INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Well add me to list of losing chickens!!! I lost a baby silkie last week then 2 polish a couple of days later- same batch! And I have another polish who has been up and down for a week. Who knows if he'll make it! They are all 6 -7 weeks. A Banty Cochin and another silkie are with this same batch and are acting fine! I've had a Mille roo that's been sick for weeks, I've given him everything under the sun! Yesterday I didn't think he'd make it thru the night and today he seems better. It's like he can't get enough food or water. I had a buddy with him and finally took him out because he seemed to be walking all over the sick one. Then tonight I go out to lock up everybody and my silver seabrite was down!! I syringed some tetracycline and electrolytes but it doesn't look good!! Boy this chicken stuff is HARD!!!!

You know I had my first chickens ten years ago. I had kids and built a house so quit the chicken business until about three years ago. I've never had sickness until this year. It's been rough! Keep the sick ones quarantined to prevent it from spreading. I know that's not always easy. I hope it gets better. So stressful. I posted my chickens symptoms in the emergency forum
and got some good advice.

My mom's best friend died a few years a go from Shingles. It can get very serious very fast.
O. I new that it could be very painful, but I had no idea it was that serious. And since we are on the topic of shingles, I know a guy that got shingles when he was 10 or 11.I always thought older people got it, but apparently younger people can get it too.

They ignored it at first, but then once one of them started pecking at it the others started trying to snatch the bits of it out her beak! They eventually all got the idea and they love it. I have them in two brooders now, so I move it back and forth between the two so everyone can get some.
Cool. I might just get one.

well mine didn't have live they had mites. I gave my roo a bath and treated their coop several times with poultry protector. It didn't work at least not for long. I didn't want to use something like sevin of I could help it. My friend told me to dust the coop and run with diatamaceous earth and add it to their dust baths. They were completely gone in a week or at least best that I can tell.

I was wondering what chicken breeds would be good for a beginner -I'm starting a hobby farm next spring- I'm starting the research now.
I'm working on being a vegetarian -but still eat drink dairy and eat egg products- so just for eggs
I like a mix of breeds, and I agree that an Easter Egger is a good choice for many reasons including the large beautiful blue-green eggs. Some of us on this thread have chickens for pets and eggs. Others on the thread have chickens for eggs and for eating. I'd say that we all enjoy having the opportunity to eat more healthfully. Additionally, we don't support inhumane factory chicken and egg production.

I think it is terrible that people do that kind of stuff. What would ever make you think it would be funny to watch animals fight sometimes even until one died? I love animals in general not just chickens, and If I see an animal being abused, neglected, etc I call the cops or animal shelter. But I never call Blufftons animal shelter, because they dont give animals very long to be adopted before they put them down and they only give pits I think 7 days, which is a bunch of crap! I call no kill animal shelters.
I can't imagine anyone on this thread thinking you were a jerk for reporting a cock fighting farm. Besides the fact that it is illegal in the U.S., it is a horribly cruel and must be reported. You are a hero for having the guts to take action.
Backyard Bitten~ Enjoy fresh eggs! Their rich golden yolks are amazing.
Sorry to hear of all the chicken illnesses and deaths. I bet that excessive rain and humidity has caused a lot of health-related issues.

animal lover~ Here's some info about lice from the Chicken Health book that the owner of BYC co-wrote: (don't forget you can click on the images to see them larger)

I'm gonna be feeding them orignic feed I'm also doing the same with the rest of my hobby farm orignic everything. I won't be doing anything inhumane I don't believe in that -I love animals so much I couldn't think of doing anything inhumane to them-
