INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

can you let the roosters free range in another area, even if they don't have access to the coop during the day.
Some places like ebay sell cheap saddles, they can be pricey from the hatchery. I think there are threads on here that sell home made saddles. I'm sure once you got a few you could even make you own, they don't look that complicated.
We had the same problem with our girls and an extra rooster (who is now gone). The feathers are slowly coming back in. I bought 2 chicken aprons (saddles) on ebay. I'm using one on a hen right now and the other is sitting on my sewing table waiting to be used as a pattern. I agree that they look pretty easy to sew together. If I ever get some extra time to get mine made I'll post a pic of them (although by then all the feathers will probably have grown back!)

Very excited about hatching out some eggs for the first time! We are at day 10. Candled the eggs and all are fertile and showing development.

They are Crested Cream Legbar eggs, so they are very pretty large blue eggs. My photos don't do the color justice at all. I've been fascinated with this breed ever since I came across them on the Greenfire farms site. Beautiful chickens that are autosexing when they hatch, and with blue eggs!

Also just found out the member who I got the eggs from just lost their mama and a bunch of other hens to raccoons. So I am hoping for some girls to be able to return the favor of hatching eggs. And I can see chicken math looming. This incubation thing is fun! Even though the anticipation is killing me.

M2H- congrats! They are beautiful! Very jealous of the jubilee.

Racin-congrats to you too! Where did you get the eggs from? I have a pair and want to add atleast a few more hens if not another roo or two. I have a pair of rhodebars with 2 eggs growing in the bator! Hoping for pullets lol!

Hope you have a good hatch. My BBS Ameraucana eggs are on day 10 too! I am really excited about this hatch because they are all purebreds (i usually hatched some barnyard mixes too) and just because I love the breed. That is sad to hear that someone else lost chickens. And I know what you mean about the pics not doing the egg color any justice. I was going to take some pics to post onhere of my blue eggs, because they are soooo pretty (like yours). But when I took the picture the eggs looked white, although the eggs are a blue. Anyways post when your eggs hatch and I will too!

Quick question. I have a pullet (SLW) that appears to have diarrhea. She's just as active and curious as the others, she's just pooping different. Do I need to call a vet, or is this something easy to figure out?
there are several types of bowels that are considered ok. U have to remember that a bird poos and urinates from the same place. Im sure it is fine but in case u need more convincing check out the normal bowel movements here http://chat.allotment.org/index.php?PHPSESSID=f5a02f9f75d141ca9ca0658c2d595aae;topic=17568.0

Yep, looks like the ceacal droppings. Should be all good. I just don't want anything to happen to them. Don't tell the others, but Bertha (the one I saw with the weird droppings) is my favorite.

Hi everyone. New to this thread. I live in southern Brown County. Have had my 7 girls for a year, and have my first broody hen. I got some eggs from a friend in New Castle, and it's been a week. Hope to have some babies in 2 more. I'll start going back through this thread for all of the great info I'm sure is here. Thanks for starting it.

i know how it is! I have favorites too! I had researched this before because meat birds always have that consistency and i was afraid it was cocidious. It wasnt! Set my mind at ease how do u take an entire flock to the vet? Honestly it would have been cheaper to start over lol! Glad all is well and your mind is at ease! Rest easy!

I have 7 chickens now!!! My youngest daughter and I drove to McLeansboro, IL (only 1.5 hrs. away) to chickenscratchpoultry.com and purchased two pullets-- an English Jubilee Orpington (approx. 7 wks.) and a Lavender Orpington (approx. 8 wks.) I wanted to post early enough for all of the rest of the Indiana members who are on Eastern time to see because I'm sure everyone has been glued to the thread, just waiting for me to post. : - )

I took a couple of quick (and lousy--blurry and color is off) photos to post tonight, but will have better ones to come. Thank you to everyone who supported (peer-pressured) me into getting more chickens. Btw, when I told DH about the new pullets at the last minute as I was pulling out of the driveway, he acted like I had told him I was going to pick up some milk at the store-- it hardly fazed him. We've been married 35 years, so by now he knows to expect the unexpected!

M2H congrats, They are beautiful. The jubilee has some nice colors already! I love the LO's tail feathers too and she has excellent color already

I know how much you stressed over finding the "right ones"!.

Agreed! I figured since she was acting normal otherwise it couldn't be too bad, if there was something wrong. Glad it's normal! Now I'll wait another few days before they do something else to catch me off guard

. Last time it was learning that at least one knows how to climb up chicken wire...
