INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Frankfort, 10 or so miles. Now I can do that! Give me a call 765-894-1674.

Hubby doesn't care for 5:30 AM wake up call, huh?

John

Shawna, thank you for the SLW roo, GLW roo, and GLW hen. That gets rid of half of your roosters. Now your husband will only be half-irritated with you. They arrived at their new home in good spirits. The SLW ate feed from my hand. The GLW's are about the size of the Orpingtons and seem to be settling in fine with no bickering. The SLW, being 1/2 larger will likely soon be king of the roost. Thanks again.

To everyone else, Shawna is a kind-hearted soul who bought the GLW's because they were the last in the bin and were being picked on by the other varieties. She is a very sweet young woman.

He is too precious, What a proud little guy! I love his adorable crow! He will sound wonderful when he is mature, I love roosters crowing.

Quote: Haha, sugar sammiches I toasted mine too I loved them! Not worried, just want my food supply natural, and medicine free. My Mom alone takes 12 different medications for cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, ugh. Food raised at home has her doctor asking whats changed! The meat from my hog is almost fat free due to raising on pasture. Same with my meat birds. Fat tastes good

, but is not so healthy in heart patients. Dad had a double bypass, so I monitor their meals carefully, and provide the healthiest food I can. We all try to do whats best in our different situations.

So, I had to run into Big R over lunch to pick up some more food for the chicks. They get their chicks in every Friday so I took a gander. One of the signs said Cochins and I about flipped because they had originally told me they weren't getting anymore in. I looked in the tub and they did not look a think like Cochins. Their little legs were as bare as can be. I couldn't see a single piece of fluff anywhere. Do you think they are mis-marked or is it possible to get Cochin chicks without any leg fluff? I've never seen one without, but I'm new to this wholld chicken game. Oh, they were all bright yellow as well.

Cochins are always feather-legged. Those chicks are mislabeled.

I think all your babies are adorable, but I'm really loving Hika Ma a lot.  Not sure where you got all their names, but really cute!  Do you say his name like my favorite veggie, the Jicama?

I named these babies all in Maori, the native language of New Zealand. :) I am certainly not an expert in this language, but from what I'm reading, Hika Ma should be pronounced very similarly to Jicama, but the last syllable is 'may', not 'mah'. ;) I call him Ma or Ma-Ma for short, and without knowing how that last syllable is pronounced, that can look like an interesting name for a little boy.

Technically, we are living in a current Ice Age. In an interglacial period, so it is plausible that a glacial period will happen sometime in the future. Maybe not in our lifetimes, but 1,000 years down the road? Maybe.

Global warming is misleading. It will increase the overall temperature, melting the ice caps, which will then put an influx of cold water into the oceans, effectively cooling many places on Earth. The rise in sea levels will disrupt, even destroy many natural habitats. Flooding will occur due to increase rainfall in some areas, while others experience drought. Storms will become more violent, weather in general will be more extreme. We're already experiencing some of the worst storms in history. I'm not saying it's all bad, or that everyone is going to die, but its definately not going to be sunshine and rainbows the whole way.

Sorry about the lecture. I'm sort of a science geek.
My thoughts on all the weather stuff/global warming/cooling is, there is not much humans can do about it at this phase of our evolution/science. I don't want any government trying to dictate how we live to try to stop weather patterns. There may be some evidence that humans have done some global change, but it's not by any means locked up at this point IMO. Life has evolved wonderfully to compensate for change on this planet for 100s of millions of years, and will continue to do so. 98% of all species on this planet are already extinct. You make some good points about rising water tables.
So cute! Love them all and I'm loving your stories too! Keep em coming!

My English Bulldog lays just like that and my brother's Staffordshire does as well. Neither of them have anything going on with their stomachs so I doubt that's what's causing it, but I could be wrong.

So sorry! She was a Light Brahma right? My Brahma is my sweetest of all of my chicks so far. Sorry you had to lose her.

Ok, what kind of chick is this, because I really must have one!

If someone had played that for me with just sound I would never have guessed rooster. Also, he's stinking cute!!! Are you planning on keeping him?
Thanks, he is kinda cute, esp when he snuggles up to his SLW pullet. He can stay as long as he's not too loud.

Quote: Aww, i bet, EE are so hard to tell.

