INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I got my first chic's tonite, I got a variety, 1 buff Orrington, i egger, a RIR, a barred rock, a cinnamon chic(looks just like the RIR, and a silver laced wyandont., I'm so nervous, why are they huddling in the corner? and they don't seem interested in eating or drinking...do I have to show them? They came from the Big R in Crawfordsville, and were eating there. Maybe there just getting used to a new home?
Sorry I missed this posting. They are all huddling as they are cold. Do you have a thermometer in there? They need temps around 95 degrees. Try lowering the lamp. Also dunk their beaks into the water, so they know it is there. They will find the food eventually. Their lack of interest in food and water might be them just too cold.

Does anyone out there have a favorite automatic chicken door they like or dislike?Looking into getting one as a backup in case not home until like and I want my girls safe:)
I remember seeing some posts about those on our Indiana BYCers Thread . . . go to Search This Thread and enter: automatic door opener

Mother- I just read your posting about the turkey vultures. I am going to assume there is probably a rather large carcass somewhere near by. If it is big enough there will be huge flocks. Could there be a field nearby they have recently tilled, might have unearthed an abundance of critters that may have died in there.

My first try at incubating eggs and I had 18 out of 20 hatch. I lost 1 at 2 days old, it was a tiny chick. 1 never pipped and 1 was infertile and I missed it some how, so I have to say, 17 chicks is a pretty good hatch for my first try. My rainbow hatch.

About the Vultures~ I think vickichicki is correct! Another Mystery Solved!
I Google Image-searched Turkey Vulture and I feel certain that's what they are because the first few times I saw them, I thought they had a horizontal wide stripe across the wingspans. This evening I decided that it just looked they had horizontal stripes because of the way the sun hit their wings. When I saw the Google image, I realized they have a gradation of wing color, which combined with sun rays make it look like a wide stripe. In my past posts, at first I thought they were hawks migrating, then someone mentioned vultures, but since the flock looked black, I had just Googled Black Hawk and Black Vulture. Here's some interesting info: The Turkey Vulture is gregarious and roosts in large community groups, breaking away to forage independently during the day. Several hundred vultures may roost communally in groups which sometimes even include Black Vultures.
Vicki~ as far as a recently plowed field that would attract them, I don't know of any, but there must be something going on since I've seen these large flocks lately.

danand~ Definitely not Sandhills Cranes, but occasionally I see a bird fly by (there's a small lake nearby) that I assume is an egret, but it could be a crane now that you mentioned them.
