My Latest Crisis!
My three month old Lavender Orp pullet "Violet" is limping! As I've mentioned before, I still have her and my Jubilee, Adeline, stay in a large dog crate in our walk-out basement at night. I have to keep my coop sterilized to get rid of my BR's leg mites. Last night when the Orps walked in the basement door and to their crate, I heard a little crash (sound of dog crate metal) and looked, but everything looked okay. I'm thinking that maybe Violet hit her leg on the bottom lip of the dog crate when she got in. That's what I am hoping is the cause and not some terrible disease! When I saw her limp outside this morning, I carried her to the area where she and Adeline hang out. I gave them some watermelon, but noticed that Violet was panting, so I brought them both back in the basement because it is really hot and humid today.

My daughter and I find it difficult to tell which leg is the bad leg. She can walk a few wobbly steps, but then sits down. When my daughter held her up so I could examine Violet's legs and feet, her right leg toes curled up and her left leg toes were out in the walking position. I didn't see any swelling or marks anywhere. I guess the worst case scenario is Marek's, but I assume the breeder vaccinated the chicks, but I am checking on that.

After reading the latest posts, I am wondering if eating the hen's food has caused any problems. I have the pullets on medicated chick feed because that's what the chicken scratch farms breeders were feeding them. I keep the medicated food in the basement crate so the hens can't eat it. Like others on this thread, I've wondered about the food issue since the hens have chicken food, which I see the pullets occasionally eating. From what I've read, since the pullets are three months old, the chicken food shouldn't be a problem. Any thoughts? They all free range everyday.

For Violet's leg limping, should I give her "poly vi sol no iron" and/or electrolytes and probiotics? My "Chicken Health for Dummies" book said aspirin can be given if there is swelling or sign of infection, but there isn't. Help please! Thank you.

As far as Tweedy, she hasn't seemed broody at all as far as a reason for pulling out feathers between her legs. I haven't checked that area yet today since I've been worrying about Violet.

I'm selling a bantam barred rock rooster, a male Saxony duck, and a female saxony duck. If anyone wants any of them please PM me.

I am also looking for a welsh harlequin female duck and a Cayuga duck if anyone is willing to part with them.

Hi DarthLayer, I sent you a PM. Hope you are out of the rain by now. :)

Wow! When it rains it pours huh.... I'm so sorry you are dealing with another chicken issue. I have no idea what the problem may be, but I really hope you are able to get it sorted out!

It appears as though I may have an extra Sebright roo. They are only nine weeks old. Only one is crowing but my other silver has identical wattles and comb so I think I have two lil boys. Any one interested in sebrights? I'm not positive yet but if they are both boys one will have to go. I only have two girl sebrights so I don't think that will go over so well :/

I can't believe these have not sold on CL. Have you tried listing them with only 1 breed in a CL post? I have noticed that some people don't want to read the entire ad. Maybe they are missing what they want to buy. Also TSC sometimes has a swap in Franklin. I know it is not close to you but maybe your TSC has a swap too.

For feed. Does anyone know of a good place to buy feed with animal protein in it. IMO the TSC we go to has grain mites and has had them for weeks. They still have the same bags with bugs that were there 6 weeks a go and now the bugs are spreading imo.
We were able to pick up some dumar layer and some medicated feed from a different TSC but I don't really want layer.

Thanks, I can't believe they haven't sold either! Lol. I'm waiting to hear back from my brothers friend regarding the orp and orp mixes. I thought they were sold before they hatched, but he seems to be not interested now. I haven't tried listing individually due to plan old laziness lol. Maybe ill try that.
If anyone on here are interested in make you even a better deal if you took all.

As for feed I have no idea but curious as well. Most of the older birds are free ranging, but during winter I'd really love to find a fee based on animal protein not plant based.

ok, so what is the difference when incubating duck eggs instead of chicken? I know they incubate for 28 days instead of 21 but is there anything else I should be aware of. I have a duck egg in my incubator with chicken eggs. they hatch on Wednesday and the duck egg isn't due for another 10 days after that. so far I have been treating it the same as a chicken egg. it's got great veining in it, so I no it is progressing. any tips would be appreciated
