INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Oh yeah, I know. I did turn around and pet and sweet talk them. Mr. Peeps started growling at me, so I had to back off. If I had a way out I would have put him in his place, but I couldn't move very well in a 4x4 coop. I had a flash of him jumping off the roost at my face and not being able to get away.

I've had those days....Usually it my favorite girl that doesn't want me to leave the coop so she flys to my back and clings on! freaks me out every time and then I have to get her off so I can hold her!

Do we have a list going that lists the different coops for buying feed and grains? Looking at buying more feed soon and I always love a good deal.

I am trying to put one together. I have 2-3 i want to check out locally and leahs mom has shared info on one also. Hope to work on it this week. Tax time is here and I still do returns for a few former clients. Been a super busy week!
Last year of it for me though, UGH.. You have to re-certify every year with a 40 hour class to be a paid preparer

It just isn't worth the hassle for me, i only do about a half dozen every year so I am officially tearing the sign off after April 15th!

Guess who got stuck in the coop this evening.... yeah, me. The door shut behind me and the latch closed. We had a wire rigged to the inside to pull the latch up, but it must have gotten stuck on some chicken wire or a peice of wood. I messed with it for about 15 min with my fingers through the door frame until it popped open. I usually have my phone with me when I go out, but didn't grab it. You would also think after a while my husband would come looking for me. No, all he said was " but, you really like your chickens, and I thought you were just spending time with them." I don't know how long he would have waited. Probably until one of the kids asked where I was.
Anyway, Houdini lives yet another day.
OMgosh that would be me. I am out there a lot! even now that the first babies are all grown I still hang out with my birds. My favorite goose WeeWee is the "sitter" on the eggs, and she still lets me pet her while she is nested on them!

I just love her. She still peeps sometimes, even tho she is almost a year old now. She really wants to hatch them but they are still freezing up. My pigs are really enjoying them in their food, if they crack, i cook them up for the pigs. I am hoping to have my berkshire and my new hereford pigs by friday! Can't wait

I checked on my husband once. The coop door was shut and I thought maybe he was having trouble. Turns out he was watching the tiny chicks. Now that the chicks are bigger, and in the coop most of the day, we don't go into the coop if we don't have too. We can reach the food and water from the front (person) door and the nesting boxes open to the outside.
we have a bar latch on the inside and a second one on the outside of our person door. so if only one person is is the run and that person gets in the coop they can shut the door behind them and not get trapped. However if there are two people in the run it would be really easy to lock the first person in the coop.

We got our hatchery chicks all numbered tonight with leg bands. Now if I see one of them crowing I can tell which one needs to go to the crockpot. After all since they are 20 weeks they should start crowing or laying soon. The only thing is the processing. I really need to find someone to show me in person how to do it. I can live without the skin so the feathers would not be getting plucked but the rest of the processing, no matter how many videos I watch I just don't think I can do it.
We will find you a hands-on teacher yet sally! I just ordered my turkeys, and will order the meat birds next. When i set my butcher date, i can let you know, you are welcome to come. Hoping to have a whizbang plucker built by then too.

Sally, I thought about climbing through the pop door to the run, but I wouldn't fit. I also didn't want to break the people door we just put on. I was willing to wait it out.
I'm with you on the processing, I feel comfortable doing it, but would like to see tricks or fast ways to get it done.

Oh crafty, same goes for you! I am no expert either but i can get one done pretty fast. We do a big family get together and make a day of it. The hardest part for me is initially doing the deed. My brother is "bad guy with the knife" since he has no attachment to the birds. Its silly but it goes fast when several people pitch in and help

I thought about just buying a old cheap washing machine and making it my chicken plucker.
