Wow, this is a busy place. Don't check in for a day or 2 you get way behind! I use my phone and it doesn't always cooperate. Anyways.... this morning our dogs decided to get the chickens. Idk why? They have never tried before. So I lost 3 buff orp hens. And the hen turkey that took me months of searching to find. I have only had her about a month.

it sucks loosing a bird to anything. But its the worst when its bc of one of your other babies. I'm so heart broken! I just needed to whine and knew you all would understand. Thank you for listening.

I am so sorry you lost your chickens today. Just breaks my heart.

I have one chick inside tonight. The little EE the big girls pecked. Now the little girls are picking on her. Shes bleeding on both sides of her tail feathers. I opted not to use the blue stuff even though I bought it, I wanted to make sure she was healing ok. How long can I keep her separated from the flock before there is a problem re introducing her?

Then I cut my finger tonight working on the coop. **** those new blades. A couple of butterfly bandages and a full bandage over those. Maybe I can get out of getting stitches. So now I need to find a rubber glove to cover my hand to take care of the injured chicken. I need a beer, lol, and I don't even drink!

I may have a hen starting to go broody hooray! The last few days she has been puffing up when she's in the nest. How can I encourage her? I really want to have one hatch for me.

Well, from my experience, if you do everything in your power to stop them from brooding, they'll set into it for a month or more. But seriously, just leave her be and she'll go into broody mode on her own when she's ready. Mine usually have a couple days of the maybe-I-will-maybe-I-won't broody attitude before BAM! I'm getting this look from the nests:

Oh, poor Deb ... just make sure it stops the bleeding. Don't wait too long to get stitches. You don't want to wake up in the middle of the night with blood smeared everywhere. Sorry, it's the nurse in me I would do the same though. Hate going to the dr. or hospital. Lots of pressure

Its been about an hour since I cut it, it has stopped bleeding. I held my hand above my heart for a good 25 min lol. Fairly certain I would need a stitch or 3. Its across the hole pad of my finger, deepest at the point of entry, almost the side of my finger, to about the middle of my finger, they its just a cut to the other end of the finger. But it has stopped bleeding. I'll check it before I go to bed to make certain it hasn't started back up again. So I had the kids bring the chickens in for the night, and that's when we noticed the little one was bleeding too. They kids were too funny, they made me sit and watch them bring each girl in for the night, with my hand in the air above my head. 2 of my kids haven't even played with the birds in several weeks and they were nervous about picking them up. Hope hubby will be done with these crazy hours this week or my coop may never get done! ugh

Yea I hate going to the dr/hospital too. And I much appreciate the advice Thanks!

DH has made me a deal. I can get Swedish Flower Hens if he can get Black Minorca's. Does anyone know a place I can buy them locally, or are they something I am going to have to special order through a breeder?

in the southern half of the state we have Kentucky Jokes, like some people tell jokes about Blondes or Pollocks, we have Kentucky jokes. like there where two farmers whom had an on going feud one on either side of the river, one night they where shouting insults at each other and the Hoosier yelled a challenge and the Kentuckian said he would take him up on it but he would have to cross the river had no boat and no bridge for several miles, and he couldn't swim. So the Hoosier said he'd turn on a flashlight and allow the Kentuckian to cross on the light beam the Kentuckian said he wasn't dumb enough to fall for that, half way over he said he knew the Hoosier would turn off the flash light....

KY jokes lol:

A KY farmer and an IN farmer were having a problem with foxes eating their chickens.
They kept accusing each others foxes of eating their chickens. One day, the Hoosier farmer called the KY farmer and told him he had proof that it had been the KY foxes all along eating his Hoosier chickens.
The KY farmer asked for proof. The Hoosier farmer said that "the stupid KY fox had chewed off 3 of his legs off and he was still caught in the trap."

LOL! Good one. I love that we are all Hoosiers... but even some that live near us are so "kentuckyish" they would make a fuss.

Behavior question: Just in the past few days, my chickens have been doing this little thing where they run full speed at each other, just before they collide they stretch up as tall as they can (reminds me of ballerinas on point), and they just hold that pose and lightly flutter their wings.

Is this normal? Why are they doing it? ALL of my chickens are doing it, not just a few.

It is quite entertaining!!!

Makes for great chicken TV (which is what we tell the kids we are watching when we settle in for an hour of admiring the chickens free ranging).
