INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Mr Salt (thinking mister since most females don't call themselves old. Sorry if you are female.) and any others that have butchered their own chickens,
Once the killing, defeathering, and gutting part is done. What comes next if I plan to put the bird in my crockpot. He is at least 3 yrs old so not going to bake him.
I have this question posted in another thread too. In that thread I think I recall them posting not to cook the bird right after butchering. something about the bird needing to sit.
Tomorrow or Friday night will be the big night. How long should I plan for it to take?
I'm thinking the first step is to catch that roo, boil the water to mix with room temp water in a large bucket, once the water is around 190 then kill and drain bird while the water cools to 160 / 170. Dip, spin test feathers repeat till feathers come out easily. gut and remove neck. This is where I'm stuck at right now.

THANK YOU again for answering all of my questions.

Ok, we'll try again.... I just grabbed every black chicken I saw.

They look like black sexlinks to me. Both should be hens if that's the case. :)
Pip, possibly your non-frizzle chick could carry the frizzle gene; it's recessive if I remember right, so could be overpowered by a dominant. Haven't worked much with frizzles for a few years, so my memory could be in a senior lapse.
No, frizzle is partially dominant, with one frizzle gene giving the desired frizzle look and two frizzled genes giving the 'frazzled' or 'curly' look. Frazzles supposedly have very brittle feathers and can have internal issues I guess? That's why they always say to breed frizzle to smooth, so you don't get any frazzle offspring.

The other looks a LOT different.. Estes Hatchery told me the big hen above is a BCM. Doesn't make sense to me. Estes said the other is a Welsummer but it was completely black, from the black chick above then got gold/red feathering EVERYWHERE.

How much different? Black sexlink hens can feather out anywhere from black with reddish chests, to almost completely black, to even mostly reddish with some black. As I mentioned before, none of the birds quoted in my last post are Welsummers, because Welly chicks are brown and chipmunk striped. Black copper Marans should not get reddish coloring in their chests, male or female, so I doubt that's what they are, either.

Is it me or are ducklings and chicks hard to sell this year? I have never had this issue!

I have sold a few chicks but only when the people think they are getting something for free. I'm new to the whole hatching chicks so I was hoping for a net of $1 per chick. That might be low. But I did not list the chicks for a $1 instead I listed them for $2 and offered discounts for buying more than one. Then I offered even more of a discount for buying the rest of the chicks in the brooder once it was close to the number requested. Currently I'm even raising the chicks an extra week for free. So far I have netted at least a $1 per chick.

JC penny tried fair pricing and went back to sales and coupons and combos of sales and coupons. As a person who uses coupons I know people want deals. Also it helps that production RIR is very popular locally, maybe not on this site but around here they are loved. They are leaving my house in before they reach 2 weeks which is when I was thinking I would have to either raise the price.

On day 19, all mine are in lockdown, so not sure. However day 18, you should pretty much only see a dark mass filling up the majority of the egg. Typically you can see movement.

If your sure the eggs are duds, the. I'd pull them. If your not sure, leave them in

Rest in Peace ----- Rooster Cogburn 2012 - 6/4/2013

Please remove your hats and bow your heads for a moment of silence in remembrance of Rooster Cogburn. He was a valiant and intrepid member of the neighborhood, loved and respected by (almost) all.

He met his demise by being viciously attacked and murdered by a pack of coyotes during the night while he slept on his usual roost in the barn. When his owner went out to the barn and found red feathers scattered around near Cogburn's roost he then took the ATV out into the field and found a bunch more feathers and one foot.

D*mn! He was an ornery old cuss, but I liked him. Shirley, 4 houses down will be heart-broken. She had adopted him, fed him so much that he never ate anything here.

I bought 2 more live traps and have set them up in the barn with a chunk of chicken meat under the trip pads. If I catch some, I'll let you know. They will be given a fair and impartial trial before being found guilty and sentenced to death. I intend to give them pistols with one bullet and let them do the honorable thing, the murdering b*stards.

John

I'm so sorry to hear this! He was a beautiful rooster and will be well missed by many, it sounds.
