Assuming you want hatchery chicks....I got my first chicks from Matthy's Farm Market on the west side. They get their chicks from the same hatchery as TSC and Rural King (Townline Hatchery).

The reason I liked getting them from Matthy's instead of RK or TSC is that you order what you want AHEAD OF TIME and they call you the day they come in and you take them right from the ship box. They don't go into big tubs and have people walking in there bringing in all kinds of possible diseases, etc. and they don't sit there in the store in tubs that are too crowded. You get them within a day of hatch.

Now if you don't want Hatchery Chicks (like if you want heritage birds, rare breeds, etc.) I could give you some other ideas.

Our TSC in Seymour gets their chicks from Privett Hatchery (located in Texas I believe). I think it is so weird that even in the same state, the stores get the chicks from different hatcheries. I wonder if it is each store manager's decision to make. Knowing which hatchery they come from really helps when trying to identify "Assorted Bantams" because all hatcheries have different breeds they offer.

stressdmom~ I have read that the idiom, "Mad as a Wet Hen" is actually not true about chickens. Although my chickens often look like wet rats too, they do go out and peck around as usual in the rain unless it's a heavy rain or storm. Even then, they don't go in the coop; they find a semi-covered place under the deck or under a bush. When they are wet, they look like they are mad, but since their feathers are mostly water-repellent, I don't think they are suffering. Of course with chicks, you have to make sure they don't float away. We used to put them in the coop during a heavy rain and when they got older, we'd put them in, but leave the door open a little. When it became obvious that they could handle storms, we just left the door open as usual and let them decide.
