INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

How long does a henstay broody???? And can I put baby chickens with her to make her not so broody??? Big Mama is being broody and has been for maybe a month sitting and cracking eggs cuz she's so fat she's so broody she wont get off her nest to eat when I pick her up to go eat she sits on the ground and pecks at the ground then I have to nudge her to go eat any ideas to get her not broody anymore? And what makes a hen broody??

cute pics pipd!

Okay believe it or not but I miscounted my chicks lol. There are 10 not 9.

But one hasnt acted quite right since it hatched. It dosent want to walk aroung just lays there with its eyes closed. When I stuck its beak in the water it opened its eyes and took a drink. It seems perfectly healthy just wants to lay there and not move.It dosent have curled toes or splayed legsor anything.

And now I think I have thought about it too much and can't tell the blue and splash ameraucanas apart.Even though before I thought I didnt have any splash now I am questioning that.I guess I will just wait until they get some actual feathers to tell.I know what both look like but for some reaason I am having a hard time, my eyes are confused lol.

They all look small too.Like they are bantams, I have only ever hatched ameraucanas one other time and only one hatched so I didnt reallly have anything to compare it to.I usually but them when they are older.

Here are some pics

A broody hen either has to be made to stop being broody or to hatch eggs. Some hens won't leave a nest to eat and risk starving so it is good that you are making sure she is eating. A broody hen will not lay anymore eggs.
There are several ways to make a hen not go broody. Here is a link or two for more information:

Depending on what you want from your hens, a broody hen could be a great thing. I'm trying to hatch chicks now that are known to go broody. Not so I can raise more of them but so I can give them other eggs to hatch. I'm thinking it has to be less stressful to have the hen do all the hatching work instead of me monitoring the incubator.

That's why all my chickens are named "Chicken". It saves confusion. My dog Millie has been called "Dog" so many times that when the word gets used in normal conversation, she perks up her ears.

Grabbed a quick photo of the run at lunch. We've dug out a foot deep trench to bury the 1/2" hardware cloth. The run will be completely enclosed and the chickens will be able to go under the coop for shade when confined. I'm planning on painting the door as well, just haven't gotten there yet.

Bury the cloth at least 20 inches out horizontally also. Or, we buried ours down about 4 inches, and 20 inches out horizontally. Much easier than digging down to bury it vertically in this concrete, er, clay soil we have. Coops looking great!

Quinstar- the coup looks great!!!

Peabirdhaven- omg!!!! That's hilarious!!!

Pip- I think you have a new calling- chicken photography !!!!

Old salt- so how is Millie doing??

So some good news/bad news. First the good. We got our first egg today, should be from a leghorn.

This girl could be the layer. Also, her boyfriend has started some crowing.

My son told me today that he has some bad news. He said this rooster was standing on one of the leghorns, trying to swallow her head from behind. He said he chased him off and scolded the rooster. I guess boys will be boys at any age!

The way I read it it's only an issue if you are selling the bird, but I'm no lawyer.
