INDIANA BYC'ers HERE!

Kritter~ Good to see you back again!

Quote: Welcome amwchickin!

I have a Barred Rock and I'd be crying if something happened to her. Sorry to hear about that accident.

My husband has said he's heard the hens purring while roosting on the deck. The only sound I've heard them make that sounds like a purr that is a "predator alert" sound, which obviously isn't when they are in a relaxed state. I've figured out what most of their sounds mean, but I haven't heard the purring one.

Thank you!!!!!

Welcome to all the new people.

Hello all you doomsday prophets :p

I've been lurking and I like the get together idea :)

I'm currently hunting Bigfoot he showed up on my doorstep dressed as a raccoon and tried to haul off my loaded 80 gal garbage can.

All is well in chickens though I lost a goat Kidd to unknown infection dispite 5 vet trips

I started my new chicken palace this weekend ill post some pics Monday night

So I bought several chicks this year, always making to have two the same coloration because I heard if a chicken is the only kind like itself, it will get picked on. Well, they may have looked alike as chicks, but they sure grew up weird! This is what "Day and Night" looked like as a chick. The chick to the extreme left is "Night" and to the right is "Day" This is "Day" in a better light. And this is "Night" in better light. That is so adorable! Sounds like you are going to have tons of chicks! I am sooo jealous!
this is just getting worse and worse! I now have 3 guineas sitting on the same nest. I wish the little wierdos would convence my buffs to set. Lol I honestly don't even no what I am going to do? If anything. Mybe I shoukd leave all. And see what happens? What do you guys think?

Sorry Shawnascott, I don't no how I quoted you on my last post? Of course my comment wasn't directed at your pics. But I do love seeing them I wish I could get pics to upload on here. My buff chicks are starting to do big eagle and they love to play king of the world on top of the waterer. There is 1 that likes to roost on it and the rest try to pluck him off it so they can have a turn but he wont share lol

So sorry to hear about the lil goat, that's a rough one to go thru.
Looking forward to the pics!

Do you think he scowls when he has missed a few days on here and has to read through 200 posts

Ha, yes. I bet it's hard even for him to keep up with this thread.
Too Fast, you old horsethief,

Don't you read the internet? They call it "Climate Change" now so they don't have to answer embarrassing questions when it is found to be getting cooler some years.

"Climate Change" is what we old fossils used to refer to as "Weather".

Somewhere along the line, I got the impression that you are guy and of mature years. I hope so, otherwise the tenor of this posting would be all wrong.

I was raised in the South and taught to be respectful of ladies. If I transgress, Mom will come after me with the dreaded flyswatter.

You better not dis the mamma.

My mother had a wooden paddle, with holes drilled into it so it would swing faster. Sometimes I still feel the sting, decades later.

Now come on pipd, we have a favorite here as well, our smallest one. I don't do any emoticons usually bc I'm lazy. We love seeing the love for the chickens, especially chicks!
Oooooh! I think we have a broody girl on our hands. One of our black australorps was hanging out in a nest box first thing this morning. When we got home from church & went in the barn after lunch she was still in the same box. Hmmm, we thought. So my daughter checked & there were 3 eggs under her. Just to see what would happen, she collected the other 7 that were laid today & put them in with the hen, who promptly tucked them under her. She has been spread out over the 10 eggs the rest of the day & was still there when we closed up the barn around 9:30pm. A number of other girls wanted to use that box, but she growled at them & wouldn't move. Can't wait to see if she's still there in the morning!
''growled at them & wouldn't move.'' Yes I'd say she's-a-broodin'. Any more eggs today?

My name is Melissa and I live in southern Indiana. I have seven beautiful six week old Wyandottes, three SLW and four GLW. So far, it looks like six are pullets and one is a roo.

Looking forward to learning more about raising these cute chicks. :)

herebynightfall~ Welcome to the Indiana Thread! We have many members who are happy to help. And just a note about Too Fast's mention of freezer camp and dumplings-- we have members (like myself) who have chickens just for pets while others have them for healthful farm to table food.
So true. Some of us would never think of our birds as possible food, but if they are raising them for dumplings, those birds don't get names. Guess what? Our flock of 8 all have names, so I really don't know what I'll do if the roos start causing too much ruckus. That's a hard, personal decision.
Wow, I still can't believe how busy this thread is! It's like it has exploded into a million conversations. I read through them all, but then can't remember who to reply to

just went to a graduation party and scored the HOG CARCASS for the dog.... she will be busy for a long time! I just hope she doesn't eat too fast and chuck it back up. She growled as the guys carried it to her pen, then realized the aroma! Wonder if chickens like pork? Probably.
On another note... the farmer that owns the fields around us planted today. I told him I would keep the chickens fenced for a couple weeks until the sprouts are tall enough they won't clear out a patch. The chickens will hate me... I feel an overthrow coming.
I bet your dog is in heaven with all that meat. Quote:

No kidding, I cant figure where to put my garden, I will probably just shelf the idea til next year. They are like a locust plague! I had planted some grass seed, well, they found the seedlings sprouting

so much for covering THAT bare patch!

We usually have about a 1000 sq ft garden, but the coop/run takes up about 2/3 of that area. It was getting too shady there anyway, but I think the vege garden is mostly on hold this year.
