INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

I finally got all my chicks together in one box that is big enough for them all there is 29 all together . I can not want to get them out side.
I can have my house back they are following me around and getting out of the box's but I think I have that all fixed now.
I just hope the youngest ones are ok and will make it all night.

how old are the youngest? once they have their feathers in they should be ok. I hate putting them out in the grow out pen, I am out there every hour worrying.
Couldn't help myself any longer, I turneres the bator back on early today and have set 15 eggs. My husband is going to kill me but I want to check for fertility with my silkie/ameraucana mixes. The silkie and showgirl eggs in there are just a bonus this hatch. Fingers crosses for a few to hatch this time, I had to throw all the others out lastime.

Ok, picture time! Lol

I had more Orps hatch today. Got buffs/lemon cuckoo, lavenders, and another brown cuckoo/barred. There is either another brown or a black Orp still drying out in the bator. I also picked up 4 naked neck pullets today from Orschelns.
The 3 week old Orps
The barred/cuckoo chicks
Lemon cuckoo?
Buff
Birchen Marans roo. Starting to gettose pretty hackle feathers!
Pan fry chick (possible EE. Thought it was a pullet, but the comb is starting to become more red)
Beautiful birds brad! I really think those are lemon cuckoo.
Hatched some babies today ladies. Seems all I ever get is Rhode island reds though! Or they appear to be Rhodes lol
Awesome news! we love to drool on pictures

I don't believe in with holding food for mouse protection, I know for certain my cats whom have food available 24/7/365 some would catch mice some would not and if for some reason we ran out of feed at 7pm and the store was closed until the next morning the cat that wouldn't mouse before still wouldn't mouse even if hungry. So sorry I don't think your opinon holds water...

So you are one of two who say chickens will kill a mouse. I did not know that. I know they eat bugs, but didn't know about mammals. Did not see the owl last night, and we made a lot of progress on the run. The human door is now built, and the wiring is secure all around. Working on the roof part now, next is the hanging wagon wheel and some branches for them to relax on.
Every chick I've ever gotten from TSC has died. Only has ever made it to an adult, and it is some kind of mix between a silkie and maybe a califorian white?? I don't buy from them any more.
We must be lucky then. Only one of ours from TSC died, and they gave us a replacement free. So our 8 are now thriving, 8 weeks old.

This bird is an Easter-egger.

Very pretty, too!

This is the standard for Araucanas, not Ameraucanas. Two VERY different breeds.
Yeah, it's terrible what people do sometimes.

My mom and I went to a swap meet and saw a guy with a cage full of barred Rock cockerels--spurs starting, sickle tail feathers, mighty combs--and the cage was labelled 'pullets'. Ugh.

If you're wondering (but mostly because I like to show off my birds

), the only straight run girl I've gotten is my Easter-egger, Merlin:

Pipd, Merlin is a very good looking bird.

My DW named one of our chickens Merlin.

Went to swap meet today! Had a blast. I sold just about all the chickens I took except 4 little white chicks. BUT I left home with cages full and came back home with cages full! LOL I didnt even have to spend any of my own money. Here is some pics of new chickens.

OEG Bantam hen

Lemon Blue OEG Dont think he is to standard tho. It should have more yellow. ROO

Silver Spangled Hamburg HEN

2 White Frizzle Roos. One is in nest box.. Feathers in poor shape Got these for free

Black Sizzle Roo. Feathers in bad shape as well. Got him for free as well with the 2 frizzles.

Pekin Duck Drake along with Mallard Drake.

Better pic of Mallard Drake. I also got a Mallard hen but forgot to get pic of her. The small duck is Pekin as well I got today.
So the birds with the bad feathers will look better as time goes by? I think they will, and the reason they look so badly now is from recent neglect.

Also love your ducks.

Oh my, best climbers out there! But no worries, your chickens will make the mice disappear in one gulp

the squirrels will likely realize he doesn't want to challenge an angry hen either.

I vote PULLET!

No water or food in the coop, and feed outside in the run, same with water. After they roost, I pick up all remaining feed. But mine are not confined at night, they can go into the run freely. Is chain link top bottom sides ect, and buried chain link in the ground every inch woven together

ya I am way overboard but we have most of the common predators here. And a few of the human type too. I like to make things a fortress. winter I used a heated dish, plan to get some more this coming year. I am planning to put flags up to keep wild birds out too, but we have a lot of cardinals!
All y'all here are enablers, dang you! We were only going to get 3-4 and now we have 8. Wow. When is the meeting? The chicaholic meeting? Every Tuesday at 7, right? I'll be there, but only to watch you 'holics and laugh.

So, the food and water is outside. Hanging so the mice don't get in it? I think we did a pretty good job of making ours predator proof also, burying the wire 2 feet out from the run to stop the digging animals. And no bird will get thru the run, with its' 2x4 wire. Small things yes, but not any large ones. I've heard here that a big possum can get thru the 2x4 tho, and also have read on this forum that possums have been found roosting with the chickens!

I've got a couple questions that are going to seem dumb to more experienced BYC!

1. All chicken breeds can mate with eachother, so if my Standard Roo mates with one of my Banty Hens, what happens? I am assuming the egg will still come out small, for a bantam sized chick. Will the standard/bantam chick have enough room in the egg to develope properly? Will it come out as a bantam sized, or will it be more of a medium sized chicken?

2. I know with interbreeding dogs (like shipoos and such) that people look down on mutt dogs. Do people look down on mutt chickens? Is it bad to have mutts?

I'm just curious. I have a mixed flock, so there's a high probability that if I wanted to hatch eggs, some would be mutts.

I think mutt chickens are the best. They seem to be more healthier as well. Some standard chickens carry certain traits that came be prone to such dieseass but if you mix them togehter then that they are not as prone to those diseases. Do you know what I mean? I have seen my large fowl mate with my silkies. Their eggs still come out small. When I want a standard chik then I do seperate them from the rest of the flock in a breeder pen. After they have mated in the breeder pen I dont keep the first egg. The rest I do start keeping for incubating or let hen sit on them. If this confuses you in any way please feel free to ask and I can explain more.

Yes the frizzles and sizzle feathers will look better. The guy told me that they moulted and then the chickens started picking on them and his roos started fighting with them and causing their feathers not to grow back right. I cant wait to see them feather out they will be some hansom roos.
