INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

It would be a long shot, but depending upon how much time you want to spend trying, here is what happened with a peachick that I hatched a few years ago.

This is how Trooper hatched.

These are the "shoes" I built from pipe cleaners.

After about 3 days. Of course, I had to keep putting them back on every time he picked them off.

Trooper now
Wow he is so pretty. That is awesome that you put that much time into helping him and he ended up living. It looks like he was born without toes.My chick has toes, its legs are screwed up.I am willing to put a lot of time and care into it I just dont know how to fix it.And I just dont know if i could cull it.I dont want it to suffer but I dont want to give up on it either.

He had toes; his feet were just badly deformed. His toes aren't perfectly straight today, but they do the job! I named him Trooper because he was such a little trooper through all that. Now I tell people to watch their fingers around him, because if he sees fingers, he assumes treats are there too--doesn't hurt, but startles folks.

Racinchickins, that sounds like a great day! Thank you for such a gracious offer.

O i thought he didnt have toes. His name fits him perfectly.I posted on the emergiences diseases thread or whatever it is called to see if anyone else has helpful input.

Boy do I have catching up to do! I've had a very eventful week! Been working on the coop all week, and it finally has four walls and a roof of sorts! We've still gotta get the permanent roof on, and paint it, and then do the work to make it "pretty" but at least the chickies have a place to sleep. Yesterday the chickies got free of their "brooder" pen, and knocked over a lamp and started a fire. Luckily, DH caught it and none of the chickens were hurt. We had to put them in the garage while we got the last wall of the coop up, and one of the roosters fell in an oil bucket. I've got the majority of the oil out of his feathers, but he's still a weird color. I hope it doesn't hurt him.

I am still 99% sure that one of my leghorns is a boy. It looks nothing like the other two, but people still insist that the coloration makes it a girl....
Ugh... so glad he caught the fire, thats so frightening! The original Dawn dish soap is safe for use on wildlife during oil spills, so it should be ok for chickens. google it for more info, I used it a lot during my Animal Control years with critters that got into garages etc.

I am not so fond of the DNR that is closest to me.I sent them some emails and they never responded. It has been somewhere between 6-12 months, can't remember exactly.

I call direct and play the voicemail game. Grr I keep calling til i get a person, and let em know I AM NOT HAPPY

Grabbed a quick photo of the run at lunch. We've dug out a foot deep trench to bury the 1/2" hardware cloth. The run will be completely enclosed and the chickens will be able to go under the coop for shade when confined. I'm planning on painting the door as well, just haven't gotten there yet.

Its moving along well, will be an awesome coop!

First of all, hugs to all of you who have lost birds to predators lately. I know how devastating that is.

On a lighter note, a story I gotta tell: My BIL wanted some cappuccino mix in his morning coffee and asked my sis where it was. She answered that it was in a container on the counter. He also adds an unbelievable amount of sugar to his coffee/cappuccino. After he drank it, he complained that it seemed gritty. As it turned out, he had doctored his coffee with two teaspoons of DE that she had for her hens! She told him that at least he doesn't have to worry about worms for a while.

INVITATION!!! It's a CHICKEN PARTY

I've been talking to jchny2000 about her idea for a get-together for the Indiana BYCers. She wasn't able to find a good place to hold it near her house, so I am volunteering to have it at my place.

On Sunday 28 July, my DSO (Significant Other) and I are going to host a meeting of the Central Indiana Poultry Enthusiasts. This is a small club of chicken folk from the general Indy area that meet every other month at the house of one of the members. We admire the hosts chickens and coops, talk endlessly about our birds, and shamelessly steal their best ideas to make our chicks more comfortable (kinda like we do on here!

)

We'd like to invite anyone from the forum here that would like to come and meet other people as crazy about chickens as we are.

Here are some details and Ideas.

The meeting is usually from 3 to 5 or 6ish. Bring a lawn chair and a snack to share. Drinks will be provided. The DSO loves to cook, so there will be some fun things to eat too. There will be a tour of our coop and run setup and a meet and greet with our chickens and turkeys. We call it a meeting, but it really is just a chance to socialize with other chicken folk.

One of the things that was talked about was a workshop on processing poultry. I am blessed/cursed with an overabundance of boys at the current time. So I would like to propose that anyone interested in this portion of chickendom can show up around 11, and we can put on the workshop then. If you have a bird that needs to have that 'One Bad Day', go ahead and bring it. I can promise to have at least one bird for demo purposes and will probably have more than that if one or two people want to try their hand at it. For those that are not interested in this, we promise to be done and all cleaned up before 3.

Another idea is that if you know someone else who is coming and would like to arrange to swap/sell/transfer birds, that is fine by me. I have a large garage that has never seen my chickens, so I can offer it up as a place to keep birds being swapped so that they can be out of the sun and not kept in a car. Please make your arrangements ahead of time, and only bring birds that are already spoken for.

Our farm is located just east of Mooresville, IN. Which is located just SW of Indy not too far from the airport.

I'm just paranoid enough about things to not want to post my address and phone number on the forum where it is available to anyone and everyone, so what I would like to propose is that if you are interested in coming, please send me a PM, and I'll put together an email to send out to the participants with all the pertinent details.

If you have any questions, or suggestions, send me a note.

Hope you can make it!

My spell checker here promises that if you come, he will be more than happy to entertain you with his cuteness. (Don't tell him that he will be at that awkward age by then....)
haha You're a natural at advertising by picturing an adorable baby chick along with your invitation! Your spell checker certainly is a compelling reason to come! Thank you so much for hosting the get-together and thanks to jchny for working so hard to try to get everyone together. I am planning on coming after the "educational event." I actually have plans to be in Louisville that weekend, but I think we're taking two cars, so I can take one to go to Indy from Lville. I can stay at my daughter's house in downtown Indy. I'll try to get my DH to come, but he might not want to take Monday off. You can tell that I am thinking up this plan as I type! haha I'll PM you~ I don't blame you for being cautious about posting your phone, etc.

I just pulled the trigger and ordered chicks from Cackle Hatchery in MO. I'm getting ten pullets - five Black Australorps and five Easter Eggers. *gulp* I'm limited to six hens since I live in the city, so my cousin is taking the extra four when they are ready.

House Kat~ FUN! Congrats on ordering your new chicks!! I'm only about 20 mins. away from you if you ever need anything.

Sounds like a date. I may be able to offer up a few chickens for practice. I would love to have a hands on workshop happening. I guess don't forget a cooler and ice to put them in afterwards huh. I can offer to make food too. I am not a great cook but I have no issues forcing people to try English food :D Thank you so much Jchnny for getting the ball rolling on this one. It was a great idea and I am glad we can still do it. Thank you Racin and DSO for offering to host. It is appreciated by all! Will be shooting you a PM soon.
