I called the Vigo County Building Inspectors Office today and asked questions inquiring about having pet chickens. I was sent to the area planning office. Talked to one of the men there and he looked up my address and said we could have them. He said the limit is 6. When I told him we were doing this as a HOMESCHOOL project he said he didn't see a problem with us having 6-10 chickens.

Considering we have 3 properties, looks like we can keep all 24 of our chicks.

Thank you to everyone who encouraged me to fight. I made myself sick worrying about having to give away my girls. I woke up this morning in fight mode and got the job done.

THANK YOU ALL FOR BEING SO AWESOME!!!!

For Stressedmom,
While I agree you should stand up for yourself there is the issue of making an enemy of your neighbor. It is always best to try and work with people. Even if it is or should be allowed it is important to respect the people living near you. Best case scenario is to get the neighbor on board with the chickens. This could escalate past the chickens quickly if you don't. Not to mention the head aches of constant calls this person might make to authorities about the care of your animals. Bottom line, if you live in a subdivision of any type you are too close to those around you to make enemies.
Go with the talk over the kitchen table approach first. If that doesn't work then you will have to decide how far you are willing to take it. The other alternative is to move somewhere that it won't be an issue.

I absolutely agree with you. However, we have done nothing to this woman and she has called the county inspector on us 12 times in the past 6 years. She calls the inspector on everyone in the neighborhood. For instance, I have a dresser on my front porch. A friend gave it to me to use as a planter. The day I got it she called and complained that I have furniture on my porch. I didn't even get a chance to get it moved. She is just a lonely hag of a woman that has nothing better to do than walk around the neighborhood and find things to report.

I have a neighbor like this. It was pure hell until we installed a 15,000 privacy fence to enclose our entire property and shield the view of his 32 security cameras. He called the cops on us once for asking him to let us know when he'd be on OUR property! Wound up having to have a 2,000 survey to appease his mind. Before that the wife threatened to sue us for 25,000 for trimming weeds on what they thought was the property line...our survey later proved it was our property and also they had built their fence on our property. To be the bigger people(and becasue its only 3 feet) we let them keep it there. He supposedly is bi-polar and paranoid. My Grandma is bi-polar and I am very familiar with the disease, but this is different with him. He used to walk his property with guns on his belt to try and intimidate us until the courts ordered he relinquish them. He has been comitted several times. The thing is -it is mostly his wife that makes him behave this way. My husband used to be friends with him, but the wife is a big instigator...My husband has witnessed her hit him before. She does not like white people and forbid him to be friends with us. They are the only black family in our neighborhood, not that it matters...I really feel sorry for him. We get along with him now, and he was going to divorce her but found out he couldn't(financially) so he lives in the garage :/ We are allowed to have chickens as long as the coop is 100 ft away from our house, which it is...But when we were fighting he went to the town meeting to complain about them...even though his chidren come over to see the baby chicks and we give them eggs all the time. Everyone around here has chickens...The building com. offered to come measure the distance from houses to coop, but he then said he didnt care about the chickens and he didn't want to complain. The wife got ANGRY and stormed out of the town hall. Now we are not in conflict with them, they are in conflict with the neighbor on the other side. These kind of people are called "NFH" or Neighbors From Hell.(you should order the book!) They thrive on conflicts and the moment you show them it is affecting you, they get a new wind to push you harder. The stories I have would make your stomach turn...I wound up with bad anxiety after dealing with them for a year.they have a small property but bought two ATV's and would ride them up and down the property line and rev the engines anytime we came outside last year...dawn to dusk. So many things they did to break away at us...luckily the fence & then winter allowed things to calm down and now it is peaceful...I hope it stays that way!! One thing I did not hear mentioned is asing for a variance. You could petition the town to give you a variance to have the chickens. Your building comm. should have more information for you..I would pick up a code book from your town so you are familiar with all of the laws/ordinances becasue it sounds like your neighbor might be a NFH.

Good luck!
