yet. We give her 2 raw eggs with every meal, she loves it.
Last doe to kid Eve our oldest Nubian. is looking like she's going to very soon. Udders are filling, baby(s) have dropped. I'm moving our bucks out to a separate pasture so they won't be breeding the girls until late fall. The boys will also get a chicken flock likely the Bresse. So far am impressed with the growth probably not going to get Cornish cross again.

Get to know us all I'd love to know!
What breeds of chicken do you love most?
How many do you have?
What is your main purpose keeping them?
If you process birds for food what breed do you choose most?
My answers:
Leghorn, most eggs produced & live a long time. Flighty and free range well.
UGH chicken math this year, around 90.
My main purpose, food that's sustainable and will produce viable eggs..
I currently use all my extra fellows for soup when its time. If he is exceptional I try to rehome him.
We are trying Bresse out this year for meat birds.

We have just 4 pullets - 2 buff orpingtons and 2 Rhode Island Reds. We got the RIRs for their prolific egg laying and the orpingtons because they are so personable. These are our first chickens and they are just 9 weeks old. Can’t speak for the RIRs yet, but the orps are definitely living up to their reputation.
Keeping them as pets and for eggs. A way for our grandchildren to learn a bit about where our food comes from.
We’re in southeastern Indiana outside Cincinnati.

This is my first season with keeping chickens. I moved out of Cincinnati to SE Indiana last fall and got 6 mail order appenzellers at the end of April. Within 48 hours 4 were dead so Im not very keen on the idea of mail-order anymore...

A few days after that I went to a farm store around here and got 6 bantams out of the bantam bin and 1 barred rock. I didn't intend to get the barred rock but that bird showed no fear and was all kinds of curious when the cashier was grabbing peeping baby bantams so I had to get him....

They are for eggs and entertainment

Those that know us well also know we keep livestock too. I share experiences good, or bad to maybe help someone else have a better outcome. Today was a first, worst case I'll never forget with my goats. I flat love goat milk and its all my dad can drink without issues.
Had a horrible experience with our oldest Nubian goat, Eve. I have avoided keeping the Nubian breed for years, every time I've kept them there's been issues. I took in a small herd of 3 due to a friend's life events. This time is no different. Eve was almost 7, went into labor early this afternoon. Things were clearly not going right at all so I called my vet immediately. He was on a call all the way up by Ft Wayne on another emergency. Called both my backup vets both also unavailable. :hit
Eve died during labor. When I knew she had passed, I chose to open her up to see if the babies might still be alive, possibly save them.. Nope, 1 massive perfect buckling the size of a 3 week old kid! The baby was so large she couldn't birth him. I won't go into more detail there is no question after examining the baby. Those considering goats, message me (PM) For more detail.
Nothing short of a C section might have saved Eve but without those skills myself, Eve's end result would have been the same If I had attempted something that drastic. I'm not a vet, I understand goat anatomy but surgery in an open field.. Sometimes even your best possible backup plans fail and its a hard fact keeping any animals. Bless your heart Eve you were a really adorable loving lady and will be missed.

So sorry for your loss. :hugs Losing chickens are hard enough for me to bear. I know it's all part of the good/bad of keeping animals, but for right now, you're hurting. Again I'm sorry you're mourning your sweet goat and hope you find comfort knowing you did all you could to give her a caring home.
