INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Hi everyone! I have been MIA for the last couple weeks. I got a call for an interview for a dream job-- finally and with preliminary training course on top of catching up on grad school homework and going back to work after my illness proved to be too much to handle.

Its taken me a little while last night and the rest of tonight to get through 2 weeks of posts but I did it! I finally have pictures again of everyone but 1 because I apparently lost count. That will be forthcoming on the my next post. Then off to bed cause I'm zonked.
I watched a couple You-tube videos where they said rooster heads are a delicacy in certain cultures (so are chicken legs-- the ones with the talongs) so this might where he was coming from ??

LOVE this!!!

reminds me of the tom turkey that tried to hump my husband in April-- he certainly liked him because he was displaying and doing some dances for him...too funny :)

Wow, I hope that the hawks don't hear the gossip that there are chickens around or this might be happening to me someday

This is not funny but I love the stories you tell!

awesome!

This is what I can't wait to do in our backyard for my flock :)
My DH almost crapped his pants when I told him how much you spent on the chickens :)
So sorry to hear about this :(
Well you can tell your hubby that I only spent half that. My wife spent the other half lol. Anyway, it now seems almost worth that money since we are now getting 2 eggs a day, and they are so much fun to have around. Not to mention there are no vet bills like a dog has.

First of all, I want to say Happy Fourth to everyone! I hope everyone has a safe holiday with no firework injuries!!

Second, I am way behind on posts....have had a stressful week and it's not easy trying to take classes, work and raise a 2 1/2 yr old as well. but any hoo

So here it goes....WE HAVE EGGS!!!!! (you u tell i am a total newb???) I am so eggcited because i got the best fourth of july present ever........went out to the coop this morning and found two little perfect white eggs!!!!!!!! YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! my girls are exactly 18 weeks old this week, what a nice surprise. As someone mentioned on here before, if there was a way to cast one of those in gold, i totally would!! I am half tempted to break one open and see what it looks like inside. I knew something was different with my girls because I could tell something was different in their voices!!!
just wondering...since this is the first eggs, when is it safe to start eating them???

ok I am rambling, but I am just so eggcited for these first eggs!!!! Happy Fourth everyone!!!!

my sister thought she would be funny and asked me how i got them to lay a quarter and i said that i just fed them nickels & dimes...lol just a little humor
Yes very eggciting, eh? This is our first time with eggs also. I had the most deicious egg sandwhich this morning, so fresh it's unbelievable.

Can everyone pray that my dad doesn't go blind in one eye he has shingles from his head to his eyebrow and its creeping down to his eye he's a butcher so I cant have him go blind in one eye he's taking meds for the shingles and in a couple of days he goes back to the doctors to see if its in his nerve so please pray he doesn't .....had 1 pullet dye yesterday and 2 cockerels dye today
on the good side I gave Mr. Frizz a bath to get poop off his feet and but he looks cute now :)

I hope you reported him! That is reprehensible.
I did I just didnt say that in my response, because I figured someone would think I am a jerk or something.Guess who doesnt have a cock fighting farm anymone lol. I think it is terrible that people do that kind of stuff. What would ever make you think it would be funny to watch animals fight sometimes even until one died? I love animals in general not just chickens, and If I see an animal being abused, neglected, etc I call the cops or animal shelter. But I never call Blufftons animal shelter, because they dont give animals very long to be adoted before they put them down and they only give pits I think 7 days, which is a bunch of crap! I call no kill animal shelters.

Hehe, Sugar and Bo will both use me as a lean post to get the yummy stuff! And Bo, he still does the kid dance, I love to watch them. Sugar acts like a deer, she will stand on one back hoof to try to get to the yummiest stuff! They really love maple, cherry and apple trees too. Oh, and a big bonus, they will strip a hawthorn. locust etc.down past the bark, they love those trees. Over the years having goats, I only have 3 of those awful trees left on the whole 5 acres. My dad got one of the spikes in his foot last year had a horrible time getting it out and finally made him go to the Dr. They are just a nuisance, those things are awful. Briar patches, wow, they think that's good stuff and blackberry bushes too!
Ha! Ya Morocco Tryed to use me as a lean post too, but I had to go to town and had just gotten read so I didnt let him put his hooves on me. The other goats will eat leaves sometimes but dont really care what they are eating lol. Morocco loves leaves, it is his favorite treat.Has been since he was a baby. Goats have such funny personaltites.

My biggest problem was the foxes. We have yet to get them, but the pens are a lot more secure. I am looking for Aussie pups, decided that will be the LGD breed am going with. Small, but smart and very devoted. Love the blue Merle color, but any will do.
I have all sorrts of trouble this year. Hawks, coyotes, dogs, and ones that just randomly died. But Now everything is doing good. I have a dog, her name is Chebby. She is a mutt, german sheperd, aussie, lab, pit, and I am not sure what else. She is a great dog and very protective of me and such a sweetheart. Also pretty well behaved, put her through a year of dog obedience when she was 1-2 years old. Now she will sit on command, but she dosent stay. She follows me everwhere I go. Which i would rather her follow me instead of stay. She is okay with chickens. She dosent like rabbits though, she trys to kill them. She would make a great hunting dog, but I dont hunt. I love Merle coloring. In a few years I am going to get a Merle Great Dane.

I was wondering what chicken breeds would be good for a beginner -I'm starting a hobby farm next spring- I'm starting the resreach now
It really just depends what you want chickens for. There are a ton of great breeds. Easter Eggers are great chickens. I always recommend them because they are one of my favorites, so are ameraucanas but those are harder to find. And most of the hatcheries that say they have ameraucanas are really easter eggers.

Sorry about your chickens that died. And I hope your dad gets better and dosent go blind in one of his eyes. I didnt know shingles could make you go blind.
