INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I just posted them on Craigslist. So ill see what interest I get from there. Otherwise ill probably be butchering here in a week or so. They are still a little small, but enough meat for just me lol.
ok, I dont think I will be done in a week but if I am I will let you know and see if you still have him.

Quick question for you duck people. My brother wants me to pick him up some ducks at the swap this Saturday, but I need a breed that will migrate this winter. We used to raise baby wild ducks every summer as children and it was always need to see our ducks come back every spring. He wants to get some for his kids, but I'm not sure what breeds I should be looking for.

Thanks!

Mallards, but they won't come back. They will join up with a flock heading south. When the flock comes back north, they will go wherever the flock goes. Usually that will not be your backyard.

I had 3 mallards 30+ years ago. That's what they did. I enjoyed catching them and throwing them up in the air. They would circle the yard and land back in the chicken yard. Great fun.

One day there was a driving snow coming from the west. Out my window, I watched as they took off in formation to the west, banked south and disappeared. Never saw them again.

If the chickens are hungry at feeding time, they are more likely to run to the person feeding them. That said, I would not withhold food, just not give them so much that they still have some leftover at the next feeding time. Wet feed or fermented feed might help too. my chickens are a lot nicer when I feed wet feed.

The Mallard males sure are pretty. Just curious, but when the ducks migrate, who takes care of them or do they become a problem for someone down south of us?
No one takes care of them. They go wild and, hopefully, learn how to survive from other ducks they join up with.

I guess I should also put this out there and see if anyone would be note rested in jumbo coturnix quail chicks. I placed and order and had excessive amount of broken eggs, but still got a good number of viable eggs from it. The seller ended up reshipping entire order for compensation. So if your interested in quail chicks, ill put your name down. I don't want to guarantee amounts until after they hatch, but expecting to have around 50 available. Ill be asking $1.50 a chick with discounts depending on how many you want.

I feed quite a lot of "treats" but I make sure it's varied. I probably split a handful of mealworms between 15 chickens a day. or every other day. I give mine a mix of corn on the cob, tomatoes, various seeds, etc. I try not to give too much cracked corn, but they love it so much I probably feed slightly more than I should. I love it because I can throw it down and they will stir up the litter for me

I also go outside and dig up a plot of grass/dandelions for them. I keep forgetting to put the dirt back when they are done foraging off of it, so I'm going to need to fill in a few holes soon! Actually, I just need DH to get off his lazy butt and help me finish the coop! I swear my hens will be LAYING before he does it!

He's laying on the couch.

Oh, they will hatch alright!

If you are hatching in a cabinet incubator I suggest you use a covered hatching tray. Otherwise it is like taking the lid off the popcorn popper while the popcorn is popping! There will be quail popping everywhere and they are small enough to fit through the ventilation holes in the back.

Good luck and have fun.

simple fix. tell hubby to keep his stuff picked up. that solves the problem right there. my dw was having the same issue with one of our borders. then my dw learned to not leave her stuff laying around.
I know! I have! She is super smart though she can get things from places you couldnt imagine. My main concern is her fetish with electronics and electrical things! I have never had dog or cat that seems to enjoy getting shocked!
