INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I’m new to the chicken life. My chicks will be arriving in March. I’ll be receiving 11 female chicks. Besides my brooder box. A friend has given me a nice chicken coop & run. I’ll need to do some fixing up on it. I’ve been also considering purchasing a shed & making that to be a coop. I’ve been looking at a metal shed because they’re a lot cheeper. I would put a window & more vents in it. I live in Indy. What do you guys think about a metal shed?
Personally I like using metal. My duck shed has metal sides and a metal roof, but the front and back are only hardware cloth so it never heats up in their like a fully enclosed shed would. Is the area shaded where you're going to have the coop? That would make a big difference in how hot it gets.

I’d do a wood shed…..summers get pretty hot. Check out Menards.
I have a portable building with a lofted roof that serves as my bird barn. It has a couple of small windows in the back, but not enough for good natural light - so my husband put electrical wiring in place and added some bright ceiling lights inside. It has worked out really well. My birds are locked up at night in it and very secure from predators. We have a portable buildings business in Daleville and would be happy to be of assistance if you haven't decided on a building yet. Also, feel free to contact me if I can ever help answer questions or just offer moral support.

No extra precautions here. My birds are completely free-ranged, except for the ducks and geese, so I'm just hoping for the best.
I've kept mine in a lot but mainly due to the rain. They've been out during the past few days. The only wild bird case reported is one duck in Dubois where affected turkey farms are. https://www.aphis.usda.gov/aphis/ou...vian-influenza/hpai-2022/2022-hpai-wild-birds
Same site indicates they cont to monitor through the spring as it usually fades out until around September then ratches back up again. It also implies that songbirds can get it but wild waterfowl are the primary spreaders (I keep telling those geese that stop in the fields in the thousands to rest to just keep on flying).