Well, then you haven't lost all your marbles....I drove all the way to Connecticut last fall for a pair of free Barnevelder...ROOSTERS! They are beautiful. Actually, I have soome friends in MA i hadn't seen in 10 years, so i had a nice visit with them before picking up the roos. Other wise, those birds would've cost me about $400. WARNING! I DO NOT recommend spending 19 hours in a car with two chickens!!! Don't Stink and Drive!!!
I dont feel so bad driving 30 miles for a silkie roo now.

only thing i'm worried about is when my overprotective silkie rooster is going to attempt to flog me next.

Mine too, if i pick up any bird he is after me. he gets a toe bump in the chest.

lol. You said it - Back to Chickens! I'm not sure about early attempts predicting how the roo will crow later, but I am right there with you laughing at the pathetic attempts my young boys are doing. They get all puffed up, stretch out their necks.....and 'Urrrrk' is about all that comes out. But I will say my Fayoumi sounded like that when he started, and the crows are full throated now. My guys seem to crow around 6-6:30 in the morning, and again mid afternoon. So far it hasn't been the all day crow-a-thon that everyone has been warning me about.
Get some video, and post it up please! Love the funny first attempts.
It means you should rehome him to me. My neighbors like to hear the 5:30 AM crowing. I'll go to Kroger and buy you 2 chickens for your one SLW roo.

John
Well, he's not crowing that early yet. I'll keep you in mind. Love your comments and stories!
Ha, Ha! he actually doesn't sound that bad, I've heard a lot more pathetic attempts. At least he's got rhythm! The first time I ever heard a new crower, I jumped out of bed and ran outside to do battle, I thought some predator was out there hurting him! Yep, he'll only do it 8 times in the morning, and then no more...quiet allllll day! heh heh heh....
Yeah................my dude's got rythym. Kinda like that old AC/DC song,"The Girl's Got Rhythm".

Merlin will stop after 10x or so in the morning, thanx for the confirmation lol.

Meet Virginia! We picked this little lady up driving home from a great vaca in West Virginia as a sweet little souvenir. She was marked as an Araucana which clearly shes not, she has a tail! Lol! I wasn't able to chose her they had the chicks in a weird cage almost like a bread loaf carrier at the store but closed all the chicks were very skittish clearly not handled often. They scooped her up and stuck her in a box and taped it shut and $3.60 later we have sweet little Virginia hahaha. I know a lot of hatcheries sell Araucana, Ameraucanas, EE all the same because they carry the blue egg gene. I have an EE hen but shes not this dark and I know they come in a ton of colors.

Soooo what do you all think Miss West Virginia Holler is?? I'm hoping for the blue/green/olive egg gene. :)
You probably wont know till she lays! but what a cutie pie

The bantams I bought are 6 weeks old today. We are guessing we have 4 roos and hopefully 4 hens.

At least one of the D'uccles is a boy looks like both of the tentative golden seabrights are boys and one of the possible easter eggers.

They are doing very well drinking out of the rabbit bottle so I am thinking I will buy another and put the spouts on 2 liter bottles to make sure they get enough water each day.

The whole fencing class was slacking off to watch them walking around in the playpen. great distractions

Try these. http://www.ebay.com/itm/10-Pack-Wat...082?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item232afdb7c2

The work great! Drill some holes in the bottom of a bucket or the cap of a 2-liter bottle screw it in (don't crush the gasket) and you're in business. There are examples all over youtube.com

I bought 25 and have made up 4 5-gallon bucket waterers.

Nuts, the nipples on the bottom are hard to see with the red barn as a background, but you get the idea.

There are 8 of them in the dog crate, its becoming a tight fit and they are having entirely too much fun kicking poo out the front of the cage. I have been looking a the coop pictures on this site for three months or more planning how I want to build it. honestly they are no worse than the litter box, but its harder to clean when they wont cooperate.
Ha. 'having entirely too much fun kicking poo out the front of the cage.' You better stop looking at the pictures and get that build done! They grow so fast.
I feel deprived. I never got cinnamon on my sugar sandwiches. I'm going over to Mom's house and kick her in the shin. She's 87. Too feeble to retaliate.

John
'Too feeble to retaliate.' Let me know if you do this to her. I'll help her retaliate! Now, go make yourself a nice butter/sugar sandwich and pat yourself on the back for being a nice son. Cut her grass while your at it.

The DH got home today! Been gone for 6 weeks for work to Brazil. Showed him all the chickens and he was amazed at how big they are. He kept asking if I'd bought the big ones and I kept having to tell him they'd grown up since he left!!
400
. This is what he brought me!!
