ok, so what is the difference when incubating duck eggs instead of chicken? I know they incubate for 28 days instead of 21 but is there anything else I should be aware of. I have a duck egg in my incubator with chicken eggs. they hatch on Wednesday and the duck egg isn't due for another 10 days after that. so far I have been treating it the same as a chicken egg. it's got great veining in it, so I no it is progressing. any tips would be appreciated

Theres incubation info there, and if you are doing Muscovy, its 35 days. Misting after 10 days is important. it makes the ducklings develop a lot stronger. think of it as the mother duck taking a swim before returning to her nest. since its in with the chicken eggs, pull it out, mist it on a paper towel and put back.

My Latest Crisis!
My three month old Lavender Orp pullet "Violet" is limping! As I've mentioned before, I still have her and my Jubilee, Adeline, stay in a large dog crate in our walk-out basement at night. I have to keep my coop sterilized to get rid of my BR's leg mites. Last night when the Orps walked in the basement door and to their crate, I heard a little crash (sound of dog crate metal) and looked, but everything looked okay. I'm thinking that maybe Violet hit her leg on the bottom lip of the dog crate when she got in. That's what I am hoping is the cause and not some terrible disease! When I saw her limp outside this morning, I carried her to the area where she and Adeline hang out. I gave them some watermelon, but noticed that Violet was panting, so I brought them both back in the basement because it is really hot and humid today.

My daughter and I find it difficult to tell which leg is the bad leg. She can walk a few wobbly steps, but then sits down. When my daughter held her up so I could examine Violet's legs and feet, her right leg toes curled up and her left leg toes were out in the walking position. I didn't see any swelling or marks anywhere. I guess the worst case scenario is Marek's, but I assume the breeder vaccinated the chicks, but I am checking on that.

After reading the latest posts, I am wondering if eating the hen's food has caused any problems. I have the pullets on medicated chick feed because that's what the chicken scratch farms breeders were feeding them. I keep the medicated food in the basement crate so the hens can't eat it. Like others on this thread, I've wondered about the food issue since the hens have chicken food, which I see the pullets occasionally eating. From what I've read, since the pullets are three months old, the chicken food shouldn't be a problem. Any thoughts? They all free range everyday.

For Violet's leg limping, should I give her "poly vi sol no iron" and/or electrolytes and probiotics? My "Chicken Health for Dummies" book said aspirin can be given if there is swelling or sign of infection, but there isn't. Help please! Thank you.

As far as Tweedy, she hasn't seemed broody at all as far as a reason for pulling out feathers between her legs. I haven't checked that area yet today since I've been worrying about Violet.

I would remove any perches, and use old towels if possible, or very thick shavings for bedding the next few days. Sounds more like a sprain. the vitamins/probotics will be helpful too.

I am sooo excited!! I was penning everybody up for the night and heard baby chirping from under my Millie!! I'd about given up hope!!! Ima anxious to see if she can rais ether now or if I'll have to help. Also I'm going to have to put screening around the bottom to keep the free rangers from reaching in to get them when she brings them out!!! My first broody hatch!! Advice????

and here i was thinking all along that is just tasted good with a small after taste of hi-hop lolol

MillerBirds-- Welcome to our forum! I hope you find your EE's that you are looking for and thanks for the tip about the auction!

Browncow-- I think the "soft shell" thing is very common in new egg layers and it will correct itself. Just as Jchny said you want to make sure to have some oyster shell where they can get to it. i bought a little dish that is made for a rabbit hutch. it has a screw on the back with a washer, i just unscrew the washer and it fits in nicely to the hardware cloth on the coop i have. the lid can either slide forwards or backwards to open up to be filled.

Oh best stuff in the world is UNpasturized apple cider vinegar! Good probotics, add it to their water like a tablespoon to a gallon. It also prevents algae growth in duck or geese pools.

No large breeds, My parents are elderly and live with us. Dad thinks he can still play with them, and winds up falling. We have a little pug mix (rescue dog) and plan to get an Aussie soon for the livestock.

LOVE all the new coops, and updates on the babies!

Ok, I will try that, and keep it in mind for future uses. My mom loves pugs, but she dosent own any. I am more of a large dog person myself, but I have owned some great small breeds in the past- pomeranian, chihuahua, and dashhounds.

M2H- Not trying to freak you out, but this is pretty much how SF started out. She was limping one day and it just got worse from there. But We can fix our chickens together! I dont think it is mareks disease though, I thought it was at first. Because one of the symptoms of mareks disease is being paralyzed but mine wasnt and isnt paralyzed just a limp that has increasingly got worse. I hops she gets better. And if she get better please let me know what you did and I will do the same. I got some plain yogurt today and I will let you know If that does anything.

Bradselig- Good luck with your hatch!

Yes, I thought of you since yours had started limping. Is your SF worse today? My Lavender has been eating, drinking, and pooping normally. I gave her and my Jubilee some scrambled eggs with yogurt earlier and they loved it. I am really hoping that she just has a slight sprain. I'm keeping them in a large dog kennel in the basement.
I will keep you posted if there are any changes-- good or bad.

Jchny~ I do put a clean towel in each night for them to sleep on and I have newspaper at the bottom with shavings on top. I am going to go add more shavings, though. That's a good idea.

She is the same. She has been the same the past 3 day, but I have king of slacked off giving her the poly-vis-ol vitamins mostly becasue she fights me taking it and the will peck my hand, I think because it makes her made lol, she will get over it. My SF has been eating a LOT and drinking, her poop is normal too.I hope it is a sprain too. I am really thinking that is what it is. If it is they will just need some time to rest and be pampered. Mine is in my brooder with my chicks. She pretty much stays in the same spot and after a week they still show no interest in her. Ok, I will keep you posted too good or bad or even if she just stays the same. I really hope both of them get better.
