INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

HOOSIERS! UNITE!! There are actually 2 older threads for Indiana. Lets get together and make this one active for all of our benefit! After a few confusing months of trying to contact someone to get on Indiana's thread, I've since found out The OP's just aren't active anymore.

This is for those of us that want a place to share local info, from breeders to processors. Food mills, veterinarians that will treat a chicken if necessary. Fun stuff like poultry shows, and just let off steam

if we need to! I started keeping fowl after being away from it almost 30 years. Some of this information was pretty hard to find where I am at, BYC has helped a lot.
Hi
Im in Lafayette IN area. I currently live in an area were chickens are not allowed. But I'm planning on purchasing an acre or two for garden and a few laying hens. My problem is I can't find where to find out exactly how far out of town I have to be to raise chickens. Does anyone know where I can find this information out? Also I'm very excited to be a part of this community.

If chickens are allowed which you should double check first with the city they would be allowed only in the unincorporated areas and the county. There's a map here you can download that will show you the unincorporated areas: https://www.lafayette.in.gov/230/Annexation

I am east of Lafayette in Clinton County just outside of a little town called Forest.
I'm new to chicken keeping, and evidently I'm learning everything the hard way.
The only thing I can think of is to check with your county loading zoning ordinances maybe?
That would be the place to start.

I am looking for some help about the counties of Allen, Whitley, Wells, Grant, Wabash, and Huntington. I was told to make a post here and see if I could get some help. The quote below is my detailed situation, and I would greatly appreciate some insight about these areas of Indiana.
Hopefully some members can point me into the right direction or share some things for me to consider in this process.

We are planning on moving in the near future, due to job. I want to take full advantage of uprooting our life and make my decisions well to allow myself to have birds (and even a garden for that matter) without a bunch of terms and regulations hanging around. (I find it super unjust about how easy it is for a disgruntled individual to dictate another's property but that is another matter).

I am trying to look into county ordinances which feels like alot when counties define the same labels differently. I am taking notes, but I still feel like I could be missing an important snippet here or there scattered different sections.
I am not having much luck finding township ordinances, so does anyone know if those even exist?
(I live in a city so normally look at the city ordinances for stuff rather than township because they are kind of their own township)

I am not looking to keep a ton of birds, but I would like to have enough room in the ordinance to keep 20 birds at once if I so desired. Realistically, I would probably never go above 10 birds, and I would be surprised if I hit 10 as a long term to keep. Birds of consideration are ducks and few geese or chickens. Ideally, I am looking at 6 ducks and maaybe 3 geese for eggs and bug control. And I would prefer to go with water fowl. If I go the chicken route instead of water fowl, I can't imagine keeping more than 3 or 4. And they would be for personal use, no commercial stuff, but I want wiggle room incase I ever felt the actual need to raise or hatch fowl for meat for personal use in the warm months. (And yes I have been reading about these birds for a couple of years, so no worries, I am not jumping in completely blind, just as a newbie)

From my understanding, I would need an A1 property zone? Anyone know how to look for houses for sale by Zone type?
Anyone live in these counties that could share their experiences with local laws and even experience with neighbor interaction?
(Indiana Counties: Huntington, Whitley, Allen, Wells, Grant, Wabash)

I live a good way away from this area we are looking at, so I also assume the culture may be a little different too. I would ask if I am over thinking things, but sometimes the stories I hear online about things not going well just make me feel like I have to pay super attention to possible issues. Is there a better county or two over the others for birds or animals in general?

Hi, welcome to the Indiana BYCers thread! I am not in those counties, so I can’t answer your question specifically . But based on my county (Hamilton) we are either inside a city line whereupon we go by that city’s ordinances or we are outside the city line, in a township, whereupon we go by the county ordinances. (My property is the latter.)

I will be in a similar boat to you in a few years when we start looking for a retirement property. I would start by checking the county ordinances, and then if you identify a city that you might like to live near, check their ordinances. It sounds like that’s what you are already doing. And no, I don’t believe that townships have their own ordinances.

As for searching for properties by zone type, I think a realtor would be able to do that for you. Sorry I’m not much help.

Since you live far away, you can’t just go drive around and get a feel for the area. But I would recommend trying to make at least one trip out there if you can. If you can see in person what areas you like and don’t like, that can help you narrow down your searching.

Can’t figure out how to post (seriously feel dumb) so I am replying to this message, and I don’t know if this is the right place to post this but I am in Indiana and looking to buy fertile Orpington hatching eggs that I can pick up in person. Recently paid for a dozen eggs that were sent via regular post and took over a week to arrive. None were broken, but needless to say, none survived the journey. Would like silver-laced/black or mottled or lavender/split eggs. Anyone have some to sell?

There's farm in New Castle that sells lavender orp chicks and hatching eggs (among others). I've been hoping to get a dozen to hatch out, but they're 1.5hrs from me.

The email they have listed on facebook is [email protected].
