INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

So sorry to read about the dog attacks on both children and chickens. Irresponsible dog owners really get my knickers twisted!

I've spent years dealing with a neighbor and his succession of killer dogs. I say "succession" because I have been forced to kill many of them.
Last year I started catching the dogs, when they came after my animals, and calling animal control.

Once the neighbor started having to pay fines to reclaim his dogs he began to care about keeping them home. That's the short version of the story. The long version is where he tried to take the dog by force, I ran him off with a .22 and got a restraining order against him.

If I had known $$ was what motivated him I could have saved myself the guilty feelings of shooting the dogs. He would simply replace them with new dogs and start the cycle all over again.

It's been 7 blessed, peaceful months since I have had to deal with him or his dogs!!

Glad our neighbors dog in old and she has an invisible fence. Ours stays in her 20'x 30' pen until all chickens are in for the evening. Then we let her run for an hour or so. I don't think I'll get another dog after this one. We're more cat people.

Sorry everyone! I have a real newbie question here...

I hear everyone talking about buying/making incubators...

Why don't you just let the chickens hatch their own eggs???????

my chickens won't sit on eggs, they have been breed to produce eggs not chicks.
When a hen is sitting on eggs she is not producing eggs. for those that sell eggs to regular customers, they sure don't want all their hens to stop laying for up to 2 months.

Ive been trying to post some pics of my little girl & the BO/RIRs oh well. :)
Today I let them out & 12 chickens were following me every where (always do lol) & i went in. They pecked at front door! I opened it & they came inside so casually lol
It was precious! (Typos cause Im on phone with crack screen sorry)

Ok everybody, I need expert advice over here, like my post from yesterday stated, I think I have way to many roos. Our coop is 8x4 with a 10x4 run attached. We have ten chickens, looking like 5 and 5 hens/roos, I think. If I can't find homes for some of these boys, can I keep them all together? They will also be free ranging in the half acre pasture they are in with our alpacas. I don't want my hens beaten up, and I don't want fighting. They are 8 and 9 weeks old. 3 or 4 bantam roos and 2 LF roos, 4 LF hens and not sure about the bantams completely yet on sex.I may have hens there. The brahmas are iffy. I know Cluck is interested in my bantams maybe, I would like to keep them if I can. Pretty attached, and killing is not an option. HELP!!

Ok, so I filled my FF bucket with feed and water last night. It swelled up alot, added more water. It is covered by about an inch of water atm, but no bubbles. Well I saw one. Its really only about 65 degrees in my kitchen. How many days do I need to leave it before I feed it?

Thanks!

Deb

It will take a couple of days for it to ferment. Then you will see it bubbling. Right now you are probably seeing air bubbles. After a few days it will have a sweet sour smell. Sometimes it could take up to 3 days for it to get started depending on temps. I would let it sit for another 24 hrs and then check it out.
