I'm sitting here typing with one hand. holding a baby polish in the other hand and my Maine coon cat on my lap. The poor chick hatched 3 days ago with its head tilted backward so it can't balance itself. I expected it to die right away so just tried to make it comfortable. It was still going strong yesterday, so I tried making neck brace. That was failure. Today I made gruel with chick starter and am feeding with a syringe. I hope I'm doing the right thing--most breeders tell me that defective chicks should be put down, but I consider all life sacred. If a chicken is suffering, that's another story, but this little thing is so active that I want to give it a chance.
I am sorry to hear about your sick baby. I happened to notice the words Maine Coon cat, and I knew that it would be a gentle, cozy nurse cat for your chick. I love Maine Coons! Years ago, we had a retired Maine Coon show cat from St. Louis named Socrates (I've attached his photo that the former owner still has posted online). My sister has a retired Maine Coon mother cat who is 18. My daughter in Indy has one that isn't purebred, but is obviously mostly MC. They are the most wonderful cats. I am attaching a photo of an amazing one that I just saw a couple of weeks ago at a cat show at the Evansville Vanderburgh Co. 4-H center. This cat was from New York City. This photo looks very weird because I cropped the owner's face out so you could see the size of the ear tufts! He was huge and magnificent, and they are the sweetest cats. My apologies to this thread for getting off topic.

Just made a egg turner. It will be an automatic egg turner but dont have the motor yet so I will just move it manually. Even manually it will sure be easier to turn the eggs then just turning each egg its self. Plus it will save time so the lid isn't open for so long. Here is a pic of it so far.

Looks Great!!

Some slighty off topic news.. One of my wee chicks passed away today. Not sure what happened, he seemed fine yesterday, today, not looking so good. I shake my fist at myself for being sooo excited at the new tsc chicks... Should have waited.. darn me.

So perhaps all this brooder talk might be an option for us sometime. We talked about getting one and just hatching some ourselves... This way we know from day one, what is happening.
Nothing off topic here its the state thread

I am so sorry to hear of your loss

don't blame yourself, you just don't know what could have caused it.

Thank you all for the wonderful words. The others are doing great.
Really excited for your pipping chicks jchny!
Think I would be a nervous wreck hatching my own, wanting to help them out their shells. Constantly checking temps and humidity. As for lock down... Well... Lots of caffeine so I did not need to sleep so I could watch the whole time. :D

Vickichicki- so sorry you lost one.

I showed my DH the pic of Cluckacres egg turner- he asked what it was and when I would start doing that? I think he has given in!!!

Lost my two Pekin ducks last night.. the hen and drake.. I'm so sad/mad this morning. Only one puncture site noted to the back no torn feathers or any other damage. It must have happened some time early this AM :( thinking I'm going to leave my farm dog out at night now. Thinking possibly racoon as I have my property double fenced so if a dog got in it wouldn't get out.

I know when I hatched these guys I said they're just ducks not going to get emotional as I know nature happens.. well I was bawling my eyes out when I found them.. Needless to say whether the last duck my Rouen hen likes it or not she's getting penned at night.

So Sorry. Hopefully it will make it.

Question. Will it hurt to add 2 more eggs to the bator even though I set the rest of my eggs lastnight? I'm asking because my Colombian hen laid one this morning and was still sitting on it when I let them out of the coop. I want to put it in with the others, I know hers are fertile, she is one of my roos favorites. I have seen her breeding. Can someone please tell me if this will hurt or if its ok to add them now.
