INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Irtehun- I sure hope it does cool down!! Too many things to do and feel bad for the critters!! I've been spraying cold water around the pens and on the roofs every couple of hours when I can. Even the free rangers aren't happy with the heat!

Old salt- so glad he is starting to use it. Has he talked yet? My neighbors does early in the morning. Sort of an eerie screech!

Nothing above a barely audible peep that I've heard. Of course, he's in the garage, so I wouldn't likely hear anything short of a peacock screech from the inside. He's so beat up that I would think that any such effort would probably hurt him. He did do some squawking when I caught him to check over his leg.

When he was with us, he chirped alot when other birds were around. He even would chirp at me if I stayed with him long enough. I always thought he was sweet.

Lost 2 chicks today due to the heat.

So sorry to hear about your chicken loss

I am on pins and needles everyday hoping that it cools down soon

I am not an extreme weather person and if i'm sweating, I can't imagine what it's like to have feathers or fur for that matter! Trying to keep the ladies cool and dogs never stay outside for more than five minutes, just long enough to do the essentials.

Keep giving the girls electrolytes. So it turns out that last week I was just wishing that my Big Red was laying. She actually laid her first brown egg yesterday!!(in this heat-of all crazy things!)
Now that all 3 ladies have started laying, my mind keeps wanting to focus on next spring, which breeds are at the top of my list and all the chicken math involved!

Well hope everyone has a good Thursday and hope no one else had anymore losses.

After spending the entire day cleaning up the yard, mowing, and putting tools away, I've decided that the coop is in the luckiest shade spot in the yard. I kept taking breaks to hang out with them because it was so much cooler there.

Here are Lightening McQueen and Eliza. Lightening is the one that bit me this morning...little bugger. If anyone tries telling me that Eliza is also a cockerel instead of a pullet, I'm going to lose what's left of my feeble mind.

Honestly, it looks like both have saddle feathers. :(

Quote: Ohhh, guys you gotta try fermented feed, you will be surprised at how healthy it makes your birds. nearly every animal I have here gets fermented food, except the goats and quail... And trust me there's a lot of birds here...

Its only few minutes a day and cuts my feed by nearly a 3rd. Lots of other great benefits too, better absorbtion of proteins and nutrients, Poo smell is less obnoxious. less food waste. I could go on for an hour, its really good for them.

For everyone who has expressed an interest in the doings of "Weed Wacker" Jimmy.

He is now putting a little weight on his bad leg. He actually limps with it instead of just hopping on the good one.

The bad news: my wife caught me rinsing out his food & water bowl in the swimming pool.
I am in her bad graces and will have to tread carefully for the next few days. I hate disappointing her by getting caught.

It has been so hot that I have spent 3 days trying to build a 7-hole nest box. Work 15 or 20 minutes. Go inside and rest for an hour or so.
Maybe tomorrow.

Quote: I am so sorry to hear it. I lost 2 - 4 week old BR turkey poults from heat today.

Just heartbroken, they were very sweet lil babies too. I am moving my brood box back into the attached garage so they stay cooler. My last poult is peeping pitifully, so he has his own box in the den with me and a few guineas. The RP poults are almost chicken sized and too big for him to be in with yet.

how old are they? My BR, Mabel has a lot of waddle and comb too. Forgive the poor quality pic, this is while she was still in quarantine.
I got her as a "give up" at about 5-6 months old last summer.
