We find that these types of things always seem to happen on Sundays when all that's available is the emergency vet clinic! It's a joke around here to keep a close eye on the animals on Sunday afternoons so we can avoid paying $200 just to walk through the clinic doors.

just think how many chicks you will have by the end of the year if you keep that incubator working non stop. btw we are up to 25 now. hopefully we will be in the new house in a week or so.

My girls are starting to pick up with their laying. I have 6 more silkie eggs sitting on the counter and my ameracauna has laid 2 more but I put hers in the fridge. I can't tell if the ones from her in the bator are fertile or not. I was hoping that a few were but I think the boys are afraid of her because she is bigger than them. If I don't get any from her this time, I'll try again.
Let me know when you have a few extra splash or paint eggs you want to part with or a few from your showgirl, I haven't seen Blue breeding yet. I really need to get them in their own pens pretty soon. My eggs are mixed colors. I was trying to find a few more grey or Colombia hens but I'm not having any luck. I can't wait to see what tour new silkies from Judy look like.

the look dirty at this moment. but we will be able to move in to our new home later this week. the first thing we will be doing is bathing all the critters. 7 dogs and 24 chickens. all filthy. man that is going to be a long day/days.

I got moldy feed at orchelien in corydon indiana. Hubby had been feeding them cause I was working,  today after supper I grabbed the feed pail and went to scoop some feed and it had large corn cob sized and smaller chunks of hard moldy feed. I screamed and ran out to the coop and dumped their feed out into a bucket and sure enough the large chunks were in the feeder....
i need help knowing what to look for..signs the girls are ill or how long I have to keep a eye out..when will I know the danger is past.

 I'm hoping my fellow Hoosiers can help me find the info I have been searching here my i can't figure out the search engine here. The threads that pop up don't match my search quest. 

Im so upset and appreciate any help advice or knowledge you can pass on to me on this subject. 

that's where we buy our feed. what brand and type of feed did you have the issue with. we haven't had any issues with feed at this point luckily.

Brad - Those chicks are looking good. I had one with a bent toe. wrapped it up and it was good the next day. Weird.

Momma - I personally am not sure if I could harm an animal snooping around my yard. However I do live in the city so the chances of this happening is not likely. I have also never had to defend my flock from anything either. We do have an awful lot of stray dogs in my area though, and not having a fence in my yard makes my coops more accessible which is scary.
My neighbour has a new dog which they let outside, unchained, left unoccupied for quite a long time. Just waiting for the day he gets big enough and inquisitive enough to venture in my yard. I already have to check before I let my dogs (who are chained, and observed) out to use the bathroom.
If the situation arose I would probably pick my chickens and dogs over someone elses dog or critter.

Too fast - Coop is looking good. Be ready for some chickens in no time.

Jchny - I too am dealing with pasty butts with all the chicks I got from tsc. Do not remember it being this bad with my girls. The ones that are over a week old are looking better though. New chicks, well.... Think they hate me when they hear the water running as they know what is coming up.

I did notice while giving my new chicks a closer exam, the silkie has 6 toes on one foot... The back toe is fused with another toe, two nails on there and everything.

She also made feed bags into *ahem undergarments. Pretty sure we wouldn't want those either!

Thanks vickichicki about the coop encouragement. We don't really know how we are going to cut the door holes, or the pop door holes, or the slide out to clean out under the roost. But everything I've read said to be sure the cleaning part is easy, or it won't get done often enough.

And about the creature problem, well, we've had deer, racoon, snakes, hawks, oppossums, coyotes and probably other things living/wandering thru our backyard, so I'd be surprised if you didn't have most of them in the very near area around you. I am going to make the coop as predator proof as I can. I will pick my flock over other creatures in my back yard also, but all we have to dispatch them is a pellet rifle.
