All y'all here are enablers, dang you! We were only going to get 3-4 and now we have 8. Wow. When is the meeting? The chicaholic meeting? Every Tuesday at 7, right? I'll be there, but only to watch you 'holics and laugh.

So, the food and water is outside. Hanging so the mice don't get in it? I think we did a pretty good job of making ours predator proof also, burying the wire 2 feet out from the run to stop the digging animals. And no bird will get thru the run, with its' 2x4 wire. Small things yes, but not any large ones. I've heard here that a big possum can get thru the 2x4 tho, and also have read on this forum that possums have been found roosting with the chickens!

You dont have to hang it. But it does have pluses. I have a big trough feeder outside in run so i can hang mine. I do have a 5 gallon water bucket with nipples hanging tho. But also have a large pan down on ground for ducks to drink. Here soon I will have to get the little pools out for the ducks.

I think mutt chickens are the best. They seem to be more healthier as well. Some standard chickens carry certain traits that came be prone to such dieseass but if you mix them togehter then that they are not as prone to those diseases. Do you know what I mean? I have seen my large fowl mate with my silkies. Their eggs still come out small. When I want a standard chik then I do seperate them from the rest of the flock in a breeder pen. After they have mated in the breeder pen I dont keep the first egg. The rest I do start keeping for incubating or let hen sit on them. If this confuses you in any way please feel free to ask and I can explain more.

Thanks! I was worried if I had mutt chickens, one day some chicken buff was going to see in my coop and freak out! Have you ever hatched an egg from a banty/standard cross? I don't have any banty roos yet, but I may still incubate the banty eggs if it won't cause the chick inside to have a defect.

i think everyone has some mutts. I have not yet tried to incubate a banty/standard egg yet.

I always have food and water in the coop. I did have a few mice in the coop this past winter but between the chickens and myself we controlled the numbers. I have a 20# or 30# feeder in the coop that will last several weeks if they can free range. I uded a 3gal waterer laster year but since ducks are gone I'll be using bowls this year. In summer they get water with ice packs in the coop and water outside as well. Scratch grain scattered outside mainly unkess I need bedding stirred up in ciip. Then I scatter it inside so I dont have to rake lol.

OK I am gonna ask what I think maybe a silly question. At the end of march, I had a Cochin bantam go broody on me. So I thought it may be wise to let her sit. She did an amazing job by the way and hatched out two clutches of beautiful chicks.

However, I have now just introduced her back to my flock. (She was in a cage in the coop with them the whole time) she previously was the matriarch of the whole brigade and now she is getting thrown around a little by my other three hens.

I thought now would be a good time to bring her back in as I have already disturbed the pecking order (I have removed a few hens and roosters this week and have added about 20 10+ week olds to the mix). Am I correct in thinking this?

Also, before I put her in the cage she was very wild. But after the fact she will walk right up to me and hide between my legs to get away from the other hens. She will walk right into my hand from the perch and clucks happily. I only fed her and occasionally pet her in the cage during all this time. I talked to her too. Did I turn her into a big baby? Lol. And will she be OK?

I've been busy the last day or so so I haven't gotten to respond to messages or posts yet. I will get there. To who asked about where I got my silkies, I got them from a farm in marion. She isn't selling anymore right now that I know of. I just happened to catch her at a time she had a pair to sell. I traded her my cochin becuase her LF rooster is getting older and she wanted to have another. Anyway here they are. The boy isn't SQ but he will breed nicely. (he has 4 toes on one of his feet instead of five. They look identical. I named them Ashes and Booker. They are molting so they look a little scraggly.This is the pullet.... I couldn't get a picture of both without them blending together. lol

I just got a pair of Aruacana chicks! I am so excited to get some blue or green eggs
