INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

How do I get rid of lice in chickens I checked them just a few mins ago and Mr frizz has lice idk how cuz I gave him a bath using cat flea and tick shampoo will I get rid of it before the 20th he's my show chicken I news help what do I do!??!?!??!??!??!??!??!?

With all the chickens in the coop, dust the whole thing, coop floor, roost, and chickens liberally with Sevin dust or equivalent. It contains Diazinon. It is for use in the garden. I have used it often on dogs, cats, and chickens. If you only have a few chickens, you can catch the chicken and hold it's feet while you dip your free hand in the dust and smear the dust clinging to your hand on the chicken. Don't be afraid to use enough to thoroughly coat the chicken with the dust. When you turn it loose, do so from a height of 4 ft or so and the bird will flap off any excess. The next day, there will be no live lice. You can also put it in their dust bath area, if you have one. Be sure to sprinkle Sevin in any area the chickens have used. This will kill off potential re-infestation.

You can try the various "natural" cures, but this stuff works quickly. If I was a chicken with lice, I wouldn't want to wait around to get rid of them.

First of all, I want to say Happy Fourth to everyone! I hope everyone has a safe holiday with no firework injuries!!

I am half tempted to break one open and see what it looks like inside. I knew something was different with my girls because I could tell something was different in their voices!!!
just wondering...since this is the first eggs, when is it safe to start eating them???

Awesome, good for you!!!! They sure do need reported! Please don't ever feel like you can't say anything on here. We have the right to discuss anything that is "child safe" and family oriented... cock and pit bull fighting are both horrid practices. I cannot understand how anyone takes pleasure of watching one animal kill another for sport! The Pits live and die a horrible life, I have seen it firsthand. Breeding practices of the breed have leaned towards aggressive in the US, and the dog was bred originally for livestock handling.. and guarding. Please, everyone be very aware of the dog if you own one. I love dogs, guys, large breed, My favorite by far are Old English mastiff, rotties and shepards. but this one concerns me a lot.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pit_bull and many first hand reports.. I was in animal control for 5 years. its a very sensitive subject.
I will not state my personal opinions, but there is a horrific amount of bite/attack cases from the breed. I have met a few family oriented dogs that were raised properly and did well.
I have also been faced with a small child mauled by one, and one case an adult owner. I will say the majority of bite calls I went on were pits and some owners were even killed by their "pets".
Its past description when you go to a home and see that, more than once! Anyone choosing the breed needs to be aware of the risk involved. Most homeowner insurance policies charge a large fee for having them. If you don't tell them, they won't pay damages and it just snowballs. There are good rescues out there that spend a lot of time testing the dogs temperament.. It really concerns me anytime the breed is discussed. and yes, I have had one, as a resident shelter dog. Nero went to a reputable rescue after he was neutered and passed our shelter tests, also lived at my house several months until I found a place I felt safe to put him. I don't want to offend or insult anyone but please be aware.

You are in my prayers, so is your dad. I am so sorry things aren't going too good right now, be strong and look ahead!
Did you look up WebMD, it has a lot of info on it.

How did Mr Frizz do with the bath? usually they wind up liking it before its over.

I'm working on being a vegetarian -but still eat drink dairy and eat egg products- so just for eggs
that makes a difference! but there are so many, meyer hatchery has a good selection to look at. then you can pick, and find a breeder.
Hatchery birds are ok, but usually are not as hardy as farm raised, and tend to be less friendly.

oh no.. sevin dust is good, the garden 5% variety. it has to be all the way to the skin to work. use a pan, the size of like kitty litter pan, and add dry dirt, mix in a cup of of it to a cup of dirt. let him dust bathe. Or you can hold him by his feet upside down, and shake the dust right on him. its messy, do it in a garage or outside.
I use it on any new birds as a safety measure before i put them in quarantine. Repeat every 10 days til gone.

Well add me to list of losing chickens!!! I lost a baby silkie last week then 2 polish a couple of days later- same batch! And I have another polish who has been up and down for a week. Who knows if he'll make it! They are all 6 -7 weeks. A Banty Cochin and another silkie are with this same batch and are acting fine! I've had a Mille roo that's been sick for weeks, I've given him everything under the sun! Yesterday I didn't think he'd make it thru the night and today he seems better. It's like he can't get enough food or water. I had a buddy with him and finally took him out because he seemed to be walking all over the sick one. Then tonight I go out to lock up everybody and my silver seabrite was down!! I syringed some tetracycline and electrolytes but it doesn't look good!! Boy this chicken stuff is HARD!!!!
ugh, i am so sorry!

I have seen it, many others too. I think its all the rain, humidity and temps are up and down. their bodies are having trouble balancing and the weaker immune systems birds can't take it.

I don't have an answer for that.. the steam may work? Not sure if the cat treatment is safe for them. No pest strips I have also read will work, but I am really nervous about using chemicals that may not be safe for chickens. Try searching this site, and google it before you do. The chicken lice is different then what humans can get from what I have read, but they will crawl on you. I would sure use an insect repellent to protect yourself.

sorry about the double posting.....but as I was typing that first message about our first eggs, i heard the sound of the "i gotta lay an egg" song. So i hurried up and finished my post, scrambled to put my boots and went out to the coop.....to my delight there was yet another egg!!! so 3 now in total!!! this is so cool now...it's almost like a game of "find the egg!" i would like to say thank you to who ever posted the video of her hen doing the "i gotta lay an egg" song song... because of that video, i was able to distinguish between normal sounds and egg laying sounds!! this is so cool i love this!!!
Yes the egg-laying song! It's pretty funny, and cool. I've heard ours a couple times now, but since they lay in the AM after I get to work, I haven't heard it much as we've just started getting eggs. Maybe tomorrow!

I don't
will steaming the coop kill them??
I don't know but it seems high temps would kill about everything. Sounds like you aren't wanting to use a bunch of chemicals either. I would bath the bird again, you could steam the coop if you have the means to do so, and add the DE. The DE worked great for me. You could also check in the other emergency forums and see if you can find any answers. If you are desperate and need immediate results I know tractor supply sells poultry dust with permethrin that I hear works well.
